00:00:00 So Paris, France, the Siegel Center. You got to pick one.
00:00:03 On today's part of my take, we have our brackets. March Madness is finally here,
00:00:14 and we're going to break it all down. Someone in the selection committee is a real pervert. We're
00:00:18 going to talk about that. We have Jon Rothstein on the show, as is tradition. He is going to break
00:00:24 down all the regions, tell us some fun nuggets. We also have to talk to him about potentially
00:00:31 losing friends and a wife and kids over March Madness. We sleep in May. Problems at home.
00:00:36 Problems at home. We got who's back of the week. Justin Fields has been traded. We're going to
00:00:40 actually talk about that after Jon Rothstein. So anyone who wants some thoughts on that. We
00:00:45 also had some other moves in the NFL that we will discuss. And before we get to all of that,
00:00:51 a quick word from our friends at DraftKings. The thrill and excitement of March Mania is here in

00:02:51 March 18th, and we have our brackets. My bracket's busted. We have our brackets and someone in that
00:02:59 committee is a real sick pervert. I actually think it's probably someone that Hank knows
00:03:04 because he's been smiling ear to ear since the brackets have been announced. The part of my
00:03:10 take region, it wasn't just that they had to put me versus PFT, Wisconsin versus James Madison in
00:03:15 the first round. They also put Vermont and Duke in the same quadrant. Yeah, Hank, they just loaded
00:03:20 it up. Famous graduate of Duke University, Henry Lockwood. Famous graduate of Vermont, Jake Marsh.
00:03:25 Yeah, that is actually, we'll get to our game, but the worst part about what they did to us
00:03:32 is not just the two of us because we can survive anything. We're stronger than steel,
00:03:37 stronger than iron. We can survive anything. It's the fact that the winner of our game
00:03:42 will then go up against either Hank and Duke or Jake and Vermont and they both will be like,
00:03:48 "We don't really care," as one of our teams loses to those fucking bums.
00:03:53 I've seen this movie before. Here's what's going to happen.
00:03:56 Splitting us apart.
00:03:57 Here's what's going to happen.
00:03:59 It's going to be, it doesn't matter who wins between me and Big Cat
00:04:02 because Jake Marsh is going to be in the second round.
00:04:05 And he's going to say, "I'm actually kind of rooting for James Madison or Wisconsin. Yeah,
00:04:09 I want Vermont to win, but I want you guys to be happy."
00:04:12 Yeah. Oh yeah. He's going to have a smile on his face when he shakes her hand. "Hey, sorry.
00:04:16 Sorry I just beat you. I'm the best in the office again." Despite the fact that this is perverted
00:04:20 and it's sick and it's disgusting and there's somebody that's listening to part of my take
00:04:23 right now in some college ivory tower-
00:04:26 Oh, they're all loving it.
00:04:27 Some athletic director and he's silently jacking his dick off, just listening to us in pain.
00:04:32 Slow strokes.
00:04:33 I want that person to know that they're a pervert,
00:04:34 but that's actually not the sickest thing they did. The sickest thing they did was put UVA in.
00:04:39 Yeah.
00:04:39 That's disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.
00:04:42 Let's give some shout outs to the people who got snubbed. The bubbles burst. It was a crazy
00:04:49 weekend of basketball. Saturday, you saw basically the bubble shrink and shrink and shrink because
00:04:54 NC State won, beat North Carolina. They weren't going to get in. New Mexico won the Mountain West.
00:04:59 They probably weren't going to get in. Temple beat FAU and then it became a Temple UAB. One
00:05:05 of those teams was not going to get in. The bubble just got smaller and smaller and smaller.
00:05:09 The loser, the big loser was the Big East who ended up getting three teams in, which is crazy
00:05:16 because of the second ranked conference. Some people are saying, our friend Frank Fleming
00:05:21 is saying that because the Big East is broadcasted on Fox and the Mountain West is broadcasted on
00:05:28 CBS, what is the tournament broadcast on? That would be on CBS, big guy.
00:05:32 Interesting. Also, we have another theory. Max, could you please share it?
00:05:36 The committee is anti-Italian.
00:05:40 Anti-Italian American discrimination.
00:05:44 This is an example of anti-Italian.
00:05:47 Why? Why is it going against the-
00:05:50 The Big East is Italian. It's an Italian league.
00:05:53 I actually agree with you.
00:05:54 Yeah, I agree with that. You got some Catholic schools. You got New York schools. You got-
00:05:58 Patino.
00:05:59 Providence, Patino. Yeah.
00:06:00 You got Patino and then you got legends like Roly Massimino, great Italian.
00:06:05 Jim Boeheim.
00:06:08 Karna Secka.
00:06:09 Patrick Ewing.
00:06:11 John Thompson. The most famous Italians you can find out there.
00:06:15 That's Italian league.
00:06:17 Yeah, you got Patrick Ewing, the first Italian American coach of Georgetown University.
00:06:20 Yeah, Kyle Neptune ends in a vowel, Italian.
00:06:24 Jay Wright looks like he could be Italian.
00:06:25 Jay Wright is Italian. He's not Italian, but he got there as quick as he could.
00:06:29 The suits are Italian.
00:06:32 It was though. The Big East got screwed. St. John's wasn't even in the last four out.
00:06:36 Seton Hall, who beat UConn, the number one overall seed, wasn't in. Providence didn't get in.
00:06:43 It's bullshit.
00:06:44 Yeah, it's kind of crazy too when you look at what the NCAA did by inventing the net ranking.
00:06:50 It's a NCAA evaluation tool to determine what teams are better. It's their own metric
00:06:58 that they invented, that they claim to rely on. They did this and they did it so that they could
00:07:04 have some data to show people when they complained about bubble teams. They invented a whole new
00:07:09 formula and then they just threw it out the window when it came time to decide on which teams were in.
00:07:14 It's ridiculous, but it's also very funny that they just created as a distraction, like, "Hey,
00:07:18 maybe this will make people shut the fuck up for a while and then we'll just put in the teams."
00:07:22 If Oppenheimer had spent those four years inventing the atomic bomb and then Harry Truman just
00:07:28 surrenders right afterwards before they drop it. It's so dumb what they did. Do they have an
00:07:34 explanation?
00:07:35 Well, so the heroes won. Matt Norlander, who works for CBS, talked to the committee. They said,
00:07:41 "Q1, New Mexico would have been out if it didn't win the Mountain West. Also,
00:07:45 Q1 wins were why Michigan State got a nine," which was pretty shocking. Also,
00:07:49 said, "The Mountain West wins mostly came in conference. That's why so many teams
00:07:53 see that low." There's two competing things. Mountain West teams are like, "Our league got
00:08:00 seated low and Big East fans are like, 'But you got six in and we got three in. It's bullshit.'"
00:08:05 I think it's quad one wins is what they're looking at, but that also doesn't make sense
00:08:10 because Michigan State had three quad one wins. I think Providence had six.
00:08:15 So it really was no rhyme or reason. Then you have Duquesne, who got an 11 seed,
00:08:19 who I'm pretty sure they were just the committee got lazy and they're like, "Whoever wins this
00:08:23 game is going to get an 11 seed." There's no reason James Madison shouldn't have gotten an
00:08:27 11 seed over. James Madison better than Duquesne. James Madison got a 12, Duquesne got an 11.
00:08:34 It's just crazy. Duquesne got the same seed as like, "Hold on, I got to find it."
00:08:38 It's almost like they just looked at the name of the school. "Oh, Duquesne. Yeah,
00:08:41 that feels like an 11 seed to me. Put them in there."
00:08:43 All right. So New Mexico, who they admit was on the bubble, is number 22 in net and they have the
00:08:49 same seed as Duquesne, who was 83 in net. And Oregon, who is 59 and NC State, who is 63. This
00:08:58 might be the first year where the arguments about how the bracketologists, the committee, did it,
00:09:04 is all valid. It feels like they just kind of winged this thing. Both in seeding and who they
00:09:11 left out. Obviously the bubble getting so tight. Virginia, that should have just been an easy,
00:09:17 "Do we want to watch more Virginia?"
00:09:19 It's so funny that not only did they take a team that they knew would piss people off,
00:09:22 because they might not have been deserving to get in, but also that they picked the one team in
00:09:27 America that would piss the most people off because now we all have to watch a Virginia
00:09:30 standalone game.
00:09:31 Standalone game. Also just one last thing about Michigan State, who I thought should have been in,
00:09:35 but when you put the resume up, you could definitely poke some holes in it. When they
00:09:41 went to, when they were revealing the bracket on CBS, they asked about Michigan State and someone
00:09:47 said, it might've been Clark Kellogg, was like, "They're playing really well, even though they
00:09:50 haven't won a game."
00:09:51 Okay.
00:09:52 Yeah.
00:09:53 They're competitive.
00:09:53 They haven't won games. They haven't won games, but they're playing really well.
00:09:56 So it's awesome just having a bracket in your hands, holding the bracket, looking at it,
00:10:00 smelling it when it comes out of the printer and it's still warm. Everything about a bracket
00:10:04 I love.
00:10:04 It's the best.
00:10:05 I just went with my balls. I did a balls first pick and I think I'm going to keep this bracket.
00:10:12 I think I'm going to trust my initial reaction on the bracket.
00:10:14 Who do you have in the 12-5 matchup?
00:10:18 12-5 matchup in the South?
00:10:20 Yeah.
00:10:21 I have the JMU Dukes. I have James Madison winning two games. And Hank, by the way,
00:10:27 this is the time, if there was ever a time, you versus Jake, Duke versus Vermont,
00:10:32 they are the cat amounts. If you lose to Vermont, you should get a cat.
00:10:36 Oh.
00:10:36 All right.
00:10:38 Hank is-
00:10:39 I tried.
00:10:39 Part of my take is civil war in this quadrant and Hank does not give a fuck.
00:10:46 And we knew it was happening.
00:10:47 I do have, I filled out a bracket as well. There's one matchup missing, Wisconsin JMU.
00:10:52 I wanted to give you guys the floor, maybe try and pitch me.
00:10:55 Okay. I'll pitch you. It's hell for me because I just bought back into this Wisconsin team.
00:11:00 They played their balls off in the conference tournament. I mean, I've watched every single
00:11:06 Wisconsin game. They were playing very bad basketball in February. They fought hard.
00:11:09 Beat the refs?
00:11:11 They beat the refs on Saturday. They played toe to toe with Illinois. Illinois is really good.
00:11:15 They have two guys that just, you can't stop. So I was like feeling excited. I was like,
00:11:20 this is a team that I talked about it in January. They have the makings, every piece
00:11:26 that's needed for a run. JMU is a problem. They're really fucking good.
00:11:31 They scored the basketball.
00:11:32 They score the basketball. They shoot the three. Wisconsin doesn't defend the three.
00:11:36 I'm just hoping that height and scoring down low can work. But it's a lose, lose for me because
00:11:42 if Wisconsin beats JMU, they're the favorites. They're the five seed. And if we lose, it's like,
00:11:47 ha ha, this one's going to probably hurt. It won't hurt as bad as 2015 because nothing will,
00:11:53 but it will hurt very, very bad.
00:11:55 What about like sweet 16, 2016 early date, Florida?
00:11:59 That hurt very bad. Probably won't hurt as much as that because it's, it's the first round.
00:12:04 What about Kentucky?
00:12:05 Won't hurt. So it'd be number four. It'd be number four on, on Wisconsin basketball losses.
00:12:12 Big cats, right? Like Wisconsin,
00:12:15 yeah, Wisconsin is supposed to win this game. We're the underdogs for a reason as we should be.
00:12:20 But Hank, to make my case, this will actually, I'm not sure if this is going to make the case
00:12:26 for me or against me. I think I'm going to be there. So it's about 15 minutes away from where
00:12:32 the wedding's going to be. It's like the universe lining up for me. I'm going to go there straight
00:12:36 from the wedding. It's a black tie wedding too. It's a Haitian black tie wedding. And I'm going
00:12:41 to go 12 minutes down the road, go to Barclays. That might actually work against us because if
00:12:47 you look at the history of Barstool and the teams that we root for breaking hearts, if there's
00:12:52 somebody there in person, that person usually loses, right? Maybe not from your perspective
00:12:56 as a Patriots fan, but for most everybody else is like, this does feel like it's going to be,
00:13:00 we are underdogs and, and we are playing with house money, but it does feel like it will be
00:13:05 more heartbreaking for me if I were to be there in person to watch it lose.
00:13:10 Okay. But counterpoint, hold on. Don't fill it out yet. Counterpoint. Um, I just can visualize,
00:13:15 I'm going to be streaming me just at people love to watch me die on streams. The numbers spiking
00:13:22 as the game gets worse and worse. And then the like, you know, every 10 minutes, a clip coming
00:13:28 out of happy PFT, not on mushrooms, but looking like you might be on mushrooms. I haven't said,
00:13:33 I'm not going to take much. Okay. So he might be on mushrooms, happy PFT while everyone just
00:13:37 watches me die. Now, the last thing I'll say in defensive Wisconsin, this will 100% be the
00:13:44 trendiest 12, five upset. Yeah. Everyone's going to pick JMU. I was looking at the matchup. Cause
00:13:50 I was like, I'm nervous. I was looking at Ken Palm, Bart Torvik, trying to find it, texting all,
00:13:54 all my friends who make power ratings. It's going to be a very difficult game, uh, for Wisconsin to
00:14:00 win because I think James Madison is very good and they were criminally under seated, but
00:14:05 I just got to, just got to be taller. Just got to be taller. And AJ store has just got to be
00:14:10 awesome. Just the Hepburn. You mean AJ score? AJ score. And, and, and Max Klesman has to get his
00:14:17 groin replaced. It's going to come down to, this is actually the perfect litmus test for rest versus
00:14:22 rust. Yeah. That's it. Hank, do you believe in arrest or rest? We're playing good ball right
00:14:26 now? We're playing good ball right now. Jamie's had a lot of time to recover. What did you put
00:14:29 in there? Well, here's the other thing too, is you, you would love for me to die against Duke.
00:14:35 So that, that is correct. I'm thinking about the vibes. I don't want to get lashed out on
00:14:40 in person on Friday for Wisconsin with you. Cause PFT won't be there. And then you're going to
00:14:46 convince yourself that you're going to get revenge for 2015 and lose to Duke, which will be the best
00:14:51 content case. So I'm, I wrote Wisconsin. Okay. It's funny. Jamie who gets the world again,
00:14:56 they, they did this. Someone did this on purpose. Yeah. Someone did this on purpose. I said it on
00:15:02 Monday. I was like, I'm not trying to be a narcissist, but remember when we had standalone
00:15:07 games, bears versus commanders, bears versus Patriots. Like someone in, in the universe is
00:15:12 like, how can we squeeze it out of them and try to break them up via sport? Thank you. It's good.
00:15:17 No, wait, Hank, you're one of them. You're one of the perverts out there. You probably put a phone
00:15:22 call in, but even, even if it was just 12, five, I would be like, okay, that's kind of a quiz.
