This week's edition of 'Two Wheels' is presented by Wayne Kershaw and Paul Johnston and comes from the Three Sisters Racetrack near Wigan. Paul and Wayne meet the roadracers of the future at the junior race meeting of the JRA. Wayne gets to meet up with Lou Dewland who is a member of M.A.G (Motorcycle Action Group) a group which is tackling Motorcyclists rights on the roads in Bristol. He is joined by Richardf Pyle of Bristol's town and transport department which is making the roads more accessible as well as safe parking for motorcyclists in the city.

00:29 On Two Wheels this week, we visit Three Sisters Racetrack near Wigan for a junior road race
00:34 meeting. And I think I may have discovered the most biker-friendly city in the country.
00:40 And there's a few more Two Wheeled Cop Cups.

00:51 Paul and I are in the heart of Lancashire, we're actually in Wigan, Three Sisters Racing
00:55 Circuit and we've come to watch these guys road racing. We've actually come to watch
00:59 the Tiddlers, well they're actually not that small because they're between 11 and 16 and
01:04 most of them are a lot taller than I am. And Paul's down in the pits as we speak, talking
01:09 to somebody who knows all about it.
01:11 Well here's the chairman of the Junior Racing Association, Adrian Pallett. Hi Adrian, thanks
01:17 for inviting us to your fantastic meeting here today. It's fairly new though, junior
01:21 racing isn't it?
01:22 It is fairly new, we actually started in about '91. It took two to three years to get through
01:27 the red tape obviously, all that sort of thing. And we actually staged our first meeting here
01:32 in '94, funnily enough on this very meeting, the end of July.
01:36 Right, so this is a birthday today then?
01:38 This is the GRA's birthday.
01:39 Fantastic, right. So how old are these riders?
01:42 They started 11 and they can go through to the 16th year.
01:46 Right, right. And very popular it is as well. So what kind of machines are they on? What
01:50 size of machines?
01:51 There's basically two groups. There's the Kojivas, that type of thing, the A-class shall
01:55 we call it. They're 80cc, or there is a more affordable Japanese class which is up to 100cc.
02:01 Right, right. They're fast enough though, I've seen some of these lads practising, they
02:04 don't have a whizz round, do they?
02:05 They're very quick. The only stipulation basically to keep the speed down is a 22mm carburettor.
02:11 Right.
02:12 But even so on a circuit like Aintree or Darling Moor they're pulling over 100mph.
02:16 Wow, that's impressive stuff. So typically how many do you get at a meeting? Is it really popular?
02:21 It varies, obviously we go throughout the country at various tracks, it varies meeting
02:25 to meeting. We have over 20 on the grid here. We've had 22 shall I say enter one year and
02:31 only allowed 20 on the grid.
02:32 Oh right.
02:33 Which has resulted in a bit of a scene at times.
02:35 I can imagine, yeah. A bit of a punch up in the friends perhaps.
02:37 That's right, yeah.
02:38 And does it run, it's ACU governed I presume?
02:41 It all has to come under the ordinary ACU jurisdiction, yeah, everything, yeah.
02:45 So it's run like a World Superbike Series but obviously slightly smaller.
02:48 It's run around throughout the country. There's two legs at each meeting.
02:52 Right.
02:53 The points from first to 15th place.
02:55 Right. And this really is, I mean, it's a breeding ground isn't it for superstars of the future.
03:00 So give us some famous names that we might know that started in junior racing.
03:03 Very much so. I would have to say first and foremost James Towsland.
03:07 Oh of course, yeah.
03:08 James Allison who are both now in the Classical Works Honda team. Guy Etherington who is doing
03:13 World Twins Racing. Steve Brogan, just down the road in Dave Deans Honda team.
03:18 David Johnson, another one. He was second last year in the ACU 600 Series.
03:25 Right.
03:26 But they're coming through all the while.
03:27 Seemingly every year it chucks one or two out that are really going to make it to the top.
03:31 Excellent, great stuff.

