00:00 We've got a green flag and we've got three lights on already, four and now five.
00:04 It's the Australian Grand Prix, it's lights out and away we go.
00:07 Verstappen and Sainz getting away pretty evenly.
00:10 Leclerc's coming at Lando Norris.
00:12 Verstappen's gonna lead into Turn 1 and does so from Carlos Sainz.
00:16 Then comes Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri.
00:19 And for once they've all got through the first corner unscathed.
00:22 Yeah, they were tiptoeing through there and Sainz then having a look at the inside into Turn 3.
00:26 But more as a distraction I think.
00:28 In fact, Verstappen getting that far ahead of him into Turn 1 really opened the road up nicely for Sainz.
00:34 Sergio Perez under pressure from George Russell and getting passed by the Mercedes.
00:38 Russell, who this time last year was leading on the opening lap, has made up a place once again.
00:43 And this time past the red bull of Sergio Perez.
00:46 But it's Verstappen out in the lead then from Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
00:51 The race is on.
00:52 Alex Albon was saying yesterday, not exactly beneficial for grip out on the track.
00:57 On the far side, look at this. Carlos Sainz with DRS.
01:00 He's almost wheel to wheel. Carlos Sainz takes the lead of the Australian Grand Prix.
01:05 And on lap 2, where a couple of years ago he went off and his race was ended.
01:10 This time around his race just being made.
01:14 One detection point, two DRSs there. That's why he had another helping once he'd made the move.
01:19 And that puts him into clear air. He can now manage his tyres much better.
01:24 So Verstappen will be desperate to get immediately back into the slipstream with DRS on the Ferrari.
01:31 Listen to the roar! 132,000 fans around Albert Park.
01:36 Absolutely loving that! Verstappen with DRS not making the impression he would want along the main straight.
01:42 Carlos Sainz leads. And what a move that was!
01:45 - "I just lost the car. Really weird." - "Yeah, understood. No problems."
01:49 Well, let's have a look on board with Carlos Sainz.
01:51 And it was very easy for him before they got into Turn 9.
01:55 Yeah, I'd like to see Turn 7 and 8 to see what happened.
01:58 That's what Max Verstappen is talking about. Adrenaline is a wonderful thing.
02:02 "The car is loose."
02:04 Which means the back end is sliding. Oversteer is what he's talking about there.
02:11 So I'd imagine they've cranked a lot of front wing on to try to protect the graining of the front tyres.
02:17 And it's making him. A lot of smoke coming out of the Red Bull there.
02:21 Must be where it's touching... Or is it where it's touching the ground?
02:24 That car's smoking. Problem then for the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.
02:29 Is there something touching? Yeah.
02:31 His engine's gone. He's got a new power unit in that Red Bull for this weekend.
02:36 And it looks like that new power unit is giving him all sorts of grief on the track.
02:41 - Where in 2022... - It's the tyre, isn't it?
02:44 - Is it the tyre? - There's something going on because the exhaust pipe's sort of in the middle.
02:47 And that looks like it's coming from the... No, it is. It's a motor issue.
02:52 This is Max Verstappen, championship leader, going very, very slowly.
02:56 - And he could well be out of the race here. - And his suspension.
02:59 Ah, ah, ah...
03:01 Blue smoke. On fire. Fire.
03:04 The right rear's on fire. The right rear brake is on fire. It's completely melted, the tyre.
03:11 And I don't know if this is an engine issue.
03:14 I mean, obviously, it's the end of the race. It's still the end of the race. They're not going to fix this.
03:18 It's made an absolute mess of the right rear corner.
03:21 The right rear is on fire.
03:23 And, yeah, whatever, it's the end of Max Verstappen's Australian Grand Prix.
03:28 So it's game on then, isn't it? Suddenly, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes even,
03:34 know they've got a chance to win this Grand Prix.
03:37 Verstappen retired on lap three of this race.
03:41 A 43 race finishing streak over in an instance.
03:46 And in his hopes of a record-equalling tenth consecutive victory, going up in smoke.
03:52 - Yeah, did you see that sort of explosion there? - Yeah.
03:55 That kicked out of the side.
03:57 Meanwhile, this is Lewis Hamilton heading down towards turn one just a few moments ago.
04:03 On the hard tyre. Struggling for grip. Struggling in turning into that corner and not able to stay on the track.
04:10 Seconds clear. Can really control this race how he wants to through this phase.
04:15 Doing a mega job out there.
04:17 Right behind the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll. Right into the path of Lewis Hamilton.
04:23 And Lewis Hamilton now picking up the slipstream behind Sergio Pérez.
04:27 Will fancy his chances going down towards turn three.
04:30 He's going to have to go the long way round or try the old switcheroo down under.
04:34 But it doesn't quite work for him.
04:36 And you, Pit, when it suits you.
04:38 - He's a car bust. - Yeah, OK, copy.