00:15:26 The fact that Duke's there sitting there against some sick fuck is just, oh, I know. I wish maybe
00:15:35 it would have been great if it was just like, and Villanova's in the tournament, Duke versus
00:15:38 that would have rocked. So we unveiled Hank's pick for that game on Wednesday's show. We'll
00:15:45 unveil Max's pick for that game. And then on Friday we'll unveil memes as big and then next
00:15:49 Monday, much anticipated memes pick next Monday I'll invent my pick, but yeah, the brackets out,
00:15:54 I'm just so excited. I'm so excited for college basketball. I'm C is my favorite.
00:15:57 I mean, Congress, we should talk about conference tournament a week because it was incredible. I,
00:16:03 I reached that point where I think last night I was up again at like 12 o'clock at night watching
00:16:10 our UT Arlington boys struggle with, uh, with, uh, who they playing grand Canyon,
00:16:16 but it's just these five days. I've just had nothing but basketball in my brain. I don't even
00:16:22 know. I just need to see a ball be bouncing at all times. Yeah. Hearing the squeaks. Yeah. And
00:16:27 there was just so many crazy games. I mean, the fact that NC state, that was one of the craziest
00:16:32 runs, five games, five days. And to beat Virginia when the Virginia should have fouled on a, on a,
00:16:39 a bank in three pointer and then kind of low key throttle NC, like they were up that entire game.
00:16:46 It was crazy. And then we had like every tournament had its own weird thing happened.
00:16:52 Kentucky losing in the first round, Tennessee losing in the first round, Bama getting smoked.
00:16:56 SEC was a bloodbath. Yeah. I can't say that. You could say, okay. It was a B bath. Yeah. B bath,
00:17:02 uh, Houston getting absolutely trucked by Iowa state. Uh, Wisconsin beating Purdue was
00:17:08 the happiest I've been in a while for any of my sports teams. I mean, that was a crazy game too.
00:17:14 Yeah. And the, the big pain for me is like, I've, I liked this Badgers team. They're so fun to watch,
00:17:19 especially when they're shooting the ball. Well, they're, they have fun guys. They're not the
00:17:23 typical, like slow it down, Virginia. Let's just fucking, you know, go 30 seconds, just passing
00:17:29 the ball around and then get a, you know, a good layup. It's very hard for me to root against a guy
00:17:33 named Chucky. I can't be like, God damn it. Chucky. I fucking hate you. No, it's like, that's
00:17:36 Chucky. Yeah. Yeah. But so, and then pack 12 had craziness like, and then, you know, every single
00:17:41 conference, it felt like the only conference that went chalk was the big East and Yukon just marches
00:17:47 on just dominating everyone. Yeah. I feel like this is a big setup for Yukon to just destroy
00:17:51 people again. Yeah. So who would you say? Cause I was going to say that NC state to me feels like
00:17:56 America's team or America's sweet destiny, America's sweetheart. Cause DJ burns can't root
00:18:01 against that guy. Just throwing his ass into people. He looks like escalate. He's he's the
00:18:05 new model of an escalate and he's just mowing people down with his ass. And then the fact that
00:18:09 he's such a silky smooth pass or two watching a big dude that can pass like that is so fun.
00:18:14 Uh, NC state feels like the team that, that most of America has fallen in love with. Um,
00:18:18 but besides them, who do you, who would you put as like the sentimental favorites?
00:18:23 Uh, sentimental favorites. Good question. But can I just say one thing about NC state and where
00:18:27 they're seated in the bracket? Um, I know that we're just going off vibes and everything, but I
00:18:32 was thinking about it. You have Houston and Tennessee futures. I do. I have Kentucky UNC
00:18:37 and Yukon futures. Kentucky wins their first game and Texas tech wins their first game. I was just
00:18:44 thinking about how I'm just going to watch that game and Patrick Holmes is going to be standing
00:18:47 behind the bench and just another future gone by Patrick. He's going to somehow come in and drop 30
00:18:52 God damn it. This guy. Uh, all right. Team of or America's team, America's sweetheart,
00:18:59 America's sweetheart. That's great. I mean, you usually don't find out until you get that upset,
00:19:03 but Hmm. Based off vibe, we'll Wade McNeice. We also need big, sexy merch for sure. Oh yeah.
00:19:11 Hey, I mean, yeah, he's gotta be our guy. Does he have a nickname yet?
00:19:17 I think I've heard, I've heard escalate means just keeps calling them big, sexy.
00:19:22 What about the cyber truck? The cyber truck. Yeah. We can, we can workshop something, but
00:19:28 I've already, we, we need to, we need to make a deal there. Yeah. You're the perfect person to
00:19:32 ask about that. It's coming on the show actually. Yeah, it was, it was Indiana state who didn't get
00:19:37 in. I feel bad for Indiana state. It fucking sucks. Cause they were so fun to watch this year.
00:19:42 Um, that definitely would have been the team that everyone was rooting for and pulling for.
00:19:46 Oh, I've got a, I've got another America's sweetheart, but they're going to get balanced
00:19:49 in the first round. Okay. Long beach state. Yeah. Cause their coach, their coach, uh, he and,
00:19:54 and the university mutually agreed to part ways after the season. Essentially he was fired,
00:19:59 but they're like, Hey, you can stick around and you can coach for the tournament. Then they just
00:20:02 won their conference tournament. So he's still their coach. And Dan Munson's a legend coach.
00:20:06 Like he, if you want to actually like draw the line of like, when did Gonzaga become Gonzaga?
00:20:12 It's Dan Munson. He was the coach of Gonzaga. He was assistant coach for a really long time.
00:20:16 Then their head coach, when they made their very first deep run where everyone was like,
00:20:19 what is this school? Where is it? Yeah. Um, yeah, him, they fired him and he was like, yeah,
00:20:24 I'll keep coaching him for this conference tournament. You're fired. He's like, okay,
00:20:27 can I still coach the team? Yeah. And they came back, they were down, I was watching that game.
00:20:30 They were down like 10 in the second half and came back and won that game. He said afterwards that,
00:20:35 uh, Jim Harbaugh is full of shit. When he says, who's got better than us? Nobody. He's like,
00:20:39 yeah, I do. I do. My life's pretty sweet. So like a guy who's fired being that happy about his life,
00:20:44 which I guess is still to coach basketball. Um, it's hard not to root for that guy. By the way,
00:20:48 if they, if they win, if they beat Arizona on the first round, is he coaching for his job?
00:20:52 Like could they rehire him? They should rehire him. Another one, Keats, NC state's coach,
00:20:58 all time, all time coaching for your job. He had a line in his contract that if he ever wins,
00:21:05 the ACC tournament in a contract year, he gets an automatic two year extension. So he got an
00:21:12 automatic two year extension on Saturday night just by winning that game. That's cool. And he
00:21:16 was, he was on the hot seat. Like they were going to fire him and he just, it kicks in and he just
00:21:20 got all these bonuses. All right. I'll give you one other team that I think could be the like
00:21:25 capture America's heart, Alabama, uh, Samford Samford's playing Kansas 13, four Kansas has been
00:21:34 trending downwards. They've had a lot of injuries. They got bounced quickly in the first round
00:21:38 against Cincy in the big 12 tournament. Samford plays so fast. They Chuck and like, that's the
00:21:45 type of team that everyone falls in love with. Just a bunch of like undersized guys who hit threes
00:21:51 and play at a crazy pace. So Samford could be that team. And Kansas is like, you always got to look,
00:21:56 what's the story. Even though Kansas is down, it's like 10 years from now, if Samford beat
00:22:01 Kansas, everyone be like, wow. Remember when Samford beat Kansas, Kansas, they lost to a school
00:22:06 named Samford. Yeah. Right. Uh, if you're looking at the Jake Marsh storyline, super bowl,
00:22:11 I see one in the second round, Tennessee, Texas, Rick Barnes. Yeah. I love that. I really wish the
00:22:18 committee had done Purdue versus St. Peter's in the first round. Yeah, me too. That would have
00:22:22 been great. But yeah, this, this bracket looks great. All right. So you guys want to do a quick
00:22:27 final four that we can then adjust at a later date. Yes. All right. Do you have yours Hank?
00:22:33 Okay. Give it to me. Yukon, Arizona, Kentucky Gonzaga, Yukon, Kentucky rematch for a mosaic 2014
00:22:45 Kentucky wins the national championship. Okay. Okay. I have Yukon, Arizona, Houston, Tennessee.
00:22:56 Okay. I have, this is my first glance. I haven't even done all, all throughout. I think it's going
00:23:02 to be the storyline revenge factor. It's going to be Yukon, North Carolina, Marquette and Creighton.
00:23:11 And everyone's gonna be like, why did you leave out half, you know, the entire big East three
00:23:16 out of four of the final four teams are big East team. Counterpoint. Do you know what network this
00:23:20 is going to be played on? Oh yes. CBS. And what network is the big East played Fox, Fox.
00:23:26 Something to think about. That's not going to happen. It would be very, yeah, it's actually
00:23:30 going to be, it actually was a state Colorado state. Yeah. It would be great if that did
00:23:34 happen. It would be a big fuck you. Yeah. I'm rooting for that. I think I would love to just
00:23:39 see the, I just like whenever the committee gets embarrassed, whether it be college football,
00:23:45 whether it be college basketball committees are bullshit. And I I'm convinced that all of these
00:23:51 committees can be the job of the committees can be done better by like 75% of the fans or AI.
00:23:59 Just anyone who's been paying attention. I know for a fact, I know college basketball guys who
00:24:05 are way more informed about college basketball and who's good and who's bad than this stupid
00:24:10 committee. Yeah. Committees exist just that one person doesn't get blamed for stuff. Yeah. And
00:24:14 then they pay some. It's like when somebody says, Oh, you know, I have to take this to the board
00:24:18 and get the board's approval on it. No, it's just the having a board or having a committee is very
00:24:23 useful. So you can be like, no, it's this nebulous entities problem that you've got fucked over.
00:24:28 There's, there's no one person that like a St. John's fan can call up on the phone and be like,
00:24:33 fuck you. That's all. That's all we want as fans. Like give me somebody to tell us to fuck off.
00:24:37 Yeah. Give us a hotline. Establish an open hotline to add. We should do that for voicemails. Maybe,
00:24:43 maybe for Wednesday's show. Oh yeah. What are we, what are we, what was that segment we used to do?
00:24:47 We should bring that back for March madness. Uh, was it like when your dad texts you?
00:24:53 Parental advisory. Parental advisory. Yeah. Pissed off parents. And then we had another
00:24:58 one where we used the hashtag that was good. Oh yeah. That people would tweet us. Higher education?
00:25:02 No, no, no. Some of the people tweet us that they were mad and we would read them off and they were
00:25:06 great. It might just be like mad online. Yeah. We got to bring that back. Cause that was great
00:25:10 to hear from the fans when they have like, they feel like they're hurt. Yeah. Yeah. So if you are,
00:25:14 if you were in a grieved party, if you feel like you've been wronged by the committee,
00:25:17 just tweet at us. Hashtag mad online. Yeah. Let us know why. Let us know what school they fucked over
00:25:23 and we will read the best ones. Yeah. Um, they, the end of the CBS show, they thank the committee,
00:25:29 shut the fuck up. It's a bunch of dudes sitting in women, probably sitting in,
00:25:35 in like business casual attire in a Sheridan conference room, eating like lukewarm spinach
00:25:42 artichoke dip and just sitting there being like, Oh, this team looks pretty good. Thank you for
00:25:47 your service. You spent six hours today and it's probably, I don't know if it's been art dip or if
00:25:52 it's like just cold cut sandwiches. It's just gross food. You had to eat dry sandwiches for a
00:25:56 day. You had to eat a Turkey club that didn't have almost any mayonnaise on it at all. Like a very
00:26:02 dry sandwich. Thank you for your service. You basically served overseas in Iraq. Yeah. You just,
00:26:06 you, you, you keep standing up and looking at the cookies again, being like, Oh, is this oatmeal
00:26:10 raisin? And then sitting back, I'll have half. And then you have another half. Then you have
00:26:13 another half. You've had seven cookies, dude. They probably put Duquesne at number 11. They
00:26:19 brought in the pitcher filled with water and like the metal vase. And it was probably filled to the
00:26:24 top too far. When you poured it into your little stemmed glass, it probably spilled a little bit
00:26:28 on the, on the white tablecloth that was housing all the craft services. So it was a tough day for
00:26:33 everybody. That fucking one idiot who's been accidentally drinking decaf for the whole day.
00:26:37 And he's like halfway through. He's like, fuck, this is decaf. Yeah. It probably took him like
00:26:41 10 minutes to get the PowerPoint set up. You didn't have the right connection cable.
00:26:45 They're morons. So no, no thank you to the committee. You guys did some bad jobs, bad jobs. I
00:26:51 actually am more like the bubble got burst by everyone. Like this was the craziest conference
00:26:57 tournament week. I'm more mad about the seating. I think they, they did some really bad shit with
00:27:01 the seating and fucked over some teams. Yeah. That's really what it comes in terms of the teams
00:27:06 that got left out. I think you just, you have to look at the ACC and then you look at the big East
00:27:11 teams that got left out and be like, which team like Clemson was what a six seed. Yeah, I think
00:27:16 so. Yeah. They stink. Yeah. Yeah. Clemson's 60 Joe Gerard's going to get absolutely eaten alive by
00:27:24 New Mexico. They play fast. Yeah. Also fastball. This is also a very funny time of year because
00:27:30 I'm very bad at gambling. I'm on a historically bad run right now, but I also think that I'm
00:27:35 smart enough to pick like Colorado to win a play in game and then pick Colorado to win their second
00:27:41 round game over Marquette. I already bet Colorado. Yeah. So I feel we're smart. We're sharp. Yeah,
00:27:46 no, it's fine. It's just, you gotta, you gotta get into it. So, um, what else we got for the bracket?
00:27:52 Anything else? Hank Duke, are you going to be a Duke fan? Yeah. I like how you just decided that
00:28:00 right now. Sure. I mean, I don't have a college basketball team, so they're the closest thing I
00:28:04 got. Duke went out sad. Yeah. I mean, this team's not good. Sad. Who do they lose to again?
00:28:10 NC state. Oh yeah. NC state. Yeah. There's I just, my brain is just melted with basketball.
00:28:16 He asked me, uh, asked me what happened and I'm just like, uh, I think, I don't know. Well,
00:28:20 Max, do you have any other thoughts? Villanova? Oh, how mad would you have been if, if Wisconsin
00:28:24 had lost at the refs? Oh, was Zach Eady? Yeah. Very mad. I mean, anyone who, what everyone who
00:28:31 roots for big 10 teams should be thankful that that was the last time we have to watch a big 10
00:28:35 ref crew ref Zach Eady. I still think Purdue is a very good team. They're better than they were
00:28:40 last year. Um, but it's just maddening watching a seven foot guy get treated like he's a five foot
00:28:48 guy and with kid gloves and every single time he gets touched, there's a whistle he's barreling
00:28:53 over people. It's nuts. So I was, that was, that felt really good. That was a very fun wind to have.