03:35 Trevor, tell me about this bike because it strikes me as it could be a 916 Ducati but it isn't.
03:56 What is it?
03:57 Well actually it's a Derby GPR 50 and it's been fully race kitted out and ready for the track.
04:04 It started life, I mean you could buy one of these and use it as a road going moped couldn't you originally?
04:08 Yeah you could, it's just a standard 16 year old moped.
04:13 But not anymore? Not anymore because you're racing it aren't you?
04:15 How old are you Trevor?
04:16 I'm 15.
04:17 15, so you couldn't go on the road yet anyway.
04:19 But nonetheless you're racing this bike but there's a nice little story that goes with this,
04:23 with the Derby factory isn't there?
04:25 Yeah there is.
04:26 Tell us about it mate.
04:27 Well it started off, we got the bike from the importers, we had sponsorship off them,
04:34 we're still being sponsored by them.
04:36 We wrote to Spain in Barcelona asking for sponsorship to buy a Derby.
04:42 Instead of sponsorship giving it to us, we actually got a letter inviting us to go to Spain to test ride a Grand Prix 125.
04:50 GP 125 in Spain for a couple of weeks, this is like me talking to a factory sponsored rider, I feel quite honoured really.
04:58 And your surname's Rock isn't it? And I believe you're a chip off the old block anyway with your father,
05:02 because he's a racer isn't he of the past?
05:04 Yeah he's done quite well, he's had a few bikes.
05:08 How many years of riding?
05:09 About 30.
05:10 30 years of riding?
05:11 Yeah.
05:12 And he reckons he's not even 32 himself he likes doesn't he?
05:15 So what's the score for yourself then? You've obviously got great opportunities with this trip to Spain.
05:20 What's your intentions for the future, what do you want to do?
05:22 Well I'd like to stay with Derby riding the 50's for about another year,
05:28 then I would like to get a Derby 125 from the track still and go on to them.
05:34 So road racing's your passion?
05:35 Yeah.
05:36 You can't be swayed away from road racing to perhaps motocross or something like that?
05:40 No this is a lot more fun.
05:42 You reckon dear? Do you know what, everyone we've spoken to has either come from motocross to road racing
05:47 or is in road racing and won't go to anything else.
05:49 Yeah we're going to change.
05:50 Stay as you are. Well we wish you the best of luck mate.
05:53 Now it's junior road racing this, 11 to 16 year olds as we've already heard,
05:57 and you think road racing, you think boys, I don't know why, but you do, you think lads,
06:01 but it's not all lads, Kay here, you're the only lady in this aren't you Kay?

06:06 And how old are you?
06:07 12.
06:08 12, right, and tell me about this machine that you're riding, what is it?
06:10 It's a Honda 80.
06:11 Honda 80, very fast I believe.
06:13 90 miles an hour.
06:14 90 miles an hour, that's plenty fast enough, fast enough for me that.
06:18 So how did you get into this, because you've not been doing it very long have you?
06:21 My dad, one day at home, twice.
06:23 Right, because I know your dad's Mike Hawthorne isn't he?
06:26 Which is a famous name from the past.
06:28 Right, so he got you into it did he?
06:30 Yep.
06:31 So when did you start?
06:32 March.
06:33 March, right, so you're fairly new.
06:34 What's the best thing about it, what's your favourite part of it?
06:36 Beating the lads.
06:37 Beating the lads?
06:38 Yeah, because you have beat a few haven't you, because I know it just passes those two little trophies down there.
06:43 Look at this, this was what, yesterday?
06:45 Yep.
06:46 Junior, third place, 80cc, third place, so I bet the lads were a bit sick after that weren't they?
06:51 Yeah.
06:52 I bet they were.
06:53 So what's your ambition then, where do you want to go in the future?
06:55 Daytona.
06:56 Daytona?
06:57 Well that's nothing like having ambitions like that, well I wish you all the very best and keep beating the boys eh?

07:03 Well I've come over to talk to these two young gentlemen and look at this rather nice Kajiva 80, because it is very well prepared and very pretty I must say.
07:14 Ollie and Pat here, now Pat, you're a somewhat established motorcyclist, been at the game for a while.
07:21 I have indeed, I'm a bit long in the tooth racing wise certainly, yeah.
07:24 But you did start at the same age as Ollie here?
07:26 I started at the same age as Oliver, 15, I was in the first 50cc race at Kyle Army in South Africa and I finished 13th out of 56 starters and I was on an Italian Maserati 50, beautiful little bike.
07:40 Maserati 50, I know there's many of you watching our programme probably didn't know that Maserati produce motorcycles.
07:46 That's correct.
07:47 You know, known for their famous exotic Italian cars.
07:50 Ollie now then, you're quite new to this, I know you've got a little Lawrence jacket on, this is to indicate to people who are, the marshals and everybody else that's out there that you're actually a newcomer to it.
07:59 But I've been watching you in the practice and you're no slouch, you're pretty swift on this machine.
08:03 So why do we wear the jacket for that purpose and how long do you wear the jacket for?
08:08 Well we wear the jacket to let people know and marshals know that I'm only a novice.
08:13 Yeah, yeah.
08:14 I haven't been riding that long and I've been wearing it for the past four race meetings.
08:20 Got you right.
08:21 And as soon as I do a certain amount of races then I get rid of it.
08:25 You can get rid of the jacket.
08:26 Yeah.
08:27 Great stuff.
08:28 You've got another two meetings to go.
08:29 Another two meetings.
08:30 Well I think it's a good idea because obviously people need to be aware.
08:31 Yes it is, it's essential.

