00:00 An AEW original suspended, John Cena talks his planned heel turn, Paul Heyman's going
00:06 into the Hall of Fame and more.
00:08 I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:19 Unfortunately over the years, when you read a story that contains the words Jeff Hardy
00:23 and 'suspended', you might assume the Enigma is the one on leave.
00:29 But according to Fightful Select, this time Jeff Hardy is the literally injured party,
00:34 and it's AEW original Sammy Guevara who's been suspended.
00:38 So here is the strange history of Guevara and the Hardys in AEW.
00:43 Jeff has had a cursed run in AEW since he debuted on the 9th March 2022, reuniting the
00:50 Hardy Boys with his brother Matt, where they would go on to beat the Young Bucks at Double
00:54 or Nothing, reportedly positioning them for a tag team title run.
00:58 But despite early promise, and the Bucks and Hardys having a classic feud back in 2017
01:04 Ring of Honor, that Double or Nothing match was a disaster.
01:08 It kept falling apart because Jeff had suffered a terrible concussion that left him "almost
01:13 knocked out" according to Matt.
01:15 And a month later, on the 14th June, just three months into his run, AEW announced that
01:21 Jeff was indefinitely suspended without pay after he was arrested for DUI.
01:27 Jeff returned in April 2023, but he was never pushed to the extent of his debuting months.
01:33 Instead, the Hardy Boys were booked in a feud that is the polar opposite of going for the
01:37 tag team titles.
01:41 Wrestling the Firm.
01:45 After nine months of practically just wrestling on Rampage, Jeff's 2024 resolution appeared
01:50 to be "get a main roster push".
01:53 He confessed on Matt Hardy's podcast that he felt like a ghost in AEW, and he even posted
01:58 on his Instagram "We the Hardyz will not be appearing on this live show called AEW
02:04 Dynamite.
02:05 We the Hardyz are stuck in the dimension of AEW Rampage."
02:10 Whether it was a shoot, a work, or a work shoot, Shooty McWorkface, Much Love, HH Kiss,
02:16 Jeff started to get treatment similar to when he first came into AEW.
02:20 He had a fantastic match against Darby Allin on the 17th January Rampage.
02:25 Then the following week, he got his first singles match on Dynamite since 2023's match
02:30 of the year, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch, on the 16th August.
02:35 Jeff put on a great showing against Swerve Strictland, and also put over Jon Moxley on
02:39 Dynamite the week after that.
02:41 But then on the 14th February Rampage taping for an episode that would air two days later,
02:46 Hardy got another singles match.
02:48 This time, under no DQ rules, against Sammy Guevara.
02:53 And that's where the suspension comes in.
02:55 The news of an injury to Jeff came out as soon as it happened.
02:59 Guevara hit a shooting star press, but his knee connected hard with Jeff's face.
03:04 The referee Paul Turner started talking to the ringside physician Doc Samson, and Sammy
03:08 got Jeff up for the GTH to win.
03:11 There were fears Jeff was concussed, and an odd scene was caught on camera in the post-match
03:16 of both Jeff and his brother Matt angrily swearing at Sammy, as Jeff could barely walk
03:21 and had to be supported by medical personnel.
03:24 At the time, though, a work shoot injury angle and the Hardys swearing at Sammy didn't
03:29 seem out of the realms of storyline possibility.
03:32 Jeff had already been using social media to potentially further his own work to shoot
03:36 frustration, and Matt had his own history of concussions with Guevara.
03:41 Matt vs Sammy at AEW All Out 2020 was one of the most controversial incidents of early
03:47 AEW, when a spot went wrong and Hardy's head smashed on concrete.
03:52 The match was allowed to continue, and AEW faced fierce criticism for not stopping it
03:56 sooner.
03:57 But sadly, the recent incident between Jeff and Sammy isn't long term booking.
04:01 It was, as Matt said on his podcast, the curse.
04:05 It looks like the Sammy Guevara/Hardy curse is real.
04:08 It lives on.