00:28:59 It is funny cause the refs feel bad for Zach Eady, right? Which is really strange for a guy
00:29:03 that that he's that physically imposing and you're like, Oh, poor Zach Eady. He doesn't look like
00:29:08 he's having any fun out there. They did it to Michigan state the night before too. It was just
00:29:12 egregious call after egregious call. I had one last thing, Max, you were never even close to the
00:29:18 bubble that you keep saying that that's not true. No, you kind of wasted her time. Yeah. Like you
00:29:23 wasted all that anger and you weren't even close to the, close to the, if Villanova beats Marquette
00:29:31 then beats Providence and is in the biggies final and loses to Yukon, they are a thousand percent in
00:29:36 that would be six quad one wins. I don't think so. A thousand percent. We know how the committee
00:29:42 feels about Italians, Max. And what network is the biggie stuff? It's true. Um, but, and the whole
00:29:48 quad one thing is bullshit. Like Michigan, that Michigan state got that seating cause of their
00:29:52 quad one wins. They have three of them. Yeah. Seton hall has more St. John's has more. Yeah.
00:29:57 I thought Michigan state should be in, but I just had five quad one wins. I know. And they beat
00:30:01 Yukon. Yeah. It's crazy. And, and Max, um, you were never close to close. Providence wasn't
00:30:08 close. What was Providence even the last four out? They last four out. No, they were not last
00:30:13 four. They weren't last four out. And they went around further than you in the biggies tournament.
00:30:18 But we were ahead. We already beat them twice. We were ahead of them going into the biggies
00:30:22 tournament. So last four hours, Oklahoma, Seton hall, Indiana state and pit. You were not even
00:30:26 we, you wasted our time, but if they beat Marquette and then beat Providence to get to the
00:30:30 biggies final, there are a thousand percent in. Yeah. I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't
00:30:36 know why you say that. I don't think so. Cause you weren't even close. Did you call him Frank?
00:30:40 You weren't even close, but you're yes. You're saying that because they lost that gets them to
00:30:45 that would've got them to 20 wins with six quad one games. Actually, I don't know if Providence
00:30:51 would have been quad one justice for pug justice for pug. Oh yeah. So we should say that is another
00:30:59 Fleming curse. Uh, a crazy stat. John Fanta put this out there for the first time in 45 year
00:31:05 history, the biggies conference, a team went over five games over 500 in conference play and did
00:31:11 not make the NCAA tournament. That team is Seton hall. Damn. That's tough. That is tough. That is
00:31:18 very tough. It's just a bubble. The bubble went crazy. It was all those teams just stealing bits.
00:31:24 I mean the eight 10 had every single team being upset. So, uh, but yeah, we have a bracket and
00:31:30 I'm very excited about the bracket. I love my bracket. My bracket's perfect and it's a hundred
00:31:34 percent correct and nothing ever bad is going to happen to it. Who do you think produce going to
00:31:39 lose to? I think they lose a TCU Sanford. He's Sanford's in the elite eight. I think that, I think
00:31:47 I just, I picked some of these teams cause I want to see these storylines develop. Like I want to
00:31:52 see will Wade win two games. I want to see McNeese beat Kansas. Uh, Sanford also the, everyone needs
00:32:00 to know that you have to fill out your bracket. You have to have a really strong conviction about
00:32:03 one crazy upset and then have that team lose by 30. Yeah. And then your entire brackets got,
00:32:08 you guys are highlighter guys, right? Um, I go back and forth depending on the year.
00:32:13 Highlighter. I don't have, I don't have like a device that I need to use every single year. I
00:32:17 go with the flow. Oh, highlighter for sure. Right, Hank? Yeah. Oh, always highlighter. Right, right
00:32:22 Max circle. You circle circle and then you fucking weirdo and then put a line through it. You gotta
00:32:30 be, yeah, you gotta be able to do both. Yeah. If I have a highlighter for me, I'm a highlighter guy.
00:32:34 If I got a pen, guess what? It's big time. I want it to be as quick as possible and I don't always
00:32:38 have a highlighter close by. I will always have a pen. Yep. Yeah. All right. Well we'll get more
00:32:43 into the bracket with John Rothstein and we also are going to have Titus on on Wednesday where we
00:32:46 dive really deep in, have more crystallized thoughts. Uh, let's do who's back the week.
00:32:51 By the way, I mentioned at the top, we are going to talk Justin Fields after John Rothstein. Got
00:32:57 a lot of thoughts on that. He was traded, so we're not ignoring it. Uh, who's back the week brought
00:33:02 to you by our friends at game time. Game time. PFT is going to use game time on Friday night to go

00:34:10 who's back of the week? Who's back of the week is black dick. Oh, okay. Good. Good. Uh, Grady,
00:34:17 Grady Dick and Anthony black did a Jersey swap at the end of their game on Sunday. That's pretty
00:34:22 cool. It's like when, when Chris, very funny. When Chris, very funny picture used to always
00:34:26 stay next to Fletcher Cox. So it would say long Cox. And then one time Jalen hurts got there and
00:34:30 said long Cox hurts. That was awesome. Yeah. Just guy stuff. Yeah. Always makes me laugh. Nothing
00:34:35 like a good Jersey swap. Um, I lose back to Scottie Sheffler. This guy is good. He's a problem. He is
00:34:43 a big problem. Another comeback victory at the players. Repeat champion at the players. Fifth
00:34:47 major. Fifth major. Windham Clark, uh, had a putt to tie force a playoff when inside the cup,
00:34:56 rolled around, pop back out. Did a 180 degree loop came out. I may have bet on winning when
00:35:01 I'm Clark to win. That was a tough loss. That was crazy. It was wild. Yeah. It was really close
00:35:06 going down the stretch there. It was like Brian Harmon, Shoffley is Shoffley ever going to win
00:35:11 anything. He just doesn't like to win Zander. The only thing Xander does, I, his name is always at
00:35:17 the top of the leaderboard on Saturday. It's always right next to Patrick Cantlay. It's always
00:35:21 like, can't lay Shoffley. I think he's like, Oh, for nine. And he's been in the final group nine
00:35:25 times and he's maybe it's over his last night. Cause he's won a couple of times, but can't break
00:35:30 through. Can't break through tough. What about a Xander? Is it where you're a kid and your name is
00:35:34 Alexander and you decided to go by Xander instead of Alex. I think some kids are named Xander.
00:35:39 Yeah. Xander Xander is Jimmy, Jimmy Tatro in his show. I don't think his name is Alexander. That
00:35:44 would be why you think his name is just Xander. Yeah. I think it might be Xander. I think people
00:35:48 do Xander now. I mean, people do all kinds of names. Alexander. Of course it's Alex. Oh, that's
00:35:53 what Xander's short for. I didn't know. I didn't know that you thought just Xander was a name. I
00:35:57 think people do name. Yeah. Why don't you just go Alex? Yeah. Alex, that's what I'm saying. You
00:36:01 should, if your name is Alexander and you choose to go by Xander, that tells me all you need to
00:36:05 know. He should go by Alex till he wins the tournament. Yeah. One tournament. No, but it
00:36:10 wins one since he's been choking. Does he choke? You could call it today a choke. Also Max Homa did
00:36:17 not hit a person. He hit a tree. Yeah. He was very clear about that on the record. Although I wish he
00:36:22 had hit the person. Yeah. I wish because the person was standing right in front of him when
00:36:25 he was trying to hit a shot and that's, that's Darwinism. He said afterwards, he's like, yeah,
00:36:29 I asked him to move and then they just kept on inching closer. The post-match press conference
00:36:33 with Max was so funny because they asked him about that situation and he had this like smile on his
00:36:39 face and he kept holding himself back. And if I'm running it through the Max Homa truth translator,
00:36:44 he wanted to say so badly, like I wish that it hit the guy. Like it's his fault for being there.
00:36:48 Yes. He should not have been there. That's his problem. Not my problem. You should ask him about
00:36:52 that. Yeah. Um, but the video made it look like it just whopped him in the head. And I was, I was
00:36:57 hoping that he got hit in the head, but you know, not bad enough to cause a serious injury. Just
00:37:00 enough to teach him a lesson. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. Uh, so Max did not hit a person.
00:37:06 I thought he killed the guy. Yeah. I mean, there's, there's no way that hits him in the head.
00:37:10 It doesn't seriously injure him. Yeah. There's a part like it hits the thing and then you hear
00:37:14 somebody scream like half a second later. Yeah. That would have been, I kind of wish that it
00:37:18 happened for me. Okay. PFT or who's back? Um, my who's back of the week is the Titanic. Oh,
00:37:26 so I think we pitched this on the show to, um, uh, Damon John. Okay. From Shark Tank like five
00:37:34 years ago, but it's been my dream to one day recreate the Titanic. And by that, I mean build
00:37:40 the exact same ship again, have it leave from the same port on the same day of the year, have it
00:37:46 sail the exact same route as the original Titanic and have the exact same number of lifeboats on it.
00:37:51 Have tickets cost the same that they did back in the day. The three richest guys in the world on
00:37:54 there. Yeah. Adjusted for inflation and then just see if you can make it. I guarantee you that would
00:38:00 sell out people like thrill seekers out there. There's a bunch of Titanic freaks out there. We
00:38:04 saw it with the sub that imploded. Yup. Like people get legit obsessed with the Titanic. I
00:38:08 would love to have it be like, like stowage class where it costs like $5 for a ticket. You sell a
00:38:13 thousand of those. And then you have like other like suites up top that costs $250,000 where rich
00:38:19 people get to go in, just recreate it a hundred percent. But there's a, uh, there's an Australian
00:38:24 billionaire named Clive Palmer, and he is planning on building the exact replica of the Titanic.
00:38:31 And he wants to set sail in 2027. I hope he does it at the same time of year. Do it. Just run the
00:38:37 whole thing back. See what can happen. Well, there's no, there's no ice caps anymore, right?
00:38:41 Maybe, maybe by then we fucked up that, that, uh, iceberg. Yeah, we did. That iceberg is not
00:38:47 existent. Global warming, uh, Titanic kind of, kind of a little bit of a bitch made boat.
00:38:53 When you think about obviously because it got destroyed, but have you ever seen the pictures
00:38:58 of the Titanic versus like a modern day cruise? It's not as big as that shit is a fucking joke.
00:39:03 Basil's probably has a boat. Yeah, definitely. Titanic was mid at best. Yeah. So they should
00:39:09 make this a bigger boat. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Like if you remake the Titanic,
00:39:14 everyone's going to look at it and be like, that's it. Cause in our heads, we're like biggest boat
00:39:18 ever for that, for that one day, like on the same day of the journey that the Titanic hit the
00:39:23 iceberg, they should just have the captain blindfolded. Yeah. It's like, we're going
00:39:27 straight ahead. Yeah. And just, can you imagine what a thrill that would be to be on that boat?
00:39:30 I want this thing to sink so bad. It would rock. Especially a billionaire named Clive.
00:39:34 It would rock so hard if it sank. I'm rooting for it to sink. He might be building this just
00:39:38 to blow it up and be like, it sunk. Yeah. This might be a Michael Bay movie. Yeah. Uh, okay.
00:39:43 My who's back week. I have two. One is, um, I should've said this during the brackets, but
00:39:48 this is the funniest time of the year in terms of non-sports fans or sports fans. Because I think
00:39:54 in NFL season, if you aren't a football fan, I think most non-football fans, at least respect
00:40:00 that. Like we know that's big. Like we know the NFL is big. The NFL is King. There are people
00:40:04 who just like, we'll never watch a college basketball game just out of principle. And I
00:40:08 saw this one guy tweet, you're a sick individual. If you've been watching college bash basketball
00:40:12 all week, it's like, no, this is the best, but it's always a funny divide because you have people
00:40:18 who like, obviously not listeners to this show, but you have people who are just like, this is
00:40:22 just another week for them while we are just going to go to war. Yeah. Yeah. I love it. Yeah,
00:40:27 it is. It's, it's really strange. Um, but you know what I mean? I get it. I get into whatever
00:40:32 big sport is happening at that time. That's how my calendar is. Right. Of course. But you know
00:40:36 what I mean? Like when you meet someone who doesn't watch the NFL, they're like, Oh yeah,
00:40:39 well I know I will. I watched super bowl. Yeah. And Rothstein, but I meet people who don't watch
00:40:43 college basketball. They're like, what is going on? But I feel like during bracket week, yeah.
00:40:48 That kind of transcends office. Yeah, you're right. You're right. The office was going on,
00:40:51 but conference championship week, you're right. There's a lot of people out there that like
00:40:54 March, like college basketball does not start until the bright. It's more about
00:40:58 conference championship week. They don't understand like, wait, you've been watching
00:41:01 basketball every day for the last five days. It's the exact opposite of Joe Linardi schedule.
00:41:06 All right. So that, that was my segue. Cause my other, who's back is Joe Linardi. Who's now
00:41:09 no longer back. Cause it's golf season. Joe Linardi. I thought I liked this guy. Have we
00:41:14 had him on? I don't think so. I think, you know what he reached out to us maybe, maybe year two
00:41:20 of part of my take. And I think we were going to put him on the show, but he was like, the thing
00:41:24 is I'm actually like swamped until the third week of March. So I can come on the third week of March.
00:41:29 And then we were like, wait a second. What the fuck are we going to talk to Joe Linardi about
00:41:32 during the NCAA tournament? Right. Like his job is done by then. He doesn't even, he doesn't even,
00:41:39 I don't think he watches the NCAA tournament. He was also getting community noted because he was
00:41:43 putting in like wins. He had Virginia winning against NC state. They didn't. Yeah. In Illinois
00:41:48 losing to Nebraska. They didn't. But Joe Linardi on Friday night after making Virginia, the winner
00:41:55 tweeted danger time for UVA and good night for me. Joe Linardi has to work three weeks a year.
00:42:02 And he said good night at 10 57 during conference championship week on Friday night when there was
00:42:08 like six games left. What is up with this guy? I think, I think he hates brackets. Yeah. Because
00:42:13 he also said, I think Joe Linardi is trapped in his own personal hell. Like the one thing that he
00:42:19 has to do all day, every day he hates doing, which is watching college basketball. Right.
00:42:22 And he was the first to do it and everyone respects him and ESPN employs them. But like
00:42:26 a million people do brackets now shout out bracket matrix that compiles it all. He had,
00:42:31 you know, a couple hours before, uh, the brackets came out, he said two hours, actually two days
00:42:36 until golf season. He's just so excited to be done with this stuff. And then he also said,
00:42:41 uh, this is grumpy time for him right now. It was like right before the brackets come out,
00:42:46 he's as grumpy as it gets. What is up with this guy? Does he not, bro, you got to love what you
00:42:52 do. Yeah. It's like if, if Hank's job was to read all the time, that's what he's treating this.
00:42:57 Like I was shocked. And he, he might not even watch the games this week. I don't know. His job
00:43:02 is done. Like Joe, Joe Linardi is usefulness runs out at exactly this time. Every single
00:43:08 day. It's over. And Max was here on Friday night. We were just like, what do you mean? Good night.
00:43:13 I was furious. What do you mean? Good night. Your job is to, to, to watch the games and decide the
00:43:18 bracket for us. You are going to sleep. We had Max when he tweeted that, I think you and I both
00:43:24 stayed up for another five hours. Yeah. I mean, the Arlington game was unbelievable. It went
00:43:28 forever and it was incredible. Yeah. New Mexico and Colorado hadn't even tipped off yet. And they
00:43:33 were both bubble teams. Good night. How are you supposed to make a judgment on who should be in
00:43:37 and who should be out? If you won't even watch the games on, on championship week. Careful, Max,
00:43:42 careful, Max. He's an Italian. You don't want to come across like a CBS. We were just screaming.
