00:00 20 drivers then all trying to get out of Q1, out of Q2 and somewhere near the front of the grid
00:06 and the light is green and qualifying is go. Two runs on this same set of tyres and you're going
00:11 to be fuelled just that little bit more. Your car's going to be heavier and that might affect
00:15 your pace. Here's Nikko HĂ„konbo right behind the Williams on that low car. It's almost like they're racing.
00:24 Oh, Sidney is another car to get some of the scene as well. Just compounds Nikko HĂ„konbo's frustration.
00:32 Just a touch there. I would imagine the stewards would want to have a look at that.
00:35 Straight in and impeded behind the Williams. Can't improve on his time. Valtteri Kvotas goes 11th fastest.
00:42 Whoa! We're back on board with Oskar Piastri and I dare say he might have made contact with the wall there.
00:47 The wall that cost Max Verstappen a chance at pole here. Once upon a time Piastri's kept going
00:53 and set the fastest time of a 1.28.7 but did he bang the wall and by the looks of his tyres if he did
01:01 he only glanced it. I think he might have got away with it. He's dragged Ghazly across the line.
01:06 Using car number 38 which Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel both used the number 38 when
01:12 they made their first appearances at an F1 weekend as Friday drivers and oh coming out of that final
01:20 corner let the tail wag just a little bit. He's the driver at risk officially at the moment but
01:24 this is going to be a faster time. Olly Behrman goes fourth fastest and ahead of his teammate
01:29 Charles Leclerc who'll be starting I'm sure another flying lap soon.
01:32 Behrman with a hot stop and not refueling indicates that he would have had more fuel on that first run.
01:40 Ogerman smacks the kerb coming out of 22 there. Watch the underside of the car. The floor takes a whack
01:48 but that energy goes up the driver's spine. Daniel Ricciardo who could do with a bit more pace in the
01:54 RV. Leclerc has aborted his run. He thought there was too much traffic there. Verstappen's going faster than
01:59 anybody else. Behrman he was compromised. I think there was a whole gaggle of cars there. Alonso,
02:05 Leclerc, Albon, Behrman all into that last corner and that would have compromised his tyre temperature
02:10 for the first sector of the lap as we see the RV bouncing across that kerb again. Yeah we're by
02:17 the beach. You don't want to get beached. Sergio Perez goes third fastest and he would have scraped
02:22 that floor all the way across the kerb. Daniel Ricciardo and it would have lost him time too.
02:26 His teammate Yuki Tsunoda is improving. Verstappen with a 1.28.1 sets the pace.
02:31 Tenth and a half clear of Charles Leclerc. Then Perez, Alonso and Russell. Piastri is pitted
02:36 as Lance Scholz sets the fastest middle sector. Ricciardo goes 11th fastest but they're queuing up
02:41 behind him. Descendant tumbling down the timing standings and one of those is Yuki Tsunoda.
02:46 Ricciardo now 12th. Tsunoda into the top nine. Lance Stroll is on a bit of a flyer here for
02:52 Aston Martin. Brilliant middle sector. Oliver Behrman's had an issue properly. He's aborted.
02:57 I think this final run or he's made a mistake somewhere so... It's going to be okay and I think
03:02 he'll be into Q2. Stroll goes second fastest. A bit like Bahrain where we see Lance Stroll right
03:08 at the end of the session putting in a storming lap. Ocon's not out of qualifying for the second
03:12 weekend running. It's a Q1 exit for Esteban Ocon. Did Joe Granulho get to the flag in time? He didn't.
03:20 He's out. Yeah he was the first car across the chequered flag actually so he just just missed out
03:25 by a matter of seconds to get in that car over the line. Valtteri Bottas is continuing on his way
03:31 but into the pits. He's going to be out of qualifying as well. Logan Sargent we know is
03:37 out of qualifying. That is the bottom five all decided. I've seen a yellow flag come up so it might be a
03:42 driver tracker issue. Let's just let's wait and see but let's follow George Russell. He has stopped. He has
03:47 stopped. He has absolutely stopped at turn eight and no yellow flags. We're at turn 16 further on
03:54 with George Russell. There are... He's still stranded there as the Clare goes past.
04:01 We'll pick up George Russell here. So basically you were right Karun Chandhok.
04:04 I've lost my power. I've lost my power. Something's wrong.
