00:00 On Wednesday, the government convened a 40-minute meeting with the acting Deputy Chief of Mission
00:05 from the US, who was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs office located in Delhi's
00:10 South Block.
00:11 While specific details of the meeting have not been disclosed, it follows a statement
00:15 by a US State Department spokesperson the previous day.
00:18 The spokesperson mentioned that the department is actively monitoring reports concerning
00:22 the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and urged New Delhi to ensure a fair and expeditious
00:28 legal process for the detained Aam Aadmi Party leader.
00:31 The US State Department's remarks followed days after Germany's foreign office emphasised
00:36 that Mr Kejriwal, like any other Indian citizen facing charges, is entitled to a fair and
00:41 impartial trial.
00:42 This statement from Germany prompted a strong reaction from the Indian government, leading
00:46 to the summoning of the German envoy and branding the foreign office spokesperson's comment
00:51 as blatant interference in internal matters.
00:54 The External Affairs Ministry stressed, "We view such remarks as interfering in our judicial
00:58 process and undermining the independence of our judiciary," adding that biased assumptions
01:03 are unwarranted.
01:04 Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last week in connection with the
01:09 alleged liquor policy scam that has roiled his AAP and provoked furious protests from
01:13 the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
01:16 Kejriwal was this week sent to jail till March 28.
01:19 The Enforcement Directorate believes the now-scrapped liquor policy provided an impossibly high
01:24 profit margin of 185 per cent for retailers and 12 per cent for wholesalers.
01:28 Of the latter, 6 per cent, over 600 crore, were bribes and the money was allegedly used
01:33 to fund the AAP's poll campaigns.
01:35 Meanwhile, Mr Kejriwal is in the Delhi High Court today to challenge his arrest.
01:39 The Enforcement Directorate has identified the Chief Minister as a key conspirator in
01:43 the case.
01:44 Yet, Kejriwal and his party colleagues, including ex-Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sesodia, Rajasthan
01:48 MP Sanjay Singh and former Health Minister Satyendra Jain, have vehemently refuted these
01:53 allegations.
01:54 Both the AAP and opposition parties have condemned the BJP-led central government for allegedly
01:58 utilising central agencies such as the ED to target political adversaries and critics
02:03 ahead of the general election.
02:04 The AAP has criticised Mr Kejriwal's arrest, asserting that its timing was deliberate to
02:08 disrupt his plans to campaign for the party.