00:43:48 What do you mean? Good night. You can't go to sleep. This is your job. It's five days a year
00:43:54 that he has to stay up that late. Yeah. What he needs to realize is that with one snap of the
00:43:59 fingers, that freak Steve Kornacki could step into his job and do it better. I've always been
00:44:03 a Jerry Palm guy myself. That fucking PC has on his head just rocks. It just goes out there with
00:44:08 authority. You're like, dude, what are you wearing? I like Charlie cream. I'm on the cream team. Okay.
00:44:12 Yeah. Yeah. So let's, let's normalize other guys. Yeah. I think so. I was thinking about the
00:44:17 upcoming college football season. I think Blake, his line is going to be, he's going to be a
00:44:22 bracketologist for football because nobody's doing that yet. Yeah. It's going to be the first. Yeah.
00:44:28 As long as the Lunarti is not doing it now, he hates his job. Good night. You don't fucking
00:44:34 say good night to us at 10 57 on Friday night of conference championship week. What do you mean?
00:44:39 Good night. Yeah. Well it was, it was midnight on the East coast. This was after he had put
00:44:45 Virginia as a win. Yeah. That's tough. Tough night for real tough. Uh, okay. Jake is still
00:44:50 taping with Titus. We can ask him his who's back when he gets back here. Uh, let's get to John
00:44:55 Rothstein. Talk a little more college basketball. Also got to talk some tweets with John Ross

00:46:47 sponsor. Okay, here he is, John Rothstein. Okay, we now welcome on a very, very special guest,
00:46:54 recurring guest. It is John Rothstein. You can find him on CBS sports. You can hear his podcast,
00:47:00 College Hoops Today. It is a tradition unlike any other. We have John Rothstein to break down
00:47:06 his regions talk brackets, but before we do that, John, how are you feeling after Shaka Smart just
00:47:12 outed you for being a serial texter to him on national television for people who missed?
00:47:18 John asked him about Tyler Kolick and whether he'd be playing and Shaka said,
00:47:24 should I answer this now or should I wait till you text me every single morning? How are you feeling?
00:47:29 You know, hey, look, I hope that Kat, everybody who meets me, and I think probably most people
00:47:34 feel this. I feel I'm one of the most relentless people that they've met in the history of their
00:47:38 life. Look, nothing was given to me. Nothing obviously was put in front of me and said,
00:47:42 okay, take this. This is yours. So the only way I know how to live life is to go through every
00:47:47 life each and every day. Like I've accomplished nothing. And the way in life to accomplish
00:47:52 everything is to wake up each and every day believing that you accomplished nothing.
00:47:55 Oh, every day is a gift. Wait, so every person told me that.
00:47:59 Wait, so every day you wake up and you're like, I have not texted Shaka Smart ever in my life.
00:48:04 Essentially. No, I was following up with him this past week, obviously about Kolik's
00:48:10 injury news. And we spoke before the big East tournament. He said, there's no news right now.
00:48:14 I'll let you know if that changes and so on and so forth. But I can never go through life feeling
00:48:22 like I could have done more in my vocation and in my effort. So what I mean by that is, you know,
00:48:28 I believe it was at Salvador Dali who said, have no fear of protraction. You'll never reach
00:48:33 it. We're getting deep and philosophical here on the first question, but why not? We're close.
00:48:37 Yeah, I like that. I think the way you have to look at it is I could never live with myself
00:48:42 without like, well, I could have done X, Y, or Z to be better. And I didn't do that.
00:48:46 So now I look at things and I say, you know what? I have to always make sure that I'm stretching
00:48:52 things out as much as I can, giving my best effort. And if the chips don't fall in your favor,
00:48:56 the chips don't fall in your favor. You're never going to be able to be on top of everything,
00:48:59 but you can never not give your best effort in life. As you know, from one of our favorite
00:49:03 movies that we share together, one of most Celeste Stallone's most underrated movies,
00:49:07 Over the Top, the world meets nobody halfway. Yes.
00:49:10 And you live that. You live that mantra. And sometimes to your personal life's detriment,
00:49:16 because I was made aware of this tweet of yours a couple hours ago. I wanted to follow up,
00:49:21 make sure that you're doing okay personally, because I believe this was Friday you tweeted,
00:49:25 problems at home. Yeah. Been so dialed in that my wife took our six month old girl with her to a
00:49:30 work trip on the West Coast. I hope they come back. But if they don't, dying on your sword
00:49:36 is worth it when Yukon St. John's is 24 hours away at MSG. Remember, life is about choices.
00:49:41 So are you single? Is this the like, look out ladies, John Rothstein, ready to get back at it?
00:49:47 No, but the truth of the matter is this, my wife, I've got a really busy stretch. As you guys know,
00:49:52 I was doing TV tonight. I had to do my own podcast. I'm on with you guys. I have more TV
00:49:56 in the morning. Then I'm flying out to Dayton for the first four. And then I'm going to another
00:50:00 site from there. But she was like, all right, I get it that this is March. Every month is March
00:50:05 for me because I have a job too. And I have my own career. And she's like, you know what? I'm
00:50:08 putting the baby to sleep and I'm sleeping in a different room tonight because I don't want to
00:50:11 hear about these brackets. I'll watch the game socially, but that's it. And I go, that's fine.
00:50:15 So March season drives a rift, I think, in the house a little bit. People don't understand that
00:50:22 it's a really big deal that Duquesne hasn't been to the tournament since 77, which is the same year
00:50:26 that Star Wars first did theaters. But I have learned this, and you guys tell me if I'm wrong.
00:50:30 Nobody is perfect, not even my wife, who I love to pieces. But at the end of the day,
00:50:36 you are who you are in life. And at this point, you guys know me well enough. I'm not changing.
00:50:41 So if I, for years, have felt that the most underrated rivalry was St. John's Yukon,
00:50:47 and it was untapped because St. John's, who didn't make the NCAA tournament,
00:50:51 hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since 2000, when Mike Jarvis led St. John's over Northern
00:50:57 Arizona and Tucson, when Northern Arizona had a very dangerous center named Dan McClintock.
00:51:01 I am not going to back down on the fact that I was still waiting to see if St. John's could get
00:51:06 the Friday night, the Big East tournament to play Yukon, who again has become a team that is
00:51:12 operating on a Calhoun level under Dan Hurley. Yes. No. Hey, listen, we have busy seasons,
00:51:19 football season. We have a lot of stuff that pulls us in different directions. So we understand.
00:51:23 I wanted to follow up on one other. We had your back on the other tweet, where you said you lost
00:51:28 a friend because you didn't go to their engagement party. I don't know if you heard what we said on
00:51:32 our show, but we said engagement parties are bullshit. A guy should never be like,
00:51:38 "I can't believe you didn't come to my engagement party." That's point John Rothstein. You made the
00:51:42 right choice. But also, and you guys know this, when you do what we do, you don't say no to
00:51:49 work. You don't say no when you have opportunities, because especially, and you guys know this,
00:51:54 when you're starting out, if you say no, you may never get another opportunity.
00:51:58 This guy who, again, was a pseudo friend, I would say, when I went to college,
00:52:02 he was friendly, like, "Hey, do you want to go to a Knick game or whatever?" Kind of friendly.
00:52:07 But then when I started having more opportunities in my career, he's like, "Hey, my brother really
00:52:11 wants to get in a talk radio. Can we come by and see the station?" And it's like a friend of
00:52:15 convenience. And you get invited to the wedding, and you're happy that your pseudo friend is having
00:52:19 success. But you're not going to say, "No, I'm going to come to your engagement party," instead
00:52:24 of going to a Final Four when Butler was playing VCU and UConn was playing Kentucky, and Shabazz
00:52:29 Napier and Jeremy Lamb were freshmen at UConn. Right. And that friend's name? Jonathan Bosco.
00:52:34 Yeah. Look where it ended up. Who's Jonathan Bosco?
00:52:38 You can put it together with a last name. Okay. Fair enough. That's all you,
00:52:42 BFB. I'm not going down that rabbit hole. Yeah. We had your back. All right. So,
00:52:46 let's get into it. Let's dive into it. I know you always like to put names on the bracket,
00:52:52 on the region. So, we're just going to hand it to you. You drive. We'll insert ourselves here and
00:52:58 there with questions, but let's rip it off. All right. Well, let's start now in the top
00:53:03 left right now, which is the East region. UConn is the one seed. And I look at the makeup of the
00:53:09 coaches in this region as having such fiery personalities. Dan Hurley's your one seed.
00:53:15 TJ Altshulberg is the two. He looks like he could step in an octagon and fight Ken Shamrock right
00:53:19 now. Brad Underwood at three is a coach who keeps a treadmill in the gym at practice. And if a coach
00:53:26 and the players aren't playing well, he makes sure they get on and obviously hits the treadmill.
00:53:30 Duquesne is Pittsburgh tough at 11. Auburn, one of the toughest teams in the country. One of the
00:53:35 hardest playing players in the country. And KD Johnson. San Diego State is also a very hard
00:53:41 playing time for a hard playing team at the five seed. I see ruthless, hard nosed competitive teams
00:53:48 in this region. And I see the region of Gladiators led by the coach of the one seed, in my opinion,
00:53:54 the favorite in the NCAA tournament, Dan Hurley. And Dan Hurley probably in his own mind feels like
00:54:00 he's a little bit like Russell Crowe and Gladiator in this NCAA tournament. Brother to a famous point
00:54:06 guard, son of a famous father. And even though he won a national championship last year, he will
00:54:11 have his vengeance in this tournament of the next. Okay. I like that. I like that. The Gladiator
00:54:16 region. So, um, can you tell us what just missed for this region because, or how quickly do you
00:54:23 come up with the names and was there anything you were workshopping? Cause I'd love to see the
00:54:27 drafts. I'd love to see what was like, ah, this was so close, but you know, Iowa state doesn't
00:54:34 really fit this or BYU doesn't really make sense here. So was there, was there a name that you were
00:54:39 toying with before that you came up with? Well, I was looking up and down, obviously
00:54:44 this region. And I was just saying, Oh my God, like, you know, Iowa state is so tough and Dan
00:54:51 Hurley's such a personality. And, you know, we have Bruce Perl, who's such a personality and so
00:54:55 fiery. And then you have obviously, you know, the Brad Underwood stuff, he's such a personality and
00:55:00 you Kane and Pittsburgh and it's such a story for them to get there for the first time since 77.
00:55:05 I almost went with the region of chutzpah. Ooh. Okay. I like it. I need the, I know I need whatever
00:55:11 cut, you know, is on the drawing or the, in the drafts for each one of these regions. I like that.
00:55:16 So it was almost the region of chutzpah, but I went with the region of gladiators because I think
00:55:20 you have the Dan Hurley element of, again, even though he won a national title brother to a famous
00:55:25 point guard, son of a famous coach. And even though he won a national title, he will seek
00:55:29 his vengeance in this tournament or the next. Yeah. I also think in your flow chart, it,
00:55:32 it really helps if it can line up with a movie that would fit right in at like 2:00 PM on a
00:55:37 Saturday afternoon has a bearing on TNT, right? Came out at least 20 years or more. Yes.
00:55:42 Right. Gladiator came out in 2000. Yeah. That's 20 years or more. That's right. Yeah.
00:55:47 Uh, all right. Who do you have coming out of this region?
00:55:49 I've got Yukon guys. I mean, Yukon is going to be playing and I've been talking about this for
00:55:56 weeks in situations where Yukon is not going to have to get on a plane to go to a final four
00:56:04 stores to Brooklyn, win two games there, back the stores, win two games in Boston.
00:56:09 But I will say this, if Auburn can find its way to Boston, they're in the sweet 16. I think Yukon
00:56:17 against Auburn in that sweet 16 in Boston has a chance to be one of the best games of the entire
00:56:23 tournament. I don't know if you remember this cat or PFC, they played a couple of years ago in the
00:56:27 first round of the battle for Atlantis. And it was one of the best games that we had that season.
00:56:32 That's that cat. I think it was Thanksgiving. It was, I was at the park in Brooklyn with my kid.
00:56:37 I think I, I think I had two kids. I was with my son and it was like what, two overtimes.
00:56:43 And I had a lot of money on that game. Was it two overtimes?
00:56:46 That was, I think two overtimes. Yes. It was definitely.
00:56:51 I remember it well. That was a great game. So there's a lot of conference champions
00:56:55 in this bracket. Do you, do you put any stock into them fading out of the tournament?
00:56:58 There's two sides to that. You know, I mean, we look at what happened obviously with Purdue
00:57:03 in the past, we've seen it work both ways. It's obviously great momentum for some teams. Yukon in
00:57:08 2011 won five in five days with Kemba Walker and then won six games in the NCAA tournament.
00:57:14 I think there's some of that. I also think that, you know, you look at the bottom of this region,
00:57:21 you've got the, I think, you know, the two, three seed is massive. I mean, Iowa state on Sunday,
00:57:27 I had forecasted as my fourth, number one seed in Illinois as a team that I felt for about a
00:57:31 month could be a dark horse final four team. So I'm looking at the scenario at the bottom of that
00:57:36 region as being a dynamite, dynamite region here. So who did you have dropping out? If you had Iowa
00:57:41 state as number one seed? I had North Carolina dropping out.
00:57:44 Huh. Okay. Okay. I saw a lot of people online said that I'm not saying this, but I saw a lot
00:57:49 of people online saying that you were a moron for that. Would you like to defend yourself against
00:57:53 those people? I don't look at my mentions. I haven't looked at my mentions since 2017.
00:57:57 That's smart. That's smart. What about the people that say Duquesne was a lazily seated because it
00:58:04 seems like the committee basically said whoever wins VCU Duquesne, who the 11th seed VCU would
00:58:11 make more sense as 11 seed. Oh shit. We already filled out our whole bracket. We'll just put it
00:58:15 in Duquesne when they clearly are the weakest of the 11 seeds, resume wise. And actually a lot of
00:58:22 12 seeds are at better resumes. Well, look at this right now for a sec, guys, the 11 seeds, Duquesne
00:58:28 bid, steal out of the eight 10 New Mexico. We learned later was a bid, steal out of the mountain
00:58:33 West. I thought New Mexico should have been in regardless. NC state bid, steal her out of the
00:58:38 ACC and Oregon, the 11th seed in the Midwest bottom right was a bid, steal her. So it's almost
00:58:45 feels like the 11 seat slots all just went to the bid, stealers. Yeah. Yeah. Interesting. That
00:58:51 might be what happened. Okay. So, um, well, if you haven't, if you haven't read your notifications
00:58:56 or your mentions in 2017, did you ever think that maybe there's like a young John Rothstein out
00:59:01 there that wakes up every day and tweets at you and it's trying to interact with you in the same
00:59:06 way you're dealing with coaches and they're just pounding their head against the wall. They're
00:59:09 just trying to make a name for themselves. John, I have any, I have an email. He can reach out to
00:59:13 you guys or Hank or Jake and you know, I'll get in touch with them. Okay. All right. Okay. Um,
00:59:16 anything, you know, help to help, you know, younger people achieve their passion. Like
00:59:20 we've been fortunate enough to do. Okay. So any upsets coming out of this in the, uh, in the first
00:59:23 two rounds, I've got Duquesne beating BYU. So that's a little bit of an upset and it's not an
00:59:31 upset I'm going to take here, but I, I mean in terms of the seed, but I think considering how
00:59:36 poorly Florida Atlantic played losing the temple, I think a lot of people are going to, you know,
00:59:40 fade Florida Atlantic. I think Northwestern, you guys know, this being in Chicago is severely,
00:59:46 severely limited after losing Ty Berry to a season ending injury. And that Northwestern has also,
00:59:52 you know, been without Matthew Nicholson, who has been a stalwart inside for them during this
00:59:57 two year run. He has been out for a number of, uh, a number of games. I'm going to take Florida
01:00:03 Atlantic to beat Northwestern. I talked obviously for a long time about Auburn. Cause I love Auburn.
