00:00 "Come on, talk."
00:02 "I said talk to me, damn it!"
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the freakiest
00:09 and most traumatizing scenes from the Child's Play franchise.
00:12 "And now, it's time to play."
00:14 Number 20.
00:17 Charles transfers his soul.
00:19 Child's Play.
00:20 "Give it up, Ray! It's over!"
00:22 When you think of the Child's Play franchise,
00:24 you undoubtedly think of Chucky running around and killing people.
00:28 But the series opens with a different type of scare.
00:31 Brad Dourif appears in person as Charles Lee Ray,
00:34 a serial killer on the run from Detective Mike Norris.
00:37 Ray is shot by Norris and transfers his soul into a good guy doll
00:42 using a nasty bit of black magic.
00:44 It's a well-directed sequence,
00:46 with Dourif's creepy chanting accented by the booms and flashes of lightning.
00:56 The scene sets a suitably moody atmosphere
00:59 and gives a quick, easy reason for the living doll.
01:03 It's a great intro to a great series.
01:05 Number 19.
01:14 Chucky fries Jill.
01:16 Curse of Chucky.
01:16 "There he goes!"
01:18 "I am not in the mood for this."
01:21 Following a bizarre and divisive swerve into black comedy,
01:24 the Child's Play franchise got back to its horror roots
01:27 with 2013's Curse of Chucky.
01:29 The first person on Chucky's hit list is Jill,
01:32 the live-in nanny of young Alice.
01:34 Jill is talking to her girlfriend Barb when Chucky appears,
01:38 a horribly malicious look plastered on his plastic face.
01:41 He proceeds to fry Jill with a bucket of rainwater and a power socket.
01:45 The results are grisly and grotesque,
01:48 and that look on Chucky's face will replay in our nightmares forever.
01:52 Chucky is so back.
01:54 [Sounds of Chucky's back being ripped off]
02:02 Number 18.
02:03 Warren becomes Pinhead.
02:05 Bride of Chucky.
02:06 "Ugh."
02:06 "Now!"
02:13 Pinhead, Chucky.
02:15 Two horror icons briefly converge in Bride of Chucky via John Ritter's Warren Kincaid.
02:20 Warren becomes another victim of Chucky and Tiffany,
02:23 with the former sending a ton of nails into the police chief's face.
02:27 Unfortunately, this does not kill him right away,
02:33 and he later makes a great jump scare when he barges out of the van's storage compartment.
02:37 It's even enough to scare Chucky and Tiffany, and that's saying something.
02:41 However, Chucky is quick to respond and stabs Warren multiple times in the back.
02:47 It's a brutally violent and disturbing death,
02:50 even for the standards set by this series.
02:52 "Why does that look so familiar?"
02:55 Number 17.
02:56 Miss Kettlewell's lesson.
02:58 Child's Play 2.
02:59 "You've been very naughty, Miss Kettlewell."
03:05 And speaking of brutally violent deaths, how about poor Miss Kettlewell?
03:10 Chucky pays a visit to Andy's teacher as she's giving the young boy detention.
03:14 Popping out of the storage closet,
03:16 Chucky stabs Kettlewell with an air pump and proceeds to beat her to death with a meter stick.
03:21 It's certainly not the way we'd want to go,
03:23 and the horrific death is depicted through some great direction.
03:27 The puppeteering on Chucky is fantastic,
03:30 especially as he approaches Kettlewell with the meter stick,
03:33 and the creepy music adds a frightening dimension to the sequence.
03:36 "Andy, what's this all about?"
03:37 "Chucky followed me to school. He tried to get me again, so I ran home."
03:42 Number 16.
03:43 Andy and Chucky.
03:44 Cult of Chucky.
03:46 Curse of Chucky ends with a great bit of fan service,
03:48 with Alex Vincent reappearing as Andy after 23 years.
03:52 "Play with this."
03:55 While it was just a quick cameo, his story continues in Cult of Chucky,
03:59 with Andy being rather unkind to his old tormentor.