09:50 Now you were telling me before you've come into this not through motocross like a lot of people have but through something else?

09:58 And what happened with the trails, why the change?
10:01 No, I didn't like riding it because it was too slow and I wasn't getting any adrenaline rush so I drove it.
10:08 Bit of a speed freak then, eh?

10:12 Did you do anything before road racing?
10:14 I did a race at motocross.
10:16 Motocross, right.
10:17 And I didn't like it so I just found out about the JRA and come into it.
10:22 Right, excellent.
10:23 So how long have you been doing it now?
10:24 This is my second season.
10:25 Second season?
10:26 Right, and what about you Jay?
10:27 You're fairly new, are you to it?
10:28 Yeah, this is my first season in it.
10:30 And is it what you thought it would be?
10:31 Are you enjoying it?
10:32 Yeah, it's brilliant.
10:33 Right, so what's your ambitions then?
10:35 Everyone's got big ambitions, what's yours then, Lee?
10:37 I need to sponsor first and then I want to go to the 125 Grand Prix.

10:43 Right, well that's plenty of ambition.
10:44 What about you Jay, where are you going to be?
10:46 I'd like to become, like, call for DOR and Slengton and win the World Superbike Championship.
10:53 Excellent, you could be a Welsh World Superbike Champion.
10:55 We've never ever had that, have we?

11:01 Now I've managed to track down the Championship Series leader.
11:14 The man who's running away with it, Howard Mainwaring and his dad and manager and mechanic and bottle washer and everything.

11:23 Howard, we've just been to see you out there in a race and you romped it.
11:27 I think it was fair to say.
11:28 Yeah, it's just nice to enjoy it really.

11:31 It's nice to run away with it sometimes.
11:32 But you are running away with it because, tell me how many races you haven't won this year?
11:36 Erm, one.
11:37 One? Out of how many? Do you know how many?
11:39 Erm, not really, I've done a few though.
11:41 There's a lot, I know there's a lot. You only won, you only, you only didn't win one.
11:44 Why didn't you win that? What happened then?
11:46 Because, erm, my bike broke.
11:47 Flippin' heck, I don't know. That's, that's, that's tremendous that.
11:50 So have you, how long have you been doing this? You look like you've been doing it all your life from the way you ride.
11:54 No, not really. I did motocross at first.
11:56 Yeah?
11:57 I won everything on that, erm, Chess Champion.
12:00 Then I did karting, and I won the Cadet Championship on that.
12:03 Then, flippin' heck.
12:04 Then we heard that the age was lowered for the junior bikes, Kajiva 80s.
12:08 Right.
12:09 We thought that would be good fun.
12:10 Oh, right.
12:11 So we just enjoy it.
12:12 Right, because, oh right, so you only did karting and, and, erm, motocross because you were too young for road racing?
12:17 Yeah, exactly.
12:18 Right. So is that, Steve, is that something that's close to your heart, road racing?
12:21 Are you, is it, is this, I find a lot of this is like father, like son.
12:24 It is close to me heart, but that's not really the case as such.
12:28 It's nice for him to go out.
12:29 You're a race racer though, are you?
12:30 That's right, yeah.
12:31 I used to race in the 80s, British Championship.
12:36 I've had some really good results at meetings that I've clashed as a supervisor.
12:40 Yeah?
12:41 He was always in the top ten finishers.
12:43 Excellent.
12:44 And I just thought it'd be nice if he enjoys doing it, but he enjoys doing it.
12:49 Yeah?
12:50 And wants to go further if we can.
12:51 Well, I'm sure you will with the way you ride.
12:53 But tell me about your bike, Howard.
12:54 What is it that you're riding?
12:55 A Kachee V-80.
12:56 Right.
12:57 It's up to racing standards at the moment.
12:59 It seems pretty good, but you've got two bikes, haven't you?
13:01 Yeah, one's for the wet, one's set up for the wet.
13:04 How do you like racing in the wet?
13:05 I hate riding in the wet, mate.
13:07 It's nice, I like the slides on the sides.
13:08 Yeah? Oh, you're a brave man. I don't know, flipping it.
13:11 So you've got two bikes, you've got a fantastic set up here,
13:14 but it's, junior racing isn't, isn't that expensive.
13:18 I mean, can you put a price on, on a season's racing?
13:21 I mean, once you've got your bike, and forgetting this van,
13:24 because you don't need this, really.
13:25 No, the cost to do junior racing, really,
13:27 you need three to four thousand pounds a year to be able to do it properly.
13:32 It's not a fortune, is it?
13:33 No, it's not, really.
13:34 No, no, it's not by the top.
13:36 So what's the next step? You're going to win this.
13:38 I don't think there's much doubt that you're going to take the trophy home at the end of the season.
13:43 You're 13 now, aren't you?
13:44 Yeah, just 13, a couple of months.
13:46 So you've got a couple of years and a bit left in this, if you want.
13:49 Yeah.
13:50 What's the next step from that? Where do you go, or where do you hope to go?
13:52 I want to go super bike racing, brick super bike racing.

