00:04 The conch fish in Southeast Asia is one of the rarest reptiles in the world.
00:11 Because people killed a lot of them in the past,
00:13 conch fish was once recognized as extinct in the wild in the early 1990s.
00:18 The International Conservation Alliance therefore classified conch fish as an extremely endangered species.
00:23 Fortunately, in a 2000-year-old field investigation,
00:26 the conch fish was found to be in the Doukou Mountains of Jianpu Village.
00:31 However, due to the small number of conch fish,
00:33 the survival of wild conch fish is still very dangerous.
00:36 In order to protect conch fish from extinction,
00:39 the International Animal Welfare Organization launched the "Conservation of Conch Fish" project in Jianpu Village.
00:44 In the secret conch fish pond,
00:48 use a rope to hold the conch fish,
00:50 then hold the body of the conch fish,
00:52 then take the black tape and stick the mouth of the conch fish.
00:55 They are not killing the fish.
00:57 These are all necessary methods before releasing the fish.
01:00 When the conch fish was rediscovered for the 25th anniversary,
01:03 the International Animal Welfare Organization released 50 conch fish one after another.
01:06 25 years ago now,
01:08 Fauna and Flora rediscovered a population of Siamese crocodiles in Cambodia.
01:13 The species was thought to be extinct in the wild up until that point.
01:17 And so following that discovery,
01:19 we have been working with the government and with local communities
01:22 to help bring the species back from the brink of extinction.
01:26 Not only releasing the fish,
01:28 but also to continue the species of conch fish,
01:30 the organization has also raised more than 200 pure conch fish for breeding.
01:35 The zookeepers feed them with chicken every day.
01:38 Once they find that there are conch eggs,
01:43 they will transfer the eggs to incubators and carefully raise the conch fish.
01:46 When the conditions are met,
01:48 the young conch fish will be released to the remote Doukou Mountain Conch Protection Area.
01:52 We are releasing them in very remote sites in the Cardamom Mountains,
01:56 the jungle area where the species can be safe.
01:59 And we are doing this because it is an important species for the ecosystem.
02:04 As a top predator, it contributes to maintaining the ecosystem health.
02:08 This project has successfully released at least 200 conch fish since 2011.
02:13 The organization also hopes to continue breeding and releasing conch fish in the next few decades
02:17 until the Doukou Mountain Range has enough conch fish.