01:00:10 And I don't really love the matchup for Yale, but James Jones has a good ball club
01:00:14 at Yale. I think Auburn is too deep for that. But my upset in this region is Duquesne
01:00:19 beating BYU in an 11 six. I think we have to remember this and you guys get this.
01:00:24 BYU for the most part was a team that it was recruited to play in the West coast conference.
01:00:30 And now you have a team in Duquesne who just won the Atlantic 10. There is not the conference gap
01:00:35 that there probably would be in your normal six 11 when you have a bid stealer. So I'm taking
01:00:41 Duquesne right there, but I've got Yukon, Auburn, Illinois, Iowa state in my sweet 16,
01:00:46 the region of gladiators. And I've got Yukon over Illinois in the elite eight.
01:00:50 Okay. Okay. All right. Next region, wherever you want to go.
01:00:54 Bottom left. We'll stay on the left side of the bracket,
01:00:58 the West region, which has played in Los Angeles. And because it's played in Los Angeles,
01:01:04 it should fittingly be called the region of drama. Now, why is it the region of drama? Well,
01:01:10 let's look right now who the one seed is North Carolina, obviously two years ago,
01:01:16 played for a national championship, lost the Kansas had the dramatic
01:01:20 season last year where it missed the NCAA tournament. Now it has done a complete one 80,
01:01:26 but who is the two seed Arizona. And that means if the seeds hold in Southern California,
01:01:32 and it's a one, two, we would have Caleb love going up against his former team for the right
01:01:40 to go to the final four. That is the region of drama. Now you look at the other characteristics
01:01:45 of this region. You've got drama with New Mexico, a team that had to play well at the mountain West
01:01:52 tournament after losing the air force in obviously a very, very brutal loss. A couple of weeks ago,
01:01:58 you also have drama with St. Mary's Randy Bennett's club starts eight and six. Then it goes,
01:02:04 he wrote the WCC like a chainsaw through butter. It gets a five seat. It wins the WCC regular season
01:02:10 and also tournament titles. St. Mary's has not been to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament
01:02:15 since 2010 with Omar Sam hand, Mickey McConnell, Matthew Della Vadova, when they beat Richmond and
01:02:21 Villanova back to back in Providence. And then you got Tom Izzo in this region as well, who again,
01:02:26 is always, you know, a great quote, always opinionated. He's a very dramatic guy, but the
01:02:31 big headline for the region of drama is the potential North Carolina, Arizona Caleb love
01:02:38 against the Tar Heels matchup in the elite eight in the West region. Therefore the region of drama.
01:02:43 Okay. How much longer do you think is, so it's going to stick around?
01:02:46 Oh, I don't see him not coaching. I don't think Tom Izzo could not coach.
01:02:51 He almost, I think is on some ways enjoys the adversity more than the actual success
01:02:57 because the adversity then it forces you to have the truly brutal practice the next day and
01:03:02 getting back the respectability. So what missed the cut in this region?
01:03:07 What were we thinking about when we saw it? As soon as I saw that it was being played in Los
01:03:12 Angeles. And as soon as I saw there was a chance that Arizona could play North Carolina in the
01:03:17 elite eight, I said, hands down, this is the region of drama. There's nothing else to talk
01:03:21 about. It's so dramatic. And again, life is not obviously a movie, but this would feel like a
01:03:26 movie. If we have Caleb love against North Carolina going up against RJ Davis and Baycott
01:03:32 guys, he went to the national championship game with two years ago.
01:03:35 Yeah. So hold on that. That feels like kind of like the selection committee screwed up by just
01:03:40 like, Oh, we'll just put Duquesne in at the 11th seed. When you found out that it was going to be
01:03:44 LA. What, like when did they announce the sites like a year ago? Was that always going to be the
01:03:49 drama in LA? Yeah, no, but, but the matchup, the matchup, you know, I want to just make sure,
01:03:55 I want to make sure you're not, you know, we're not like you could maybe tell us what the regions
01:04:00 are next year based on where they're being played. I'm not there yet. I'm thinking of one day,
01:04:04 one year at a time. So if we're looking at this like a movie, who's the good guy though?
01:04:08 Is Caleb love the good guy or is it his teammates? And then Caleb love walks out the door on him.
01:04:14 Caleb love is, I think has gotten a bad rap. I think Caleb love is perceived to be the bad guy,
01:04:18 but he's not, I went to Arizona and you know, spend some time with him. The preseason
01:04:22 wonderful guys had a great year, you know, packed 12 player of the year played like an all American.
01:04:27 I just think that it would be compelling, compelling theater. If that's the case. I mean,
01:04:32 look, both of these teams got to go through really good teams to get to that point. I'll say this
01:04:36 guys I'm looking at North Carolina and now the game will be played in Charlotte, but whoever
01:04:41 North Carolina gets Mississippi state or Michigan state in that round of 32 game, that is a bear of
01:04:50 a game to get to the sweet 16. Now I think America is going to be taking Michigan state in this game
01:04:57 because of Tom Izzo. That's what people from the periphery do. I am going with Mississippi state.
01:05:02 I am going with Chris Jan's, the dentist who will give you a root canal without the Nova cane.
01:05:07 When he gets the chance guys, let's look at Chris Jan's here in the NCAA tournament,
01:05:11 New Mexico state. He beat Yukon two years ago. Last year, got Mississippi state to the NCAA
01:05:16 tournament lost on the last possession in the first board of pit. Now he's back the dentist
01:05:20 doing work at that's like very good dentist though. It sounds like just a torturer. Yeah,
01:05:27 I like it. All right. Let's pull it. I mean, really good defensive coach. Yeah. Although
01:05:31 their defense hasn't been as good as it was last year. Fair enough. Fair enough. I guess, you know,
01:05:36 he took, took some tweaks out, but again, a little bit better offensively, the guy you want to keep an
01:05:40 eye on for Mississippi state, a guy who I think could be a real star as again, people who are
01:05:45 coming from the periphery is Josh Hubbard, five, 10 freshmen from Mississippi state. Believe he
01:05:51 scored over 4,000 points in high school. Ooh. Okay. All right. Where are we going next?
01:05:56 Let's go to the top, right? The South region, the region of firepower. And I'm looking at this
01:06:05 region and I'm seeing elite perimeters and elite scoring power Houston, obviously didn't play well
01:06:11 against Iowa state in the big 12 tournament title game, tremendous four guard sets, tremendous guard
01:06:16 play, tremendous firepower. You know about Nebraska with Fred Hoiberg. We love Kasey
01:06:20 Tominaga. Another player I think could captivate the country in spurts with his ability to shoot.
01:06:26 Nebraska, by the way, has never won an NCAA tournament game. So that's on the line for
01:06:30 them. They go against Texas A&M who has that dynamite backboard for buzz Williams with Wade
01:06:36 Taylor, the fourth and Tyrese Radford, and they can really, really score. That's a dynamite first
01:06:40 round game. And guys, I'm going to be at that game, you know, doing sidelines in Memphis.
01:06:44 We got then Wisconsin, the best offensive team of the gray guard era with AJ store against James
01:06:52 Madison. That's going to be a trendy 12, five. And then you got Duke against Vermont. Duke is Duke.
01:06:57 I know Kat doesn't want to hear that. We've got Kentucky, the best scoring team of the Calipari
01:07:02 era. And then if you look at the bottom right in the region of firepower, you've got Florida.
01:07:07 You know, again, they lost their center. Micah hand-logged into a, an injury on Sunday,
01:07:12 a leg injury against Auburn, but they're going to probably go in against the winner of Colorado,
01:07:16 Boise state, Colorado, a potent offensive team. And then Marquette's the two,
01:07:21 chock as smart as you know, saying on CBS sports network that he's, that they're planning on Tyler
01:07:25 Cole coming back. There is major, major firepower in that region. I have loved Florida's ability to
01:07:32 score the ball throughout, obviously this season, they, they're a little bit different now upfront
01:07:37 without hand-logged in, but you look at the offensive capabilities of the teams in this
01:07:41 region. It is exquisite. Yeah. I, yeah. I mean, PFT and I obviously were going up against each
01:07:47 other in the first round. Then you got Jake and Hank going up against each other. This is going
01:07:51 to be a fun region. We're going to get back to John Rothstein in a second. He's brought to you
01:07:57 by Peloton. I was on my Peloton earlier today. Been doing some classes on the bike. We're back
01:08:02 on the bike, baby buns of anarchy, get it going. And wherever you're beginning and wherever you
01:08:06 want to be Peloton encourages you to just start Peloton helps you start no matter what level

01:08:46 by our great friends over at Coors Light. The mountains were blue this weekend for St. Patrick's
01:08:50 Day. I'm happy to report there's some seriously blue mountains. Had a great time with the help
01:08:55 of my good friend Coors Light. From day to day annoyances to the big stuff life throws your way,
01:08:59 it's easy to get worked up, but there's a better way, a chiller way. You can turn that canceled
01:09:04 concert into a parking lot dance party. If it was too cold for an ocean swim, well, you can play
01:09:08 volleyball. You can light a bonfire instead. That's choosing chill. And when you choose chill,
01:09:13 you can reach for Coors Light. When the mountains turn blue, it's as cold as the Rockies.
01:09:17 When you choose to rise above it all, choose chill, choose Coors Light. Get Coors Light
01:09:21 delivered straight to your door with Instacart by going to coorslight.com/take. Celebrate
01:09:26 responsibly. Coors Brewing Company, Golden, Colorado. And now here's more John Rothstein.
01:09:31 Yeah. Can you give us a pick for JMU, Wisconsin? I know you said people on the periphery, people
01:09:38 on the outside, trendy 12-5 pick for JMU. Does that mean there you go in Wisconsin?
01:09:42 I'm going to take Wisconsin. I like Wisconsin to play Duke in a rematch of the 2015 national title
01:09:49 game at the Barclays Center. I've got Houston. And then obviously I think A&M beats Nebraska. I
01:09:55 love the way A&M is playing, even though they lost a little early. Nebraska, again, never won
01:09:59 an NCAA tournament game. I'll take Texas Tech over NC State, Kentucky over Oakland. I got Florida
01:10:05 playing Marquette. I would take Florida over Marquette. That's a little bit, you know,
01:10:10 I'm going to break it open a little bit there. Then I'm going to have Kentucky, Florida in the
01:10:14 Sweet 16 and SEC game. I'm going to take Wisconsin to beat Duke. And then I'm going to take Houston
01:10:23 to play Wisconsin. And I've got Houston beating Kentucky in the Elite Eight in the region of
01:10:27 firepower. Okay. How about this? If JMU beats Wisconsin, can JMU get a John Rothsteinism?
01:10:33 Can you come up with something for Harrisonburg? Well, I can't force Rothsteinisms. Rothsteinism
01:10:38 are things that can't be forced. Yeah, but if they beat Wisconsin, if they shocked the world,
01:10:42 if these JMU Dukes beat the Badgers. I don't have a Rothsteinism for Kansas, Kentucky, Gonzaga. I
01:10:50 mean, they've done a little bit more than JMU. Yeah, so far. What was your last Rothsteinism
01:10:55 that you came up with? I'd have to go back and look at things in the lab. But, you know, one of
01:11:01 the things that, you know, got a lot of play today was the Keith Danbrot one, because nobody for a
01:11:06 long time cared about Duquesne. But when Keith Danbrot did the Duquesne job, I called it Mission
01:11:11 Impossible. And then Duquesne, like a count, you know, tweeted today, "Mission accomplished."
01:11:16 Oh, a little tip of the hat to the GOAT. I like that.
01:11:20 Duquesne hasn't been to the tournament since '77, so Mission Impossible got accomplished. But,
01:11:25 yeah, you know, I don't just come up with them and throw it out. Everybody, you know, is like,
01:11:28 "Oh, I want to tag along. I want to tag along." It's like, it's not that easy.
01:11:30 No, what about just handing those out? Harrisonburg, more than just meth.
01:11:35 What about that? You like that one?
01:11:36 Interesting. Interesting BFJ.
01:11:37 That means no.
01:11:38 I think that would be good. Harrisonburg, the Las Vegas of Central Virginia.
01:11:41 That's not what I've heard about Harrisonburg.
01:11:44 Oh, well, my friend, you have not spent time at Finnegan's Cove when they get the cigs inside
01:11:48 and the jello shots going. Fair enough. I have a feeling that you might have had enough for me
01:11:53 during your stint tenure there. How long was it? Four years. Exactly four years. Thanks, John.
01:11:57 That was a really mean question.
01:11:59 Yeah. I just wanted to check.
01:12:01 All right. What about the last one, Midwest?
01:12:03 Well, the Midwest region is the region of tension.
01:12:08 Okay.
01:12:09 Now, why is it the region of tension? Well, your one seat is Purdue. Your two seat is Tennessee,
01:12:15 who has not been past the Sweet 16 under Rick Barnes. Your fourth seat is Kansas, who again,
01:12:25 did not have both Kevin McCullough and Hunter Dickinson available for the Big 12 tournament.
01:12:31 So there's a lot of tension in this region right now. And I also think,
01:12:36 you know, when you look at the one seeds, guys, I think the path for Purdue, and I know you have
01:12:44 to obviously take this with a grain of salt because nothing is easy for Purdue in March.
01:12:48 I think the path for Purdue is very favorable to at least get to the Elite Eight. The first two
01:12:55 games are at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. You're going to play the winner of Utah State in
01:12:59 TCU second. And then if you win there, your five and your four are Gonzaga, which is the most
01:13:06 vulnerable Gonzaga team we've had since 2016. Then you have Kansas, we've discussed, without
01:13:12 McCullough, without Dickinson, potentially, in the Big 12. Well, they didn't play in the Big 12
01:13:16 tournament, but they're obviously very wounded. I mean, it's not a great Kansas team, even if
01:13:20 those two players play. I'd be shocked if Purdue doesn't get to the Elite Eight. I know that's
01:13:25 saying a lot concerning the way things have gone in the NCAA tournament. And then the bottom,
01:13:29 I'm looking at Creighton being an underrated team. I think they lost early in the Big East
01:13:35 tournament. That changed things. And then also if Texas wins and Tennessee wins, we could have a
01:13:40 game in the round of 32, Rick Barnes against his old school and against his former assistant,
01:13:45 Rodney Terrell. Okay. So what was region of tension? What was, was there anything else
01:13:50 that we were going to name this region? When I saw Purdue and Tennessee together,
01:13:59 it was either the region of tension or the region of pressure, but I thought tension was better.
01:14:02 Which of these teams is best equipped to handle tension?