04:08 Oh dear. So whatever the slingshot might have achieved down the main straight it has not helped
04:17 Nico HĂŒlkenberg who I think might have just pulled off into a safe place. Yeah I find it. Yeah if that
04:23 must be the case he must have pulled off into a run-off area because it's very rare not to see a
04:27 the yellow flag. But anyway George Russell so he did a 28.749 Crofty in Q1. Now the yellow flag
04:34 comes out. Russell improves his time by about a tenth and a half and so it's come out in sector one.
04:41 So here we are. Nico HĂŒlkenberg stopped by the track. You can see why there are yellow flags. He's
04:46 pulled away as far as he can but he's still very much in an area that is unsafe without being
04:53 policed by yellows. I don't know why these yellow flags weren't being thrown. Okay we need to switch
04:58 off the car. Switch off the engine Nico. Switch off. Switch off. Well that was a bit of a mess.
05:07 Well that wasn't the procedure that you would normally have. That has to be said. We've had
05:12 two red flags in races here before and restarts. We've had plenty of red flags in qualifying as
05:18 well. Here's the latest red flag for this. So we see down the straight here. Here's the
05:24 sling shot. The slipstream and the tow that Haas were perfecting and got absolutely right
05:30 as Nico blast past. But in about seven corners time he's going to loop out. It sounded flat
05:39 there as well on soft finish stage. Yeah it didn't sound to me on soft finish.
05:47 It's almost like it's not in gear properly. He's changing gear but he's vibrating the car.
05:58 I think the power's coming in and out intermittently. There's some sort of an issue but even on the
06:02 soft finish straight it didn't sound right. It didn't sound to me like it was accelerating the
06:07 way you'd expect. Three minutes to go here. Olly Behrman 11th fastest. The projected knockout time
06:14 1.28.7 plus or minus two tenths. That's that 1.25 again that I was talking about.
06:20 Behrman obviously is going to have to go again. I would imagine he's fuelled for two flying laps
06:26 so that shouldn't be a problem. Yeah let's have a look. This is the 22 understeer.
06:31 It just went again just in a bit hot. Got wide on that kerb. The car bounced up and that would
06:38 have compromised his ability to pick up the power. Oh did he kiss the wall on the right hand side on
06:44 the way in? Might have done. That might have just again hurt his run and the run to the final corner.
06:51 So yeah coming off the RB here comes Alex Albon for what's his final flying lap in Q2. Is it anywhere
06:58 near the top 10? No he's three tenths down. 12th fastest only for Alex Albon who well a bit
07:04 disappointing I'm sure for him but better than his two previous qualifying appearances here at
07:10 the Gieda Street Circuit. Daniel Ricciardo out on the track as we can see. Meanwhile George Russell
07:15 has just aced the middle sector with the fastest we've seen so far and Piastri goes ahead of Norris.
07:20 Fourth fastest overall and only two and a half tenths off Max Verstappen. Ricciardo has not improved
07:25 on his personal best in the first sector. Behrman has improved on a personal best. Snitch behind
07:31 Sunoda at the moment. Sunoda in fact is nearly four tenths ahead of the other RB that we're
07:37 watching here of Daniel Ricciardo on the current time sheet. George Russell has gone fifth fastest.
07:43 As don't forget Yuki Sunoda out qualifying Daniel Ricciardo last week in Bahrain 2 and then we had
07:49 all the messy team orders chat throughout the race. So George Russell goes fifth fastest as you said.
07:56 Max Verstappen with the 1.28.0 and right on the cusp here is Oli Behrman of trying to get into Q3
08:02 and his first ever qualifying appearance. He's in the Ferrari. We'll pick him up in a moment as
08:08 Ricciardo makes it to the line, sees the checkered flag, doesn't improve on that 14th. All eyes now
08:14 on the 18 year old from Chelmsford. Youngest Ferrari driver ever. Has Oli Behrman got the pace to get
08:21 into the top 10? Not quite there. 36 thousandths shy of Lewis Hamilton. So it's a great effort to be 36
08:30 thousandths behind Lewis Hamilton. That's a cracking effort from Oli Behrman on his first
08:36 ever qualifying. Yuki Sunoda has improved and got into Q3 in the RB Crofty. A 28.5.