04:09 We thought it ended in 2020, but it picked back up in 2024.
04:14 Fightful Select's report writes that following the Jeff match on Rampage, Sammy was suspended
04:19 because concussion protocol was not followed, which resulted in Sammy Guevara hitting his
04:23 finisher on Hardy, which we're told shouldn't have happened.
04:28 Sammy wrestled an ODQ match against Powerhouse Hobbs on the following week's episode of
04:32 Collision, which was presumably to write him off TV.
04:34 He hasn't been seen on AEW TV since the 24th February, and the Fightful Select report
04:39 doesn't note the expected length of the suspension.
04:42 There's not enough information here to know what truly happened.
04:45 Was the information properly communicated to Sammy?
04:48 Was there a misunderstanding where the referee called for the finish, and Sammy thought he
04:52 meant 'hit your finish'?
04:54 We know the outcome - Jeff is out injured and Sammy is suspended - but we don't know
04:58 what actually went down in the chaos of that moment.
05:01 So please don't start jumping to conclusions or blame.
05:04 What we can do, though, is carry on with this story of the Guevara/Hardy curse.
05:08 Because it appears to go both ways.
05:11 Just as Jeff's AEW run since mid-2022 has appeared cursed, so has Sammy's.
05:16 After several poorly received hot potato months with both the TNT title and Sammy being a
05:21 heel or babyface, Guevara joined the JAS the day after Jeff got suspended for DUI.
05:28 This started a build for Sammy vs Eddie Kingston at that Summer's All Out.
05:33 But it never happened.
05:34 Sammy called Kingston a fat piece of S-word in a promo, but hadn't cleared that content
05:39 with Kingston in advance.
05:41 Eddie confronted him about that backstage, where Sammy just reportedly smiled.
05:46 So Kingston piefaced him and got suspended.
05:48 Eddie has since said he was in the wrong.
05:51 And then a month after that, Sammy was involved in another backstage altercation, when Andrade
05:56 confronted him at a TV taping after they had a heated exchange on Twitter, where Guevara
06:01 claimed Andrade was only hired by AEW because Ric Flair was his father-in-law.
06:08 Guevara has previously been suspended himself back in 2020, when inappropriate comments
06:12 he'd made about Sasha Banks on a 2016 podcast resurfaced.
06:16 Good luck that Sasha Banks isn't coming to AEW anytime soon then.
06:20 You don't want more people having heat with Sammy.
06:22 Oh crap, she's called Mercedes Manet now.
06:25 Interestingly, with Jungle Boy Jack Perry also kind of indefinitely suspended following
06:30 All In's backstage clash with CM Punk - he's currently over in New Japan - MJF taking time
06:35 off to heal from injuries, and Darby Allin set for an extended break to kind Mount Everest,
06:40 for the first time in the promotion's history, none of AEW's original four pillars will
06:47 be around.
06:48 It's classic last two years of AEW.
06:50 Put on one of the best shows of all time, then it turns out there's some backstage
06:54 controversy a few days later.
06:56 So let's leave AEW for now on some positives.
06:59 Will Ospreay is freaking great.
07:02 Not my words, but those of veterans backstage in AEW, as Dave Meltzer writes.
07:08 Another big thing noted to us was the reaction of the stars from the past to Will Ospreay
07:13 and the match with Konosuke Takeshita.
07:15 Many people there who had been in the business for decades had never seen an Ospreay match,
07:20 although had heard of him.
07:21 It was noted that they couldn't believe how good he was.
07:25 And continuing the wrestling positivity, congratulations to Paul Heyman for being announced
07:32 as the first inductee into the 2024 Hall of Fame.
07:36 Apparently this isn't the first time Heyman has been asked.
07:39 According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Heyman has previously turned down an induction because
07:43 he still considers himself an active performer, and only wants to go in once his career is
07:48 over.
07:49 So what's changed?
07:50 Two answers there.
07:52 Triple H and Philadelphia.
07:54 This year's WrestleMania is being held in Philadelphia, which is the spiritual home
07:58 of Heyman's Extreme Championship Wrestling.
