00:00 - My name is Elia Kazan. Every one of you, when you were kids, sat at the feet of your grandmother or grandfather, your favorite uncle or your dearest aunt, your father in a moment of relaxation, or in your earliest memory of all, your mother, and were told of family stories. All of us have these family legends, and every American family without exception has one particular legend, the one which tells of how the family first came to this land.
00:29 We were all in a broad view of time, once somewhere else, and we all came here. So we share the great adventure of this country, how we came here, and we all know one great song, the one which tells of why we came here.
00:47 I was born in Turkey of Greek parents. At the turn of the century, my family came here. This is the adventure of my family, and I took it in with my mother's milk.
00:59 Two years ago, I made a book of these adventures. I called it America, America. Many of you have read it. And now I've made the film America, America, which will be coming to this screen soon.
01:12 To play the leading role, we have an actor new to motion pictures, and his personal experience bears a close relation to that of the boy he plays.
01:22 When I first met him, he couldn't speak English, but like the Stavros of my story, he wanted to get to America. I turned him down in Greece. He arrived in New York City with 35 cents in his pocket.
01:35 I still didn't think he could do the part, but finally he convinced me. I think he'll convince you too. This new actor's name is Stathis Yalilis. Some people wanted to change it, but Stathis said no.
01:49 He's a young man of considerable determination, and determination is the essence of Stavros. Stavros who set out from a medieval world of domes and minarets, of veiled women and human beasts of burden, for the 20th century America.
02:05 His Odyssey is the story we tell. Such an Odyssey is not told just in miles, but in people. The grandmother who put a knife in his hand, and the father who trusted him with a family fortune.
02:16 The mother who demanded courage from him, the friend who gave him his name. Abdul the bandit who robbed him, and the street girl who nursed him back to life.
02:25 The cousin who made him a slave, and the bride who gave him back his promise. The longshoreman who gave him his wisdom, and the rich woman who bought him for a pet. All these make the story of Stavros, the boy they called America, America.