04:03 Well, do you blame him?
04:04 Andy is keeping Chucky's disfigured head in a safe,
04:08 and he brings it out on occasion to tease the living doll.
04:11 The whole sequence is rather troubling,
04:13 with Chucky's gaping head wound proving horribly disgusting.
04:16 "Face it, Andy. I'm all you got."
04:19 But however disgusting it is,
04:22 it's still a great piece of practical effects work.
04:25 The scene also packs a great jump scare,
04:27 with Chucky lunging at Andy after taking a hit from his joint.
04:31 "It's just me and you again tonight, pal."
04:33 Number 15.
04:34 Chucky visits the hospital.
04:36 Child's Play.
04:36 The first Child's Play is very effective at blending tension with the typical slasher thrills,
04:44 and that is exemplified by the great hospital sequence.
04:48 "But Dr. Chucky's here, and he's going to kill me."
04:52 Andy is taken to a psychiatric hospital,
04:55 which is an effective story beat that keeps the young boy trapped in place.
04:59 The movie mines a great deal of tension from the scenario,
05:02 as Andy watches Chucky approach while remaining completely powerless to stop him.
05:07 The killer doll later breaks in and chases Andy throughout the hospital.
05:10 It's a great cat-and-mouse sequence that's aided by some eerie visuals,
05:14 a spooky score, and naturally, a great jump scare.
05:17 Number 14.
05:24 Chucky Comes Alive.
05:25 Bride of Chucky.
05:26 This movie introduces Tiffany Valentine,
05:40 the titular Bride of Chucky who aids her lover in his quest for blood.
05:44 In one of the film's most effective sequences,
05:46 Tiffany handcuffs Damien to the bed and places Chucky on her unsuspecting ex's chest.
05:52 But when Damien makes an unfortunate comment about Chucky's...
05:55 manhood, the doll comes alive and shows the goth who's boss.
06:00 Chucky goes full exorcist and spins his head 180 degrees to face Damien,
06:05 which is a startling visual on its own.
06:07 But it only gets worse from there,
06:09 with Chucky using Damien's facial piercings as a makeshift weapon of sorts.
06:14 "It ain't the size that counts, asshole."
06:16 We can't watch it without squirming.
06:18 Number 13.
06:31 Ian Watches the Nanny Cam.
06:32 Curse of Chucky.
06:34 "Hey Barb, check this out. Radio Shack. 450 bucks.
06:39 Oh and by the way, if you're watching this, I put it on your MasterCard."
06:43 Ian has placed a hidden camera inside Chucky to spy on his cheating wife,
06:48 and he later tries to use this hidden camera against Nika to prove that she's the killer.
06:53 But he gets a dose of reality in the worst way possible.
06:57 Ian switches to the camera's live feed,
06:59 which shows Chucky slowly approaching him from behind.
07:02 Ian realizes what's happening, but it's already far too late.
07:05 It's a fun scene filled with effective tension,
07:13 and the camera gimmick helps make this one of the most creative death scenes in the franchise.
07:17 Number 12.
07:24 Acid to the Face.
07:26 Seed of Chucky.
07:31 This installment goes into full-on camp territory,
07:34 and what better way to celebrate than a cameo by John Waters.
07:38 Waters is a famous director responsible for some of the most beloved camp,
07:42 including Pink Flamingos, the first in his infamous Trash trilogy.
07:46 Waters plays Pete Peters, a paparazzo who meets a very nasty and rather gooey fate.
07:52 Glenn tries to warn Pete about Chucky's impending attack,
07:57 but the doll scares the photographer and he bumps into a rack holding sulfuric acid.
08:01 The acid then falls off the rack straight onto Pete's head,
08:09 melting half of his face.
08:11 It's one of the series' nastiest visual effects,
08:14 and we're forced to watch the melting process in all its hideous detail.
08:18 Number 11.
08:26 Stalking Maggie.
08:27 Child's Play.
08:27 Much like the hospital sequence,
08:39 Maggie's death is full of slow and unbearable tension.
