The first round of NFL free agency is in the books. How are the Denver Broncos looking?
Transcript
00:00 It might be unpopular, but I high key love how the Broncos have attacked the offseason,
00:05 their approach to it, the players they've signed, the players they haven't signed, the
00:09 quarterbacks they haven't gone after.
00:11 And also, Chad, how they divvied up the Russell Wilson release, which became official yesterday
00:16 at the start of the new league year, post-June 1st release, taking the bigger hit in 2024
00:23 and a smaller hit in 2025.
00:25 I just really like the vision that Sean and George Payton have exhibited so far, and they
00:30 can put the cherry on top, in my opinion, by bypassing all these other quarterbacks,
00:35 rolling with Stidham until the draft, and then getting that guy and then going into
00:38 the season.
00:40 What do you suppose that means, that they chose the Broncos, they opted, and I'll break
00:44 it down for everybody, so on the dead money, the Broncos opted, according to Schefter,
00:52 to spread those hits thusly.
00:55 53 million dead this year, 2024, followed by another 32 million dead in 2025.
01:04 So in other words, they're taking it on the chin most, I mean both years, they're taking
01:10 it on the chin.
01:12 But they're going to absorb the biggest brunt of it this year.
01:15 How do you interpret that?
01:17 I interpret it as George and Sean probably saying to themselves, listen, it's going to
01:21 be a transitional year, probably with a rookie quarterback starting at some point, but they're
01:26 looking at the long term, and that's what I appreciate, Chad, that's why I'm encouraged.
01:29 It's really not about '24, it's about '25, '26, and beyond.
01:33 So next offseason, this time next year, they're set up to have about $100 million in salary
01:39 cap space, and then mostly free from the Russell Wilson release.
