00:00 Hello there, Connor Gormley here, a trainee reporter for Sussex World and this is today's
00:04 News Bulletin where I talk you through all the biggest stories across both East and West
00:09 Sussex today.
00:11 Essential repair works have started on Eastbourne Beach this week. It's expected to take place
00:15 for around a week and the District Council has said works will start early each morning
00:19 to ensure they are completed on time. They've also apologised to residents for potential
00:24 noise pollution while the essential works take place.
00:29 Trainees from all over Sussex took part in the prestigious British Pie Awards last weekend
00:33 with some bringing home top prizes. Bob Noriega's bakery Turner's Pies, which made headlines
00:38 after managing director and local lad Phil Turner signed up for The Apprentice, won top
00:42 prize across three categories including meat and potato pie, vegan pie and dessert pie.
00:49 Turner's Pies were closely followed by Midhurst business Mud Foods which came runner-up in
00:53 two categories and several of their products were awarded the gold standard by the competition's
00:58 fleet of judges.
01:00 Meanwhile in Horsham, residents are speaking out over the increasing numbers of potholes
01:04 on the District's roads. They say Curves Lane, New Street, St Leonard's Road, Brighton
01:08 Road, Beach Road, Forest Road, Church Road and several roads in Southwater are particularly
01:13 bad and some drivers have had to pay out hundreds in repairs with claims for compensation supposedly
01:19 turned down by West Sussex County Council.
01:22 A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said the poor state of the roads is in part
01:28 down to the extreme weather over the last year. They explained that weather fluctuations
01:32 make road surfaces expand, contract and then expand again causing cracks to form. Between
01:38 planned preventative measures and increased numbers of repair units, they added that the
01:41 council is doing everything possible to maintain the roads in the area.