08:42 She is Chucky's first victim,
08:44 and her death is drawn out to an almost painful but still wickedly entertaining degree.
08:49 Maggie becomes paranoid and slowly makes her way through the apartment,
08:53 having heard a series of strange noises.
08:56 [Scream]
08:56 Meanwhile, we're given some beautiful point-of-view shots
09:03 as Chucky stalks her and prepares for the killing.
09:06 It's a highly effective sequence,
09:08 utilizing silence, creative camera angles, and relaxed pacing to build tension.
09:12 And when the violence does come, it comes hard and it comes loud.
09:16 What a way to start Chucky's body count.
09:19 Number 10.
09:25 Waterbed, Bride of Chucky.
09:27 Dolls have to get creative with their kills.
09:30 After two con artists steal Jesse and Jade's money,
09:33 Chucky and Tiffany follow them back to their hotel room
09:35 and watch them getting busy on a waterbed.
09:37 Their glimpse of Tiffany in the ceiling mirror comes too late.
09:40 Using a champagne bottle, Tiffany shatters the mirror,
09:47 and all the couple can do is scream as they're showered in glass.
09:52 This method of death was so unique and so impactful,
09:55 that director Don Mancini decided to recreate it for Cult of Chucky,
09:59 only with much more graphic results.
10:01 Number 9.
10:02 Doll's Eyes, Child's Play 2.
10:05 Of all the ways we want to go,
10:07 having doll eyes stabbed into our face is probably near the bottom of the list.
10:12 In the climax of Child's Play 2,
10:13 a factory technician investigates broken machinery,
10:16 crawling right beneath the mechanism that attaches the doll's eyes.
10:20 Director John Lafia expertly builds tension,
10:22 as Chucky creeps closer and closer.
10:25 Subverting expectations however,
10:27 the technician emerges with a satisfied smile,
10:30 only to have Chucky slice his face
10:32 and send him back beneath the mechanism he just activated.
10:35 The image of the dead technician with doll eyes is pure nightmare fuel.
10:41 Number 8.
10:42 Madeline's Mouth, Cult of Chucky.
10:45 Cult of Chucky is far gorier than its predecessors,
10:48 a fact that's clearly evident in Madeline's utterly disgusting death scene.
10:52 When her good guy doll returns from the grave,
10:58 the guilt-ridden Madeline allows it to kill her.
11:00 Promising that it will hurt,
11:02 the doll proceeds to stick its entire freaking arm down her throat.
11:05 It then pulls out something from her mouth and looks at it with pure elation.
11:10 It is a horribly grotesque death,
11:12 and the eerie music combined with the doll's terrifying facial expressions,
11:16 make this an incredibly dark and unsettling sequence.
11:19 And just when you thought the franchise had veered too far into comedy.
11:23 Number 7.
11:24 Haircut, Child's Play 3.
11:26 Child's Play 3 is often considered the worst movie of the series,
11:30 but it does have its fair share of spooky scenes.
11:32 Case in point, the famous barbershop sequence,
11:37 where the military barber decides to give Chucky a haircut.
11:41 Why? We have no idea, but just go with it.
11:44 Character motivations aside,
11:45 it is a tense sequence,
11:47 especially as the camera slowly pans to Chucky's deceptively still face,
11:51 while the music gradually builds.
11:53 Then he slits the barber's throat,
11:58 cracks a silly one-liner,
11:59 and laughs that brilliant Chucky laugh.
12:01 It's all a little silly,
12:05 but it's easily the most unique scene in Child's Play 3.
12:08 Number 6.
12:10 Alice meets Chucky, Curse of Chucky.
12:13 Curse of Chucky helped bring the franchise back to its horror roots,
12:16 after the wacky seed of Chucky.
12:18 And this change of tone was evident from the start.
12:20 After young Alice senses something behind the shower curtain,
12:23 she slowly approaches before pulling the curtain back
12:26 and unveiling the freakiest Chucky we've ever seen.