08:42 This is the part of 2019, a half a second for Yuki Sunoda. Yeah and some bit of consolation for Yuki
08:49 Sunoda who missed qualifying three in Bahrain by seven thousandths of a second. Hamilton backed off
08:55 on his lap as soon as the news was related that Oli Behrman hadn't quite improved.
08:59 They're gonna have to find something for Q3 at Mercedes because Lewis Hamilton's through. Real
09:11 shame for Oli Behrman. That is a terrific effort though. Holbein F2 wakes up this morning to be
09:16 told he's driving an F1 car and he makes it to P11. I'm just gonna say I predicted he'd be 12th.
09:23 I predicted 9th. You predicted 12th and somewhere in the middle as ever was reality ladies and
09:31 gentlemen. Oli Behrman 11th, Alex Albon 12th, Kevin Magnussen 13th, Daniel Ricciardo 14th and Nico Holkenberg 15th
09:39 because he never got a lap in because of that power issue problem. That was a good lap. Good sector.
09:47 Good sector. That's the last corner before we exit. Sorry. Sorry. The two Mercedes are the first two cars.
09:55 They flash past our commentary box. There is Lewis Hamilton. They're gonna be the first two to set the
10:00 benchmark on this final set of tyres. As you said everybody on a new set now. Just under six tenths
10:06 of a second cover the top 10 in Q2. If we can repeat that we'll be the closest top 10 in Grand Prix
10:12 history and if they're all on new tyres I dare say we might get the chance to do that but let's follow
10:17 Lewis Hamilton's progress then as he threads his way through the ever snaking, ever winding, ever
10:24 fast and furious first part of this lap and gets to the end of the first sector and a long way down.
10:31 Six tenths in just the first sector. Let's have a look at what Russell can do. He's been a couple
10:35 of tenths quicker so far this weekend but he's slow. Russell's had a good sector there. That's, this
10:40 is gonna be the end for him. George Russell I think might just be backing off a little bit here
10:45 because Lando Norris has passed him already and Norris just a tenth off the pace to the first
10:50 sector. 31.8 for Lando Norris. That was decent. 31.9 for his teammate Oscar Piastri. Hamilton
10:59 now seven and a bit tenths off the pace. The Mercedes not finding it on these final runs here.
11:03 The white flags showing that there's cars that are going slowly on the track and warning them
11:08 there's faster cars approaching here. That faster car is Lewis Hamilton at the fastest point on this
11:14 sector, on this track I should say. Alonso keeps out of the way and now very cunning indeed from
11:20 Fernando Alonso gets a beautiful tow down the main straight behind Lewis Hamilton who finishes his
11:26 lap only seventh fastest but Hamilton might just have given his former teammate a great shout of a
11:32 front row here. He's not stupid Fernando Alonso, he's a wily old fox here. Norris and Piastri on laps
11:38 here. Norris so far quicker in the first two sectors but not a great final sector. Goes fourth
11:43 fastest. Piastri is coming out of the final corner now. Let's see what he can do as he runs up to the
11:49 line. I think Russell by the way could have time to go again as Piastri does beat Norris for the
11:55 second year in a row here in Jeddah. Right so Oscar Piastri goes fourth while that's happening.
12:00 Max Verstappen crosses the line and who's right behind him? George Russell coming into the pits.
12:05 I thought for a minute he might be trying to pick up a tow but Russell has pitted and there are green
12:10 sectors everywhere on the track at the moment for those cars that are trying to fly to the
12:15 chequered flag. Tsunoda only ninth fastest. Leclerc two tenths off the pace. Here comes Sergio PĂ©rez
12:21 on the best middle sector. PĂ©rez on the front row currently. It won't be three poles in a row
12:26 for him. Max Verstappen with a 1.27.4 looks to have pole position in the back but could
12:32 Charles Leclerc or Fernando Alonso try and deny him here in Jeddah tonight? Leclerc onto the front row
12:40 once again. He's on a run of six consecutive. Front rows make that seven unless he can be denied
12:46 by Fernando Alonso and here comes Alonso. Not his first rodeo. Got a great tow behind Lewis Hamilton.
12:52 Where's it going to put him? He's on the second row. Did his best but in the end has to settle for P4
12:58 for Fernando Alonso. His teammate Lance Stroll crosses the line. Only P10 for him and it is pole
13:05 position for the first time ever here in Jeddah for the championship leader and defending champion
13:11 Max Verstappen.