14:04 They're very fast, aren't they, wearing these, lads?

14:15 In fact, when you're watching them on the circuit,
14:17 if you didn't know that they were only kids, you'd swear they were grown up big people.
14:20 They are very, very proficient, but they've done everything else, that's what I can't believe.
14:23 They're only young, but they've been everywhere.
14:25 I know trials riding, motocross, you name it, they've seen to have done it.
14:28 They've had to go everything, and I'll tell you what I like, is in the pit area, the paddock,
14:31 very friendly atmosphere. All the kids are mates.
14:33 Yeah, yeah.
14:34 And the parents are mates.
14:35 They all get on.
14:36 You go to some of the senior events, the older folks, and they're at each other's throats or whatever.
14:39 I've seen some good punch-ups in paddocks.
14:41 Yeah, yeah.
14:42 None of that today.
14:43 Big happy family, yeah.
14:44 I think you should have a crack at this, you know.
14:46 Give over, I'm far too big.
14:48 No, no, well, see, I've been having a look round, and some of these youngsters are quite tall, you know, and stocky.
14:55 And I think if you put a set of leathers on, turned up with a helmet on, kept the visor down,
14:59 I think you'd easy pass for a 14-year-old.
15:01 You cheeky sod.
15:09 OK, then, perhaps it's a 15-year-old.
15:12 And coming up after the break, I visit a very biker-friendly city.
15:16 Think of a place where you would see a lot of motorcycles.
15:30 The Isle of Man? No.
15:32 Matlock Bath? No.
15:34 Devil's Bridge?
15:36 Box Hill? No, no.
15:39 No.
15:40 Bristol.
15:45 Bristol?
15:46 Yeah, Bristol.
15:48 Because Bristol is a very, very biker-friendly place.
15:51 There's loads of them.
15:52 The city's full of them.
15:53 But this hasn't just happened overnight.
15:55 Somebody has worked very, very hard to achieve all of this.
15:58 Look who.
16:06 Well, I'll tell you who's responsible.
16:08 It's MAG, the Motorcycle Action Group.
16:10 They've done all the donkey work for you, and it's now a really biker-friendly place.
16:13 And this man, Lou Jueland, is the local rep, local area rep for MAG.
16:17 So what did you set out to achieve here in Bristol, Lou?
16:20 Well, in the very beginning, we wanted to approach the council
16:23 and ask them for motorcycles to be able to use the bus lanes.
16:26 We recognised that there was a problem with transport around the city centre
16:30 and people coming into the city.
16:32 And there is obviously a solution they were looking for.
16:35 And we recognised that motorcycles could be part of that solution.
16:38 We've been very successful with the council.
16:40 The council have been very biker-friendly towards us.
16:43 And now that we've got the use of bus lanes,
16:46 we've then approached the council and asked them for secure parking
16:50 to further encourage motorcyclists to use their bikes instead of cars
16:53 coming into the city, i.e. for shopping and commuting.
16:57 And now here at Castle Green, we've got these wonderful, solid, secure bike parking facilities
17:03 where all you have to do is bring a padlock, link your bike up to it,
17:08 and it deters the theft of bikes,
17:11 so further encouraging people to use motorcycles instead of cars.
17:15 I think it's fantastic.
17:16 And I think using bus lanes is a safer place to be on a motorcycle.
17:21 Because you must have had a big trial period, did you?
17:23 Because I know there were certain reservations from certain people about using bus lanes, was there?
17:27 Absolutely, yes.
17:28 When we first approached the council and we sat around the table,
17:31 the bus company, obviously, who use the bus lanes primarily,
17:35 they did voice an objection.
17:37 The police had reservations about us using bus lanes.