01:14:06 Well, if history tells you anything, it might not be any of them, but I would say Creighton.
01:14:11 I think Creighton's the dark horse in this region. I'm going to say Creighton to get to
01:14:16 the elite eight and lose to Purdue. I'm going to, I think that Purdue will exercise the demon
01:14:21 much like Virginia in 2019 after losing the UMBC and get to a final four.
01:14:26 Okay. All right. So your final four, and then maybe give us your national champion.
01:14:30 I am going to go with UConn out of the region of gladiators. I'm going to go with Arizona out of
01:14:35 the region of drama. I'm going to go with Houston out of the region of firepower and then Purdue
01:14:40 out of the region of tension. And I like UConn over Purdue clinging against Edy, a battle of
01:14:45 the Titans in the title game and UConn led by Dan Hurley, as we said, brother to a famous point guard,
01:14:52 son of a famous coach getting his vengeance in this tournament or the next, becoming the first
01:14:57 back-to-back national champion since Florida in 2006 and 2007. Okay. All right. Do you have
01:15:03 any comment about the big East getting fucked over? Well, the thing is this, and Murphy's Law
01:15:12 sometimes happens with the NCAA tournament in terms of the bubble situation. The big East started
01:15:18 championship week with seven teams in play for the NCAA tournament. Now the thing was the big East
01:15:26 all season long had a number of teams in play, but so many teams were tied up with the bubble.
01:15:32 So there were only three teams all year long that separated themselves. And we had a Murphy's Law
01:15:40 type situation for bubble teams. Now, what do I mean by that? If Florida Atlantic won the AAC
01:15:46 tournament, we would have seen one bid open up because they are an at-large team. If Dayton won
01:15:54 the A10 tournament, we would have seen an at-large bid open up because Dayton was already projected
01:15:59 as an at-large team. So that's two bids right there. And then if NC State didn't win the ACC
01:16:06 tournament, we would have seen that large bid open up. And then if Oregon didn't win the PAC-12
01:16:12 tournament, we would have seen that large bid open up. That's four. And then we found out tonight,
01:16:18 if New Mexico didn't win the Mountain West tournament, we would have seen that large bid
01:16:24 open up. That's five bids in five spots for other teams where the big East surely would have been
01:16:31 represented. I thought that St. John's would have been a little bit closer to the cut line.
01:16:35 They weren't among the first four out for the selection committee from what we saw earlier
01:16:40 tonight. But obviously you have three big East teams in Creighton, Marquette, and Yukon that are
01:16:46 all good enough to go to a final four. But the big East right now with its lowest number of teams in
01:16:51 the NCAA tournament since 1993. It's crazy. And now if all five of those hadn't opened up,
01:16:58 would Villanova have been one of the last four out then?
01:17:03 Probably would have. The first four out or the last four out?
01:17:06 No, last four out. It would have been first four out. So there would have been the eighth team out.
01:17:13 Where would they have bumped up if we had had no bubbles burst? Could we have had at least
01:17:19 last four out? I think so.
01:17:22 Okay. All right. So they would have been eight. So they were like,
01:17:24 if the committee had just said, "You know what? This is an awesome year. Let's do 78 teams."
01:17:32 Would Villanova have been in?
01:17:33 Potentially.
01:17:35 Potentially. Let's do a little thought experiment though. If St. John's had gotten in,
01:17:39 what seed would they have been?
01:17:40 They would have been in Dayton in the first four.
01:17:43 First four instead of UVA.
01:17:44 Yeah. Virginia was the team. When I did, I do a bracket projection every day during
01:17:50 championship week. So when I did my bracket projection today, I did not have Virginia in
01:17:55 the field. Now what we learned, and I talked to Bubba Cunningham about this, who obviously is
01:18:01 part of the committee, is that the committee really valued teams who didn't have any bad
01:18:06 losses. Now, if you look at the metrics for both Virginia and Colorado, not too many
01:18:11 impressive wins. Virginia beat Florida, won at Clemson. Colorado beat Washington State twice,
01:18:16 but they didn't have any quad three or four losses. So the committee really took that
01:18:20 into consideration. Now, Texas A&M had a weird resume, had five quad three losses, but Texas
01:18:26 A&M beat Iowa State, who's a two seed, beat Tennessee, who's a two seed, beat Kentucky
01:18:32 twice, who's a three seed, and also beat Todd Golden in Florida, who's a seven seed.
01:18:38 Okay. John, we haven't had you on since you had the birth of your child. What does fatherhood
01:18:47 look like for John Rossi? How's it going? I appreciate you asking. Every day is a
01:18:52 bye game. That's the best way I can say it. It feels like you're down eight at the under 12
01:18:56 timeout every single day. You know it. There is nothing in the world like being a father and
01:19:02 having obviously a child and the way it makes you feel complete as a family, but you also feel like
01:19:07 you're in a bye game against Matt Lengel and Colgate and they're drilling threes and there's
01:19:11 nothing that you can do. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's a great way to put it. I often say the same thing.
01:19:16 So what's your schedule? You're going to Dayton. Do you know where you're going after Dayton?
01:19:23 Yeah, I'm going to be in Dayton. I actually have some TV to do tomorrow morning. I'm going to do
01:19:26 CBS this morning or CBS mornings tomorrow morning. And then I'm flying to Dayton. We're going to do
01:19:32 the first four Tuesday, Wednesday. Then after the games, I'm going to be going to Memphis
01:19:38 for the Friday, Sunday. So Friday, Sunday is going to be Houston, Longwood, Nebraska, A&M,
01:19:44 and then Clemson, New Mexico, Baylor, Colgate. And then I'll be back in studio on CBS Sports Network
01:19:51 for the sweet 16, the elite eight. And then we'll be at the final four in Phoenix. Are you going to
01:19:55 go take a dip in the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid in their, their tank that they got there?
01:19:59 What's the best pro shop here? My friend, it's the most magical place on earth.
01:20:04 No, I mean, I'm pretty singularly focused until April 9th. Yeah. I was going to ask you, what's
01:20:09 your take on Justin Fields being traded to the Steelers? What position does he play? He's a
01:20:13 quarterback for what team? For the, well, he wasn't embarrassed. Now he's on the Steelers.
01:20:18 Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I mean, I really haven't followed the Steelers since like Neil O'Donnell.
01:20:23 Oh, okay. All right. What about, uh, did you watch the Superbowl?
01:20:26 Uh, we had a party. Yeah. And what'd you think?
01:20:29 Um, my home's played, right? Yep. And they play, uh, Andy Reed was the coach.
01:20:37 Yeah. Who was the other team that played against Taylor Swift? No, uh, the 49ers.
01:20:42 Right. And that's not Jeff Garcia, is it? Nope. Nope. Not anymore.
01:20:46 Nope. Yeah. Close. Um, was it Brock Purdy?
01:20:50 Yes. Yeah. Yes.
01:20:51 Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Um, I was kind of just socializing cause like, I, you know,
01:20:54 the college basketball game was over. I think I worked the seat in all Villanova game that day.
01:20:59 And I was just kind of, was just talking to people. I didn't really have an interest in the game.
01:21:02 I would like you to, to maybe you, you have the, you're relentless. We started this interview,
01:21:05 you're saying you're relentless. Uh, I have a longstanding thought that there should be a
01:21:11 college basketball game after the Superbowl on Superbowl Sunday. Everyone's looking for
01:21:15 something to bet after they lose their Superbowl bets. Can we get that into someone's head and be
01:21:21 like, Hey, let's schedule a game. Let's play a game. Well, I think one thing we should do,
01:21:27 and you tell me, because you know, you say you're always looking for, you know, stuff like that,
01:21:31 you know, for additional ways to, you know, obviously have courts. Yeah. I think that,
01:21:36 and you know, I'm all about standalone games in college basketball. I think, you know, a certain
01:21:42 league should play a five o'clock game on like a Friday afternoon. You happy? Like a happy hour
01:21:48 thing. And I also think you hit that like certain leagues, maybe not the highest profile leagues
01:21:53 should play 10 AM games on Sunday, on Saturday morning. So it's a standalone game and then not
01:21:58 have any, not have any tension and get things going quicker. I like that. We also came up
01:22:02 with an idea that you should pitch to people because this one has legs PFT. And I, I don't
01:22:07 think that they should expand the tournament. No, no, we should not expand the tournament under any
01:22:12 circumstances. And it aggravates me, not you guys, but that people think that it's a good idea.
01:22:17 Jeff Goldblum said in the lost world, the sequel to Jurassic park that taking dinosaurs off this
01:22:23 Island was the worst idea in the long, sad history of bad ideas, expanding the tournament might be
01:22:28 worse. Okay. So not an expense of the tournament, but if on selection Sunday, we have the eight
01:22:36 teams that would be potentially in on the bubble, in the bubble, in, in the tournament. So, you know,
01:22:42 Boise state, Colorado, Virginia, Colorado state, all we're in Oklahoma, Seton hall, Indiana state
01:22:47 and pit. We have them all in the same location. The minute we have the bracket, we have those
01:22:52 eight teams play, uh, to see who gets the last four spots. Well, I think, I think that's a good
01:22:58 idea. It's expanding the tournament, but yeah. I have also said this, um, I love, you know,
01:23:04 where we're at right now with the amount of teams in the NCAA tournament. I feel that if you're an
01:23:08 automatic qualifier and you win your league, you should be in the round of 64. And I have said that,
01:23:15 you know, repeatedly. So I would like it. And I love, you know, I've worked into the first
01:23:19 four and Dayton. It's great. If the last eight at large teams someday could be the teams in Dayton.
01:23:25 Yeah. So if you're looking at it right now, let's look at, well, you know, the matchups in Dayton,
01:23:30 the last day at large teams, the 11 seeds were not obviously the, we're at, we're not at large
01:23:37 teams. They're automatic qualifiers. So the last day at large teams were Nevada.
01:23:41 And then let's see, Boise state, Colorado, well, Boise state, Colorado, and then Virginia,
01:23:50 Colorado state, but also, so that's four Nevada is five. Drake was an AQ. So if you had Nevada,
01:23:59 Michigan state, a and M and then PCU or Northwestern in Dayton, and then you let
01:24:06 obviously the 16th playing around a 64. I think that would be an incredible way.
01:24:12 If we could ever do that to really draw people in. I like that. I like that. And not to say that
01:24:17 people aren't obviously excited or whatever. And look, the first four is great. We had fairly
01:24:21 Dickinson last year who wound up beating Purdue and fairly Dickinson was a treat to watch. But
01:24:25 I feel if you are a mid-major team that wins your league, you deserve to be in the round of 64.
01:24:31 And those last eight at largest should start off the tournament in Dayton.
01:24:34 Yeah. And the first four is great because usually a team makes a run. I mean, we had UCLA go all
01:24:39 the way to the final four. Like there's a lot of time out of the last 11 years, a team in the first
01:24:44 four has won a game in the NCAA tournament. So who's that team going to be this year?
01:24:50 I think the team to watch in the first four. Let's see. That's a great question.
01:24:56 Also, do you have a, do you have a name for the first four? You should give a name to that.
01:25:00 The first four. I would say the team most likely to win an NCAA tournament game this year. The
01:25:05 first four is the Boise state Colorado winner. I love Florida. That's a really, really tough
01:25:10 round of 64 game because Colorado, if you think about it, guys, KJ Simpson, potent player. I
01:25:17 think if Colorado was better, he would have been an all American candidate, potent player. Cody
01:25:21 Williams is a projected lottery pick. Tristan De Silva is going to play basketball professionally.
01:25:26 Also Eddie Lampkin, if you remember guys, he's on the TCU team who almost beat Arizona two years
01:25:32 ago when they had Ben Mather and he went for 20 and 14. Florida is going to have its hands full
01:25:37 with either Colorado state or Boise. Boise playing in a third straight NCAA tournament under Leon
01:25:42 Rice. And another, another storyline here, guys, which I, you know, wrote about for my daily
01:25:48 newsletter tomorrow. One of the big takeaways is the mountain West got no respect for double
01:25:53 digit seeds out of the mountain West. I mean, Nevada, the two teams in the first four, and then
01:25:59 also New Mexico as tens and 11 seats. I mean, as a wise man once said, wasn't personal, it was
01:26:05 strictly business, but they did get respect for the fact that they got six teams in and the biggest
01:26:10 got the real question and that should be celebrated. But the mountain West, like I felt like
01:26:15 all week I today, if the mountain West gets six teams in, that's great. You should celebrate it.
01:26:19 The mountain West has something to prove in this NCAA tournament. You were slighted. People don't
01:26:23 respect you on the committee. Yeah. All right. I got one last question. So rowback question,
01:26:26 RHO, BACK.com, promo code take 20% off your first purchase. Cues, his polos, hoodies, joggers,
01:26:32 shorts, rowback.com, promo code take 20% off your first purchase. Go right now. We love rowback,
01:26:38 the most comfortable clothes out there. Last question for you, John, we haven't talked to
01:26:43 you in a while. How was Europe? Europe was incredible. Really?
01:26:48 I mean, when shocker was there and it was Briante Weber at the top of the press,
01:26:55 I mean, it was tough, really tough to kind of take that over anything else. Just because, I mean,
01:27:01 you know, you had the band, you had the havoc, you had the pressure. There's a clip if you guys can
01:27:06 find it. It was in 2013. Briante Weber stripped Alex Barlow on Butler and threw down a ridiculous
01:27:13 jam and just punched the air. And like, it made you like, seriously, like want to find a picket
01:27:17 fence to start doing pushups on because it was so crazy. But Europe was great. I think we stay,
01:27:24 and I think the trip was long, Kat. Like we were there for 18 days. We had a couple of,
01:27:29 we had a couple of friends get married about three hours outside of Paris. So we went to Paris first.
01:27:34 We hung out with them for a little bit. It was incredible. The bread, the scene. Paris is an
01:27:39 incredible city. We then went to three stops in Italy. You were right about the food, both of you,
01:27:44 in terms of it being incredible. I mean, I have, I have a, we talk about bucket list items.
01:27:48 The show Searching for Italy with Stan Tucci, to me, is one of my favorite shows because I'm such
01:27:55 a food fan. Like that to me would be, I think, a tremendous guest for you guys to have Stan Tucci
01:28:02 on part of my take. Because this guy's just housing food throughout Italy and he doesn't
01:28:06 gain any weight. But we went to, we went to Portofino. We went to Rome. We went to the Amalfi
01:28:11 coast. There's now direct flights from the Amalfi coast to New York. Then we went to Greece last.
01:28:16 Nice. Nice. Yeah. So are you willing to take back your statement, don't waste calories on pizza
01:28:21 outside the Eastern time zone? Not in terms of the United States.
01:28:27 But pizza in Italy, you can do that. I can do that. I leaned into
01:28:32 the Italy trip, but I, but the bread, but the bread in France was the thing that really blew
01:28:35 my mind. The bread in France. And the thing is this, I, you guys know how much I love food,
01:28:41 but in France, you like, you can be content with a beer and a great loaf of bread and like
01:28:44 get some butter. So content. Paris, France, the Siegel center. You got to pick one.
01:28:50 The A10. I mean, aside from a rare thing like this year, they've kind of become a one bid league. So
01:28:56 I'd probably take Paris over the Siegel center. Wow. John Rothstein sold out. Damn. Okay.