12:28 There's something horribly disturbing about Chucky's expression of false innocence,
12:38 with his bulging manic eyes and fixed smile.
12:42 Alice at least is fooled and delighted,
12:44 until the doll suddenly reaches for her.
12:46 Welcome back Chucky, we missed you.
12:51 Number 5.
12:52 Chucky's disfigured face, Child's Play 3.
12:55 We love seeing the sadistic doll get beaten up,
12:58 and Child's Play 3 features what's easily the most twisted Chucky injury.
13:02 Just when Chucky is about to kill Tyler,
13:08 an animatronic scythe swings down and slices half of Chucky's face off.
13:12 We then get to see the inside of his face,
13:18 complete with tendons and moving muscles.
13:20 It's highly detailed makeup work,
13:23 perhaps even the best in the series,
13:24 and Brad Dourif's anguished screams cut right to the bone.
13:28 Of all his different looks,
13:30 we think Two-Face Chucky is the scariest of all.
13:32 Number 4.
13:34 Strangling Mattson, Child's Play 2.
13:37 It's everyone's worst nightmare.
13:39 You're driving when you realize there's someone in the back seat.
13:41 Oh and that someone is a murderous possessed doll.
13:47 Child's Play 2 started off with a bang,
13:50 with Chucky pulling a gun on Play Pals executive Mattson.
13:53 Chucky toys with him at first,
13:59 shooting him with water to relieve the tension,
14:01 but it's just a fake out.
14:03 Once Mattson looks into the rearview mirror,
14:05 Chucky strangles him with a plastic bag,
14:07 while lightning flashes and rain pounds on the roof.
14:10 Just goes to show,
14:16 slasher scenes don't always need blood and gore to be terrifying.
14:19 Number 3.
14:21 Burned Chucky, Child's Play.
14:23 Like most classic slasher villains,
14:25 Chucky never stays dead.
14:33 The end of Child's Play is a relentless gauntlet of hope and despair,
14:37 as Chucky seems to die over and over again,
14:39 only to come back meaner and stronger than ever before.
14:43 The first false death comes when Andy burns Chucky in the fireplace.
14:47 Everything seems well and good until Andy is tripped by a horribly burnt Chucky,
14:51 who stalks towards him holding a knife.
14:53 It's arguably the most haunting shot of the series,
14:58 with Chucky's melted face the stuff of nightmares.
15:01 Number 2.
15:02 Discovering Chucky's Scars, Curse of Chucky.
15:06 Curse of Chucky is arguably the best installment in the series since Child's Play,
15:09 with a terrific blend of deep dread and visceral thrills.
15:13 While looking for Alice in the attic,
15:15 Barb comes across Chucky,
15:16 and curiously picks at the fake skin on his face,
15:19 revealing the scars hidden beneath.
15:21 It is an excellent piece of fan service,
15:23 as we finally see Chucky's signature scars again,
15:26 but it's also a terrifying sequence that riddles viewers with anxiety and foreboding.
15:31 We know that Chucky is going to reveal himself,
15:33 we just don't know when.
15:35 A gold medal to the person who can watch this scene without flinching
15:38 or putting their fingers in front of their eyes.
15:41 - "You have your mother's eyes."

15:57 Number 1.
15:59 No batteries.
16:00 Child's Play.
16:01 A lot of people have a fear of dolls.
16:03 Now just imagine if a doll turned its head 180 degrees
16:07 and spoke to you without having batteries installed.
16:10 That's exactly what happens to Andy's mom Karen,
16:12 and it is easily the scariest moment in the Chucky-verse.
16:15 - "Hi, I'm Chucky, wanna play?"
16:18 - "Ahh!"
16:18 The way the scene slowly builds uneasiness,
16:23 the sudden head-butt of Chucky,
16:25 the suddenly loud doll voice,
16:27 and the abnormally loud doll voice,
16:29 all combine to create an instantly memorable and chilling moment.
16:33 It sums up just what makes Chucky so uncanny,
16:36 and how he's remained so scary and relevant throughout the years.
