00:00 Well, let's talk to entertainment journalist and film critic Karen Krasanovic.
00:04 Great to see you again, Karen.
00:06 Now, look, this was a year of Oscars firsts, wins for Christopher Nolan, for Cillian Murphy,
00:11 for Robert Downey Jr., for Godzilla.
00:14 And I've just realized that all of those I've mentioned are men.
00:17 [laughter]
00:19 It's Godzilla. I'm not sure about Godzilla.
00:22 Yes, yes, well, it was going to be a great night, I was hoping, personally, for Lily Gladstone,
00:28 who would have been the first Native American winner of an Oscar.
00:33 And it didn't happen, because Emma Stone got her second one.
00:37 So it was a first for Davine Randolph for her role in The Holdovers, so that was lovely.
00:45 And, you know, there were a lot of people below the line as well,
00:49 with the designers and the set decorators and makeup.
00:52 So there were women in there, but just not in that list.
00:57 In terms of what really stood out on the night, can we talk about Ryan Gosling's number?
01:04 Or do you think he was upstaged by this dog?
01:09 No, I mean, Messy wasn't supposed to be there.
01:11 That's the dog from The Anatomy of a Fall, whose name was Snoop in the movie.
01:15 He's got blue eyes. He's quite startling looking.
01:18 And somebody had fake paws, and they were sort of popping them together as if they were clapping.
01:23 But no, I think nothing can compare to Ryan Gosling's take, which is straight from Marilyn Monroe.
01:30 What is it? I think it's Gentleman--oh, not Gentleman for Blondes.
01:35 I think that's from the movie. It's Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend.
01:39 Straight from that, Busby Berkeley. It was one of the best--in fact, I'm still singing it in my head.
01:45 It was one of the best numbers of the evening, and if you watch it, it's just delightful.
01:50 But no big surprises. I mean, do you think all of these winners were worthy winners?
01:55 It was a very--I don't want to say worthy year. That sounds wrong.
01:59 But it was a big year. This was a year that any of those films would have been winners in any other year.
02:06 But because of the pandemic, we're still recovering from that, cinemographically, and also the strikes.
02:14 Everybody was holding their strongest films to be released now.
02:18 So this is an exceptional year, and every single one of those films nominated really in other years would have won.
02:25 So, yes.
02:26 But, Karen, what about the fashion? I mean, I wonder, are you going to be wearing a peplum or something sheer
02:31 with some carefully placed rhinestones, maybe some dramatic sleeves?
02:36 Oh, yeah, absolutely, yes. I'm going to dress like poor things for Halloween.
02:41 I mean, extraordinary designs. I mean, even Napoleon had spectacular--I mean, beautiful.
02:48 Many, many, many dresses. I mean, the amount of work that goes into these films, just designing them,
02:54 not only costume, but also makeup, hair, you know, set design, location work, is extraordinary.
03:02 And think of all the different shades of pink that Barbie had to use so they didn't clash.
03:07 I mean, it really is an exceptional year, and if somebody sits back and says,
03:12 "Oh, there's nothing I want to see in these nominations," I would say, "Go to the big screen and try again."
03:19 I was talking about the red carpet, but I'll take that.
03:22 Oh, you were talking, too?
03:23 Yes.
03:24 Karen, thank you very much.
03:26 There's the red carpet and then the after party for giving--
03:31 And it was pretty good. Thank you so much. Always great chatting to you.
03:34 - Thank you.