01:29:03 Sorry to tell you that. I don't think it's real. I don't think it's really anything to do with
01:29:08 Paris. It's just an indictment on the Atlantic tenant. Never should have one from 16 to 18
01:29:12 league games. Yeah. From 16 to 18 league games guys after the 14th season. Think about this
01:29:16 for a sec. In 2013, the Atlantic 10 had five teams in the NCAA tournament five. And then after that
01:29:22 season, Temple left Xavier and Butler left. And the next year with the same crop of teams, pretty
01:29:28 much what it has now, the league at six teams, the NCAA tournament. Then after that year,
01:29:33 all of a sudden the eighth and thought it was a power conference. It went from 16 to 18
01:29:37 leagues. Never been the same sense. You need that non-conference scheduling flexibility.
01:29:42 It's the same flexibility that the WCC had that allowed Randy Bennett to schedule Colorado state
01:29:47 and New Mexico to wins. Obviously that helps St. Mary's get in a position that's in right now,
01:29:52 which is to be a five seat in the NCAA tournament. I do have one last, last question for you. So we
01:29:56 were just talking before he came on about a long beach, Long Beach state and Dan Monson.
01:30:01 Wild story. Is there, is there any chance that he gets his job back if they went in the first round?
01:30:07 It's as awkward of a situation as I've seen, you know, that would be incredible. I think he made a
01:30:15 comment about that. It's like, he said, it's like your girlfriend coming back and trying to get
01:30:18 back together after you get famous. If somebody asked him if like, you know, he would get his
01:30:21 job back. You know, it's a, it's as bizarre scenarios I've seen in 20 years doing this,
01:30:27 but you know, there is a tie into that first round matchup. Do you guys know it?
01:30:31 What is it? Gonzaga? Dan Monson was the head coach of Gonzaga when he was Aga went to the elite eight
01:30:37 and 99 lost to Yukon coach Calhoun's first final four. And he's playing Tommy Lloyd, a long time
01:30:42 Gonzaga system. Ooh. I just, I love the fact that he pulled a Hank. They were like, Hey, you're
01:30:47 fired. And he was like, yeah, can I just keep showing up for work? Okay, cool. The boys are
01:30:50 playing for him. Love it. They're playing for him, man. Yeah. All right. Well, John, thank you.
01:30:55 As always, you're the best, uh, best time of year and we'll be tuning in. We'll be watching you in
01:31:00 Dayton on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Always great being with you guys. Love you dearly. We sleep
01:31:05 in May. Absolutely. Bye John. John. John Roth scene was brought to you by proper 12 proper.
01:31:13 12 was founded by a true Irishman Dublin. 12 zone, the notorious Conor McGregor. We were on a boat
01:31:19 dying the river green. Shout out to a plumbers one 30, right? Yep. Did a great job dying that,
01:31:25 that Chicago river green. And we're drinking some proper number 12 Irish whiskey. We're passing
01:31:30 around and make outstanding mixed drinks. The, uh, the Irish apple. That was a great, it was
01:31:35 Irish apple and ginger ale, right? Delicious. Such a good drink. Such a refreshing drink.
01:31:40 Probably did what four or five shots on that boat. At least had a great time with our good friends
01:31:45 at proper number 12. You can make it a proper Amazon prime time. You can grab a bottle of proper
01:31:50 12 for the premiere of the new film roadhouse starring Conor McGregor. Proper 12 is a rich and
01:31:56 smooth blend of golden grain and single malt aged four years and bourbon barrels. Anything else just
01:32:01 wouldn't be proper. By the way, roadhouse, one of the all time great movies. I can't wait to see the
01:32:06 remake. The original was awesome. Probably in my top 10 movies of all time, crack open a bottle
01:32:10 of the original rich and smooth proper number 12 or new crisp and fresh Irish apple. The Irish
01:32:15 apple is so good. So good. Okay. Let's talk some Justin Fields. Oh, by the way, I should have
01:32:23 mentioned during bracket talk, uh, we are running a bracket at Stella blue coffee. All you got to do
01:32:28 is buy anything on Stella blue coffee.com and you will get a link to join the bracket, fill it out.
01:32:35 If you win the bracket, you get a trip to Chicago HQ, uh, with two friends and you get to spend the
01:32:41 day with us hanging out, playing ball, whatever you want to do. Also the other, I think places
01:32:46 two through 11, we'll get a signed Stella blue custom basketball. So you're filling out brackets.
01:32:52 You got to drink coffee. Anyway, we have mugs, we have hats, everything. Stella blue coffee.com.
01:32:57 Just go buy anything between now and Thursday when the games tip and you will get that link and you
01:33:03 can join the bracket. Justin Fields, Justin Fields traded to Pittsburgh Steelers for a
01:33:09 sixth rounder. That could be a fourth rounder depending on playing time, depending on playing
01:33:12 time. So I'm going to give my, uh, I think actually a very balanced take that people probably are not
01:33:19 going to like because it's been a very polarizing subject. And I, I have a take that's I'm going to
01:33:24 give you my honest take, uh, that's balanced and I feel is just how I feel. Uh, the bears failed
01:33:33 Justin Fields. It sucks that this is the way it ended. Uh, they set him up in a really bad spot
01:33:40 in the fact that they drafted him with a coach that was already on the hot seat. They were planning
01:33:46 on sitting him that first year. And then remember they, they decided, Hey, let's start him against
01:33:51 the Browns. One of the best defensive, one of the best pass rushes in the game. And this will be fun.
01:33:57 And he got sacked like nine times and through for 27 yards. And we were off and running year two,
01:34:02 the team was actively tanking. They had one of the worst defense I've ever seen. They had 10
01:34:09 games stretch at the end of the season where they let up 25 or more points and six out of 10 of
01:34:14 those games, they let up 30 or more points. And then year three this year, they were basically
01:34:19 like, be so good. Justin Fields that we will keep you, uh, go out and do it with a OC that doesn't
01:34:25 really know how to use you. Could Justin Fields have played better? Yes. But I also think he was
01:34:30 set up to fail. And I'm really sad about that because I like Justin Fields as a guy. And I
01:34:34 think if you listen to anyone in that locker room, they love him as a leader. It sucks that a guy
01:34:39 that was so exciting and I had so much hope for was failed by the organization. So I thought that
01:34:46 they had to trade him and I'm happy that he was traded just because Caleb Williams is the future.
01:34:51 And you couldn't have done the Justin Fields, Caleb Williams thing at the same time. And if
01:34:55 you had kept him, maybe you could have gotten more from when quarterbacks get injured, but that would
01:34:58 have been a disaster for Caleb Williams. You would have basically done to Caleb Williams,
01:35:02 what you did to Justin Fields and set them up for failure. So at least they're learning from
01:35:05 these mistakes. Also shout out Ryan polls and the bears. They did say they were going to do
01:35:09 right by Justin Fields. And by all accounts they did because they had a few different suitors.
01:35:15 And I think like Patriots fans are like, why didn't we get Justin Fields? Eagles fans like,
01:35:20 why don't we get Justin Fields? I think Justin Fields was like, I want to go to a place where
01:35:24 I can play. Yeah. So when you look at what Ryan polls did, I think you can, you can definitely
01:35:29 say that the bears did not get everything they could have gotten for Justin. Correct.
01:35:33 So a legitimate criticism of Ryan polls would be to say your job is to do what's best for your team,
01:35:40 right? Chicago bears. And in this case, it looks like he wanted to keep his word to Justin Fields
01:35:46 and do right by him more than he wanted to maximize trade value for Justin Fields.
01:35:50 So you might say that he made a mistake doing that, but I also think that this is in his mind,
01:35:56 at least like a long-term play for becoming known as a GM that will do something nice for a player
01:36:02 as a way to thank them for what they've done in that city. So like it could, it could,
01:36:07 I guess, make Chicago a slightly more attractive if it's between the bears and a team that's in
01:36:12 a situation like the bears and you have a history that's been built up of doing right by your
01:36:16 players that could nudge a free agent or two over the edge. And Ryan polls is probably admitting
01:36:22 that the bears failed him and it wasn't Ryan polls failure. Like, let's be honest because it
01:36:27 was, remember it, Justin Fields wasn't drafted by Ryan polls. Ryan polls shows up in year two of
01:36:32 Justin Fields. He inherits Justin Fields. Ryan polls job is to basically completely strip this
01:36:39 thing down and build it back up, which he has been doing an incredible job of. Unfortunately,
01:36:43 Justin Fields wasn't in that plan other than Justin Fields playing so well in year three that
01:36:48 they had to have them. And then the contract part is a big part of this because everyone,
01:36:53 I think was saying, well, you only got, all you got was a six, maybe a fourth.
01:36:56 They, the Steelers have to decide whether they want to pick up the fifth year option in like
01:37:02 three months. Yeah. So I think a big part of this was that Fields, his value ended up being so low
01:37:07 because GMs don't want to have to make a hard decision before he plays a snap. You have to
01:37:11 decide if you want to keep him, which is extremely relatable. It's like, Oh, I'm going to trade like
01:37:15 a third round pick for this guy. And it's just going to make me have to make a big decision
01:37:18 soon. No, my big decision is trading for the guy. I don't want to have to double down on doing work.
01:37:23 Right. So that's a, I understand that. Um, if you're Russell Wilson, I saw he reacted when he
01:37:28 say like this QB room is about to be lit, Justin. Yeah. I hope Justin Fields beats him out. I think
01:37:33 he's better than Russell Wilson right now. I think he, I think he might be like for the future. He,
01:37:37 he definitely is. Uh, and then Kenny picket is out of Pittsburgh too. Yeah. So Kenny did not react
01:37:43 well, apparently to the rust signing. Um, I guess reading the writing on the wall, it just seems
01:37:48 like Russ is now anointed as a guy. Yeah. They've just, they told Russ, no, Justin Fields is, I
01:37:53 think they said Justin Fields was going to be the starter. Did they? No, I think Schefter said
01:37:57 something. No, I think he said the opposite. I think he said, Oh, Russ is going to be a starter.
01:38:01 Yeah. Yeah. So like Kenny wanted out because I think they told Kenny like, this is our guy for
01:38:06 the next season. Yeah. Or he's the presumptive starter. Yeah. And so Kenny's like, no, I got
01:38:10 to get out of here. Uh, Oh wait, breaking moves. Breaking moves. Villanova gets a one seat in the
01:38:19 NIT. Let's go Max. Max. Yeah. It's big. VCU is a tough draw though. You know what? You know what,
01:38:25 Max, people forget that the NIT was the original national championship tournament. It's a very
01:38:30 prestigious tournament. Win it. Yeah. I'm sure the boys are going to be fired up. Gotta be very
01:38:36 fired up. Uh, okay. That was our Villanova talk. Um, yeah, I, the Kenny, I mean, he was an Eagles
01:38:43 fan growing up. I hope he has a long career. We like Kenny. Uh, and now he's in a good, like
01:38:49 everyone seems to be going to stable places. Like it was unstable for Kenny in Pittsburgh. Now it's
01:38:55 stable in Philadelphia. He's not the starter, but he knows his role. Justin Fields was unstable in,
01:39:01 in Chicago. We failed him. Now he's going to a stable organization in Pittsburgh, which I think
01:39:06 he's going to end up like, I think he'll probably win the job. I know they said Russell is the,
01:39:10 is the starter, but I, once you watch Justin Fields versus Russ, it's going to be apparent.
01:39:14 George, George Pickens is not going to like Russell Wilson. No, he's not going to like him
01:39:19 at all. So I had one last thing about the Justin Fields thing, and this is where,
01:39:22 cause it was very tumultuous the last two months on bears, Twitter and bears, you know,
01:39:27 seeing people on the street. There's just fields camp. There's Caleb Williams camp. I've been in
01:39:31 the Caleb Williams camp just out of the logic of you. Ryan polls set this whole thing up to be,
01:39:37 to get that one pick and to get a franchise quarterback on a rookie deal. When you've
01:39:42 already invested in some other parts of your roster and that's the window Ryan polls is doing,
01:39:48 he's correcting everything that was wrong for Justin Fields. Cause like I said,
01:39:52 Justin Fields stepped into a disaster situation with no defense. They obviously got to eat you
01:39:57 more later, but they like very little offensive talent to throw to Ryan polls is now doing the
01:40:02 reverse where I think the Caleb Williams might be set up better than any number one pick ever.
01:40:07 And I know that sounds crazy. This is still the bears, but remember it's not often that you get a
01:40:13 number one pick as a seven and 10 team. The defense is good. He has a legitimate number one.
01:40:19 He now has a legitimate number two in Keenan Allen. He has a top 10 tight end and Cole and
01:40:23 Cole commit. He's got a running game. Like this is finally outside of the coach, maybe being on
01:40:29 the hot seat. This is finally you've set up your, your future franchise quarterback to walk into a
01:40:35 situation that he can succeed in. And that is why every bears fan should be very happy that Ryan
01:40:41 polls is the GM and that he made this move to trade Justin Fields and we turn the page and we
01:40:46 go to the next one. Now everyone's telling me Caleb Williams is going to be a bust. I get it.
01:40:50 He sucks. Nail paint, whatever. I don't care. I think he's really good. And he set up in a
01:40:55 perfect way. Yeah. Like Andrew luck, Andrew luck went to a two wind Colts team. Trevor Lawrence
01:41:00 went to a terrible team. Wasn't that the Peyton got hurt that year. Peyton got hurt that year.
01:41:05 They even went to win to have two wins. I don't even know. We can probably look up and see what,
01:41:09 what the best record was for any team. Yeah. Pick number one, all these teams like Bryce
01:41:14 young has gone into the worst situation. Like the there's, you can go, Trevor Lawrence was in a bad
01:41:20 situation. All these number one picks Baker Mayfield, they haven't been put on teams that
01:41:25 say seven and 10 that have pieces around them that are legitimate. And Oh, I forgot to mention,
01:41:31 we also have the ninth pick. So that's another thing that's going to help Caleb Williams,
01:41:34 whether it be a pass catcher or defensive player. I don't know. I just think that Ryan
01:41:38 pulls is set this up where it now is the question is if Caleb Williams is great,
01:41:43 the bears will have a D a definite window to win a lot of football.
01:41:48 It's a very funny thing that we do to, uh, to first overall picks. We're like,
01:41:52 congratulations. You're going to the shittiest team. Hope you're good enough to overcome how
01:41:55 bad this team is. Right. Will you be Baker? Will you be good enough to overcome the Browns
01:41:59 inning or not? Uh, urban Meyer is going to kick, uh, half your roster, Trevor. I hope you're good
01:42:06 enough to overcome him. Uh, ditching your team after Thursday night games and fingering co-eds
01:42:10 buttholes. Right. Good luck. Like I, no offense to you guys, but would you not say that the bears
01:42:15 are in a better situation for a first, uh, a QB taken in the first round than the commanders in
01:42:21 the, I think our, I think our ownership is strong. I think the ownership and DC ownership's about to
01:42:25 be dead, but yeah. Yeah. Shout out Virginia. She's still kicking, but like this, he's set up
01:42:31 better than a number one pick has probably ever been. So I think they should build around Tyson
01:42:34 Beijing. Yeah. There's gotta be at least a few out there. Yeah. There's gotta be some Tyson
01:42:39 Beijing heads out there. It's walking around, but I, yeah, I mean, I was an arm wrestler. I'm
01:42:42 excited about this. I, I, I've, if you go through Ryan polls and what he has done, he gets so much
01:42:49 heat for chase Claypool, which was a mistake, but he also cut bait on that mistake, which was,
01:42:53 you know, some GMs are stubborn like that. Everything else he has done Montez sweat,
01:42:58 DJ more, you know, getting the Carolina number one, all these things, beast beefing up the
01:43:03 defense, not going crazy on free agency. Keep getting in a good cap spot. I he's been great.
