00:00 A total of 3,046 contract doctors resigned in the last three years, according to the

00:09 Health Ministry, a figure a senator described as troubling.

00:14 In a written reply to Dr R. A. Lingeswaran, the Ministry said 924 contract doctors had

00:20 left the civil service last year, while 1,354 left the service in 2022, and 768 had quit

00:29 in the previous year.

00:31 Among the reasons cited by contract doctors when quitting the civil service were better

00:35 office in the private sector and public universities, personal problems and health issues.

00:42 Lingeswaran said the Ministry must find out if contract doctors are leaving out of frustration

00:47 because of the long wait for a permanent appointment.

00:51 The former Sungai Bakar Hospital director told FMT that contract doctors could also

00:55 be leaving due to the long hours they have to put in while being attached to a hospital.

01:02 Lingeswaran said as at the end of last year, there were 14,511 contract doctors serving

01:07 the Health Ministry, adding that 6,478 were housemen and 8,033 were medical officers awaiting

01:16 permanent appointments.