08:01 And with Vince McMahon gone, this is the first ever Paul Levesque chosen class.
08:06 Which might be why Heyman wanted to be a part of it.
08:09 In terms of just how active Heyman still is, he's revealed to the New York Post just
08:13 how much input he has on the Bloodline creative.
08:16 "I carry a significant voice in how we are portrayed and presented.
08:21 That includes everything from camera angles to music to storylines."
08:25 Another rumoured name to join Heyman in the Hall of Fame is Haku - who The Rock considers
08:30 family.
08:31 Check out our Bloodline Family Tree Explained video for how that works.
08:35 It's confusing.
08:36 He's also the uncle of former New Japan star Tama Tonga, who's reportedly on his
08:40 way to WWE imminently.
08:43 And most importantly, Haku only just recently saw the Shockmaster debut for the first time.
08:49 Haku there.
08:58 A man so scary, Jake Roberts once said "If I had a gun and was sitting inside a tank
09:03 with one shell left, and Meng [Haku] is 300 yards away, he's mine, right?
09:08 Well, the first thing I'm going to do is jump out of the tank and shoot myself, because
09:13 I don't want to wound that son of a bitch and have him pissed off at me."
09:16 In a new interview with Chris Van Vliet - links in the video description below - John Cena
09:20 has spoken about the heel turn WWE had planned for him ahead of his once in a lifetime match
09:26 against The Rock in 2012.
09:28 "I heard rumblings of 'we're going to do it' and in 48 hours I had a new track,
09:33 a new studio mix theme song, final mix, I had seven new singlets, low cut singlets with
09:38 boxing type robes, I already had the boots in storage so I dusted them off.
09:42 I was ready to go, already thinking about what I could do with the story."
09:47 Cena explains that he was just going to do the complete opposite of his character at
09:52 the time.
09:53 So a wrestler I actually like?
09:57 By contrasting his jorts with singlets, his sneakers with boots, even down to his character's
10:02 approach to wrestling.
10:03 "I would begin to not work as hard.
10:06 I would show up less.
10:07 I would be untrustworthy, unloyal.
10:09 I would lack respect in what I did.
10:11 I would give up a lot."
10:14 So Roman Reigns now.
10:16 But in doing the opposite of everything then-John Cena stood for, it would be a huge financial
10:21 and moral hit.
10:23 Because not only was Cena considering pulling all his merchandise from WWE shop because
10:28 fans wearing his shirts was old Cena, he would also stop doing the make-a-wish visits that
10:33 benefited so many.
10:34 When WWE considered the reality of that, they pulled the plans.
10:38 How would you have turned Cena heel in 2012?
10:41 Let me know in the comments.
10:42 Little WrestleTalk update, but here at the end of January, we decided to trial not doing
10:47 SmackDown reviews on Saturdays.
10:49 Those videos weren't really getting the amount of views they needed, and it meant
10:52 a lot of people here could actually go back to having weekends for themselves.
10:57 And besides, over the previous six months, we looked at all the episodes, SmackDown just
11:04 wasn't that much of a newsworthy show.
11:07 And then it became the most newsworthy show and created arguably the hottest period in
11:12 WWE history.
11:14 Literally, the week after we decided to pause SmackDown reviews was the week The Rock took
11:20 Cody's spot, and we ended up doing an emergency podcast anyway.
11:24 So from this weekend on our WrestleTalk Podcast channel, Sat-E Day returns with Dan Layton
11:30 this Saturday and Luke for the following two weeks for a big hour-plus deep dive into the
11:35 previous night's SmackDown.
11:37 Just for clarity, there won't be a WrestleTalk News video on that day, so we're going to
11:42 carry on with our pre-made and advanced feature videos, which have been pretty well received
11:47 so far on the main WrestleTalk channel.
11:49 We're going to trial all that up to WrestleMania to see how it goes, so go over to our WrestleTalk
11:53 Podcast channel now and subscribe and enable notifications so you know first when it goes