17:41 Taxi drivers as well felt that it might hold up the flow of traffic.
17:46 But after a six-month trial period and we got around the table again,
17:50 the police said their original fears were unfounded, there'd be no accidents.
17:54 The bus company were happy for us to use the bus lanes and no problem.
17:58 Excellent, superb, well worth all the effort.
18:00 Now, this secure parking, you've got, I don't know, how many have you got here?
18:04 There's approximately 18 here.
18:06 Right, and I noticed throughout the city as well you've got motorcycle-only parking bays,
18:10 and there does seem to be an awful lot of bikes in Bristol.
18:13 Yes.
18:14 Is it bringing more bikes into the city, this?
18:16 Well, certainly around the Bristol area, there are more bike owners per capita
18:21 than anywhere else in the country.
18:23 And the secure bike parking scheme we have here,
18:27 we are now approaching the council asking them to extend that
18:30 to all the motorcycle parking bays around the city.
18:33 Well, I hope they do.
18:35 So we've got bikes in bus lanes, that's done, been there, got that, done it.
18:39 Secure parking, got that, done it.
18:41 What next?
18:42 Well, some people will be aware that the idea of road tolling has been suggested,
18:48 whereas if you want to take your car into a city centre
18:51 or you want to travel to a city centre, then you will have to pay for that privilege.
18:55 And now we are in the middle of lobbying the council to make motorcyclists exempt from these tolls.
19:00 And already the response has been favourable, so we're hoping for success there too.
19:06 So MAG have actually achieved their aims, they've got everything they want,
19:09 but there was obviously someone who had to say yes,
19:11 and this is one of the men that had to say yes from the local planning and transport committee,
19:15 I hope I've got that right.
19:16 That's correct, yes.
19:17 Right, Councillor Richard Pyle.
19:18 So, Richard, you said yes.
19:19 Yes.
19:20 So what view have you got out of it?
19:22 Well, we're trying to make Bristol an accessible city,
19:25 and we want people to come into the city.
19:26 At the moment, there are half a million vehicle trips, most of them cars, across the city centre.
19:32 Very bad congestion, and we're just trying to encourage other people
19:36 to make use of other modes of transport.
19:40 So if they use public transport, that's fine, if they walk, that's fine.
19:43 We've got about 16% of the commuters now walk to work.
19:46 Motorcyclists, there are about 5 or 6% commuters now, and that's growing fast.
19:51 So as the congestion eases, are you getting more bikes into the city?
19:54 Can you actually see?
19:56 Well, I can't honestly claim that the congestion's eased
19:58 because of the growth in traffic every year,
20:00 but it's probably better than it would be without encouraging the other modes of transport.
20:05 We've also allowed motorcyclists to use the bus lane,
20:10 which has been a great benefit because clearly they can get in quickly,
20:13 they don't interfere with each other, and we think it's much safer.
20:16 Yeah, yeah.
20:17 Well, I would agree on all of those things.
20:18 You know, if I could use a bus lane where I live, I'd be in work in 5 minutes.
20:21 Yeah.
20:22 It'd take me 5 minutes.
20:23 So do you have contact with other councils throughout the country?
20:25 Are you spreading the good word?
20:27 Well, they contact us and ask us for information,
20:30 and we get the occasional visit, and they come down and look at the secure parking devices for motorbikes,
20:34 look at our bus lanes, and go away.
20:36 We hope that they take the message and spread the word.
20:39 Good. Well, so do I. Keep spreading the good word.

21:04 All that covers up is the pillion perch, and it is a bit of a perch,