04:41 That car that Lewis Hamilton is talking about is Sergio Pérez.
04:45 He's the car in front of him currently.
04:48 We ride on board with Sergio Pérez behind these two, hoping to pick up some scraps.
04:52 And, yeah, in comes Carlos Sainz, which made a lot of sense.
04:56 - And Lewis Hamilton. - OK. Engine failure. Engine failure.
04:59 And it's engine failure for Lewis Hamilton here in Albert Park.
05:05 And where can he park that car? Or can he limp home to the pits?
05:10 The pit stops that cost you 20 seconds now cost you only 13 seconds.
05:14 This is played as we see Lewis Hamilton climbing out of his car
05:18 beautifully into the hands of Fernando Alonso and the Aston Martin team.
05:23 And that is the moment Lewis Hamilton knew it was game over.
05:26 But it hasn't sort of thrown any pistons out or leaking loads of oil, has it?
05:31 - It just kind of like a rocking ship. - Yeah, he felt the sort of that.
05:35 Rather confirming what his teammates said about that car before he retired.
05:40 Indeed. Mercedes are not at the races, are they?
05:43 They've not got a great race car.
05:45 The Astra is now being told to swap positions
05:49 and to move aside and let your teammate through.
05:52 And that's exactly what he's done.
05:54 And that must feel especially horrible in your home race.
05:58 In comes Charles Leclerc for his pit stop.
06:01 - Norris didn't pit. - Orlando Norris didn't pit.
06:03 Oscar Piastri didn't pit.
06:05 Ted Kravitz, down to you.
06:07 They never know when the Ferrari is actually going to pit or isn't.
06:10 But it's better for McLaren to stay out.
06:13 And rather if they did just follow Leclerc into the pits,
06:16 they'd just be assured of staying in front.
06:18 But that was crucial for Leclerc rejoining ahead of Sergio Perez.
06:21 And that's given Alonso a chance, hasn't it, Croppi? Back to you.
06:25 And only just joining ahead of Sergio Perez,
06:28 only just joining ahead of Fernando Alonso,
06:31 we've now seen Charles Leclerc's pit miss turn into a three-car battle.
06:35 A little look at Piastri and Alonso.
06:38 Initially down into Turn 11, didn't work there.
06:41 Piastri with much fresher tyres.
06:44 Well, thought about trying to move in the middle of that straight before the corner.
06:48 Wasn't room, but eventually squeezed his way past.
06:51 And that is Yuki Tsunoda getting past Pierre Gasly.
06:54 A few moments ago and up into ninth place.
06:57 Sainz has got clear air in front of him. Will he go past his lap?
07:01 George Russell wants to go for sixth place.
07:04 And he almost had half a sniff there going into Turn 9.
07:07 Now, is he closer on this particular part of the track with DRS?
07:11 Extra 15 kilometers an hour once again makes the move.
07:14 Once again, it isn't quite there for him.
07:17 He's a couple of car lengths adrift.
07:19 Here is Carlos Sainz. You can hear the cheers of the crowd.
07:22 3.3 miles to go. And oh, George Russell on the last lap of the race.
07:27 And he's had a big contact with the wall.
07:31 Yeah, so into six and seven. This is where he had to try to...
07:34 And he's got really close up behind the Aston.
07:38 Lost downforce and then the wheels tipped the car on its side.
07:42 So it was actually the wheels kept on by the tethers as they should.
07:46 They got underneath the car.
07:48 So Alonso was slower into there than Russell expected.
07:53 By some margin, actually.
07:55 And as soon as that happened, Russell then had to get on the brakes.
08:00 He had oversteer. Put him wide.
08:03 But as I say, the tethers keep the wheels in place.
08:06 But at that point, it's the wheels that actually turned the car over.
08:11 Wow, what a finish.
08:14 Staggered they didn't red flag it, to be honest.
08:16 It's a standing ovation for Ferrari and Albert Park.
08:19 It's a Ferrari 1-2 in Australia.
08:23 It's victory for Carlos Sainz.
08:26 What a performance for Carlos Sainz here.
08:30 And I think around the world, everyone should stand and applaud his efforts this weekend.
08:36 Charles Leclerc comes home for third.
08:38 It's another podium for Lando Norris.
08:40 His 14th in Formula 1.
08:42 And it's another fourth place finish.
08:44 His second in a row in 2024 for Oscar Piastri, who too gets the standing ovation.
08:51 Yeah, and you're not really supposed to go near your team in case somebody slips spanners in your pocket or something.
08:57 A bit of extra weight.
08:58 I get it all.
08:59 They don't have pockets, do they?
09:01 I just want to... You want to see the emotion, don't you?
09:04 And there he is, Carlos Sainz, a race winner.
09:08 Takes it to fourth in the championship.
09:11 And ahead of Charles Leclerc.
09:12 The gap now, just four points between Red Bull and Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.
09:17 Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, a brilliant third and fourth for McLaren.
