00:00 The Chinese Navy followed and radioed the Philippine Maritime Patrol Mission to Pag-asa Island.
00:06 Several Chinese ships were spotted near the area that is part of the exclusive economic zone of our country.
00:12 J.P. Soriano brought you the latest.
00:15 With the Philippine Coast Guard Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, or BFAR,
00:23 the group set out on Monday to Pag-asa Island for the Maritime Patrol Mission and Marine Scientific Research.
00:31 Around 10.45 a.m. on Tuesday morning, as Pag-asa Island was approaching,
00:39 the Chinese Navy ship suddenly appeared and seemed to be following the direction of the PCG vehicles.
00:48 According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the Chinese Navy ship was radioed by BRP Cabra and BRP Sindangan,
00:54 but it did not respond.
00:56 An hour later, it turned around and changed direction.
01:02 Past midday on Tuesday, the PCG vessels arrived at Pag-asa Island.
01:07 "Kapuso, what you see behind me is Pag-asa Island.
01:11 It is part of the Kalayaan Island Group and part of the province of Palawan.
01:17 So, in front of that, you can see the Chinese militia vessels.
01:24 And they have been there for a long time.
01:26 You can see that they are steady, they are not moving."
01:29 According to the PCG, the Chinese militia vessels reached Siam
01:33 and a Chinese Coast Guard was spotted near Pag-asa Island until Wednesday.
01:39 "Until we arrived at Pag-asa Island,
01:41 the Chinese militia vessels were still spotted near Pag-asa Island
01:47 and this was the Chinese Coast Guard ship."
01:50 The BFAR started with marine researchers from the University of the Philippines
01:57 the Joint Maritime Resource Assessment on Pag-asa Case.
02:01 Their mission is to know the situation of the cases.
02:04 Especially last year,
02:06 there were spotted dead corals in San Dique 2
02:09 that the doubt is not from the surroundings of Pag-asa Island.
02:13 Aside from the risk of biodiversity in Pag-asa Island,
02:18 one of the experts wanted to know
02:21 if the discovery of dead and crushed corals is intentional.
02:25 "If it's true that those are really dumb,
02:27 it will almost be on the above water already.
02:30 So, actually, it's only part of the assessment.
02:33 We will be able to look into that area where there will be possibly
02:38 some dumb corals that are not from that area.
02:41 But for now, we don't know."
02:42 The position of Pag-asa Island and its surroundings are important
02:48 in the supply of fish and food in the whole Philippines.
02:51 So, no country can stop the research of our marine researchers
02:58 around Pag-asa Island.
03:01 "Pag-asa belongs to the Philippines.
03:03 So, regardless whether they are there or they are not there,
03:06 we still have the sovereignty rights to do this kind of scientific research
03:12 that falls within the waters in Pag-asa Island."