01:43:10 And so why wouldn't you trust them? And why wouldn't you trust his evaluation of Kayla
01:43:13 Williams? And I'm very, very excited for the future of the bears. And again, sad Justin Fields,
01:43:19 but I think we have a very, very bright future. So you shouldn't be, it was, it was, it was
01:43:24 tumultuous. It was people were at each other's necks. Yeah. This is, it's one of the great
01:43:27 controversies of all time. And it's something that you'll be doing a post-mortem on for the
01:43:30 next probably six years. Well, Chicago, we, we don't deal well with the quarterback controversies.
01:43:35 Josh McCown was at a strong camp to start over J cup. Listen, I'm still obsessed with the Kirk
01:43:40 cousins, RG three debate from 10 years ago. This is, you have not yet begun to see the end of this
01:43:45 fight. Yeah. We also had Tyreek Hill in the news again. Oh yeah. Tyreek Hill headline, Adlib
01:43:50 dolphins Tyreek Hill, bullied wife smashed face with unlit cigar police report says. So I'm glad
01:43:57 that they clarified that it was unlit because the first time I saw this, this headline, it just read
01:44:02 that he smashed a cigar into her face, which is bad, but it's way worse if the cigar is lit. Yeah.
01:44:07 This was an unlit cigar. Also the term bullying your wife. What does that, what does that even
01:44:13 mean? I don't know. I don't, I don't know what, I don't know what bullying means anymore. He really
01:44:17 is mad lips every single time he's in the news. He's mad. Yeah. Tyreek, Tyreek Hill, bullied wife,
01:44:23 smashed face with unlit cigar, unlit cigar. Hank, do you want to tell me that I was wrong
01:44:29 and you were right about Justin Fields? You wanted him. I do want him. I think he's gonna be good.
01:44:34 Okay. I think the sealers are going to be good. I still think he could be the guy.
01:44:37 I'm not giving up on that. Yeah. I think, I think the sealers are set up. I think both quarterbacks
01:44:42 are forgotten about, but I think both could be good. Yeah. It'd be fun. Not funny. I don't wish
01:44:48 this, but like something happens. Caleb Williams maybe like has a minor injury. Yes, I'm not gonna
01:44:54 would. And then you trade back for Justin Fields, get him back in town. He knows the system. A lot
01:44:59 of people would like that. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of people would be pumped by that. It seems like
01:45:02 from what I've seen from Chicago people, they're mad. People are mad because they, they, I think
01:45:08 there's a feeling that Justin Fields was failed by the organization, which I agree with. But you
01:45:13 can't be mad when you're given the circumstances of you have a decision you had to make on a fifth
01:45:17 year and you have the roster set up perfectly right now to insert a rookie contract QB. Like
01:45:25 it makes so much sense. If you want to win a super bowl, you got to do it with this rookie contract
01:45:32 and everything else you got around him. I just, it's a no brainer in my mind. Also shout out
01:45:37 Ryan Poles for doing that when the entire city was drunk off their mind so that, you know,
01:45:42 like people probably woke up on Sunday and like, what happened? Oh, there were definitely,
01:45:46 definitely some riots that happened. Like I would have loved to have been in a bar as the,
01:45:50 the word of the trade trickled out, trickled through, just watch the instant reaction from
01:45:54 the crowd, but definitely some blacked out dudes who just like the were told, yeah, but they didn't
01:45:59 find out until Sunday morning. Yeah. They forgot about it. They woke up and like, what? Or they
01:46:02 woke up. They're like, Oh shit. I had a crazy dream. We traded Justin Fields for a six pick.
01:46:07 I think people are also upset. Hank, to your point that like people are mad, people are mad because
01:46:11 it is a fleecing because they were told, yeah, they were told that the compensation was going
01:46:15 to be what Sam Donald's got. Who started that rumor? Who's Schefter was Schefter the one who
01:46:20 said it was a one. There was someone else. No, no, no. Schefter said on our pod that the formula
01:46:26 is out there for what Justin Fields is going to cost. And that's what Sam Donald got, which was
01:46:30 a second or a third or something like that. So people's expectations were, were too high. The
01:46:34 market wasn't that strong. So that's why people actually like the Sam how trade, the Seahawks
01:46:40 gave up more for Sam how, yeah. Then the sealers did for Justin Fields. Yeah. I mean, I, I,
01:46:45 at one point was, Oh, it was Mel. Mel said that it was going to be the eighth overall from the
01:46:50 Falcons. Fuck you, Mel. He fucked us. Who the hell is Mel? I, I remember when that happened. I was
01:46:56 like, this is awesome. Maybe it's true. But in the last three weeks or so I had come to grips and I
01:47:03 even said it on a waddle and Sylvia. I was like, a fourth would be a dream and it could still be a
01:47:08 fourth, but like that was, it felt like it was settling there and I was, I had come to grips
01:47:12 with it. Yeah. Now you got to root for a Russell Wilson meltdown. Yeah. Yeah. I'm rooting for
01:47:16 Justin Fields. So, uh, we've, we turned the page. I, it's better for the, for the bears franchise
01:47:22 going forward to go with kale. Williams is going to be so polarizing. God, people are going to
01:47:26 hate him so much. Not even, not even bears fans. I'm saying like outside, they already hate him.
01:47:31 Max just tweet. I'm getting so fired up for the NIT. We can watch him live tweet. Cause he's not
01:47:36 searching for Sydney Sweeney right now on the computer here. He's just cruising Twitter. Okay.
01:47:40 Jake just walked back in. We got to get his thoughts from him. Also pug just walked in as
01:47:45 well. Pug quick before we get to Jake's thoughts, Seton Hall, give it to us. Give it to them.
01:47:52 So you know, I got screwed three teams out of the big East is just blasphemy. I'm sad.
01:47:58 And it is here. Pug. Okay. Good take. All right. Good day. Pug. So put that on a quote card. Jake.
01:48:06 Yes. Go off so much to break down. If you want to watch back on the Mark Titus show,
01:48:10 we just broke, we just filled out an entire bracket. Okay. I'm not changing it. Wait,
01:48:15 Jake, what's your favorite storyline? Cause we did Jake storyline prediction.
01:48:18 Yeah. My favorite storyline is, well, obviously the number one is produce redemption. Okay. Well,
01:48:23 can they, can they do what Virginia did and when it all after losing to a 16,
01:48:27 another one is an elite eight matchup I have between UNC and Arizona. Arizona would be playing
01:48:34 for the right to go to the final four in their home state. It's in Phoenix. And also Caleb love,
01:48:39 one of their best players, a former North Carolina Tar heel could see them battling for the elite
01:48:44 eight. Okay. That's another one. Um, and then Yukon, the, the, the, the best chance for someone
01:48:50 to repeat since the Florida Gators in Oh six Oh seven. This is it. So what about the part of my
01:48:55 take bowl? I mean, that goes, I'm saying from a big picture, he's talking about national media.
01:49:00 Yeah. Who don't listen to this podcast, who are listening to this podcast right now. Exactly.
01:49:03 Yeah. Um, but yeah, the, the part of my take thing, we, we had our live bracket show and when
01:49:09 it said Wisconsin, James Madison, I was like, wow, that's crazy. But we kind of saw it coming.
01:49:14 And then Duke Vermont right afterwards, all in the same pod. Congratulations to us because one
01:49:19 of our teams are going to the sweet 16. Yeah. So we predicted it. Um, you Vermont's going to go to
01:49:23 the sweet 16 and you're going to be like, I'm actually rooting for you guys. Cause I only
01:49:27 called Vermont for two years and like, I'm rooting for them, but I'm not rooting for them.
01:49:31 But then you're going to definitely root for them. And then you're going to be like,
01:49:33 Oh, I'm feel so bad for you. And then you're going to tweet like cat amounts.
01:49:36 Yeah. It's going to just trigger all of us. I know it is, but I do have, I will say I have
01:49:42 jam you over UVM. Okay. Oh, okay. Yeah. All right. So fuck you. So you have, you have Vermont pulling
01:49:48 off the first round upset. You've always had an anti Wisconsin. I like, no, I listen to Jake is a
01:49:54 college basketball expert. I've always had respect. He's an expert. He's an expert. He's an
01:49:59 expert in sucks every year. I really think that, you know, ball, who's your, in your final four
01:50:06 last year. What's who's in the championship. Cause they're going to, who's in your final four last
01:50:09 year. Uh, I don't know who my final four was, but two years in a row, my national champion has been
01:50:15 eliminated on day one. Okay. Yeah. Two years ago, did you intentionally pick someone that plays on
01:50:20 Friday this year? Nope. I wasn't scared of it because if it happens again, it would be equally
01:50:24 as funny. Okay. Years ago at Kentucky, they lost the St. Peter's on Thursday. Last year at Arizona,
01:50:28 they lost to Princeton on Friday. This year I have a team playing on Thursday.
01:50:32 Wait, do the final four first. Don't just give us the national champion. Okay.
01:50:35 Auburn, North Carolina, Houston, Purdue. So three ones. And then Auburn's staying
01:50:46 on the Dickie V bracket. Three ones. Is that what they give you? He always does three ones
01:50:50 in like a two. I know Auburn's not a two. Yeah. They're what? A four? They're four.
01:50:54 Um, and then I have North Carolina versus Purdue. So you have the storyline of North Carolina
01:51:01 winning it in the same stadium that they won it last time in 2017. You're such a storyline slut.
01:51:07 I know. And then you have Purdue storyline. You just open up your mouth. You have Auburn beating
01:51:12 you glaze. I have Auburn beating Yukon because the last few years that number one overall seeds
01:51:16 lost in the sweet 16. I feel like everyone always has the number one overall seed going to the
01:51:20 final four. All right. What upset do you have? Big upset for first round. I have no threes losing,
01:51:26 but I have Charleston over Alabama and Vermont over Duke. Um, and deep runs. I have Drake in
01:51:34 the elite eight and I have Florida in the elite eight. I don't hate the Drake call.
01:51:37 Drake's really hot. I think Illinois and I was, well, his Dick is ill. So did you see that video,
01:51:44 Jake? I did. Yes. Oh, you did. You saw Drake's cock. Wow. Sure. I did not think that he would
01:51:50 have. Is there a chance that Drake can play against South Carolina? That'd be awesome. Yeah.
01:51:53 Drake beats the cocks again. Oh, national championship. Yeah. But yeah, the top left
01:51:59 region, the East, you have all the conference tournament champions, the top four seeds,
01:52:04 Yukon, Auburn, Iowa state, Illinois. And I had a note, I had a reminder for myself. I rarely set
01:52:10 reminders for myself last year after the first weekend I said, do not take more than one or two
01:52:15 conference tournament champions going deep because everyone on the recency bias. Um, so that's why I
01:52:20 have Yukon, uh, Iowa state and Illinois all not making the elite eight. Wow. Um, yeah. So that,
01:52:28 that was that. And I North Carolina winning the championship. Jake, why do you think they
01:52:32 fucked over the big East? I honestly don't know because in recent years they always threw over
01:52:37 the smaller schools and they let everyone from the mountain Westin. Yeah. Yeah. Six strong.
01:52:42 Do you recognize those teams? Big head? Which one? Mountain West team? No, I've never heard of
01:52:45 them. No. Uh, what did, what did, what did Frank say? Hold on. I got to find Frank. He had a,
01:52:50 he had a great tweet about the mountain West. I kind of see what Frank's saying about the
01:52:53 broadcast rights. Yeah. Mountain West broadcast, the CBS broadcasts, the mountain West, the
01:52:58 tournaments on a Turner. Um, and the big East is Fox, but yeah. So the biggest takeaways are I have
01:53:05 three ones. He's in the final four. However, I have Drake and Florida in the elite eight.
01:53:08 Okay. What about you guys? Uh, I have a pretty chalk fun. I did two ones, two twos. Yeah. I feel
01:53:14 like I really mixed it up there. You'll like mine. Uh, Jake, I went storylines. Oh, uh, Frank said,
01:53:19 so, uh, John Fanta said the big East just announced that this year's entire conference
01:53:23 tournament was a sellout. 19,812 came to all five sessions. Frank said, shh, don't tell the
01:53:30 committee. They're busy watching mountain West bore ball. Fucking got them. Yeah. Uh, I have the,
01:53:35 I, you'll love my final four cause it's the storyline. Uh, it is Yukon UNC Marquette Creighton.
01:53:41 Ooh, three out of four of the big East, the all, all three big East teams get to the final four
01:53:46 and show the selection committee was very stupid. I love that. Also, um,
01:53:50 I forgot what I was going to say. Okay. I also have Jamie, you go into the sweet 16, Jake. I
01:53:56 think that's a sharp pick on your part. Yeah. I mean the bottom right, the Midwest, it's all
01:54:00 the teams that choke in the tournament. So one of them has to break through it. Right.
01:54:04 Purdue in Tennessee, they always have like final four realistic expectations.
01:54:08 Crate. Kansas is there. No, but that's what I'm saying. Like of course, Kansas or Gonzaga is going
01:54:12 to end up winning the region because you can't really trust any other team. Yeah. Although they,
01:54:16 they kind of stay, but I have Purdue. Oh, I remember what I was going to say. Congratulations
01:54:20 to the Howard Wagner winner on beating UNC because that will be my trend of my champion being out day
01:54:24 one. Oh yeah. So you should take Howard Wagner winner money line. All right, Jake, give us your
01:54:28 first four. We actually didn't break down any of the first four I have because everyone despises
01:54:34 Virginia. I have them not only beating Colorado state, I have them beating Texas and going to the
01:54:37 round of 32. Yeah. They're going to make us watch more of them. Oh, that's going to be such a great
01:54:40 narrative game. Which one Virginia loses is like Virginia never should have been in. If Colorado
01:54:45 state loses, it'd be like Mount West sucks. He should be in. We just basically get to decide
01:54:50 what we want from that game. Yeah. But you can listen to the Mark Titus show for my full bracket,
01:54:55 but those are the big takeaways. Okay. All right. Well, good show boys. Uh, we will have Mark Titus
01:55:00 on on Wednesday to get deeper into brackets. Best time of year. Uh, let's do numbers. 12,
01:55:07 18, 40, but I feel like three, I'll go one for Villanova once he, once he'd know the 20 99 put
01:55:19 if it's 60, that would be bad. Yeah. Oh Shane, thanks for Keenan Allen, by the way.
01:55:28 Thanks for Keenan Allen. You want to say anything about that? Appreciate it. Shane
01:55:31 was very upset at me. Yeah. You want to say something, Shane?
01:55:35 What are we saying? Thanks for Keenan Allen. Fuck you. Okay.
01:55:41 23. MJ North Carolina, my national champion. Oh, there it is. Love you guys.
