00:02 - Welcome to Style Solutions.
00:10 My name is Marina Lisht,
00:11 I'm the Associate Editor of nationalworld.com.
00:14 And as ever, I'm joined by Natalie Dixon, Lifestyle Reporter.
00:17 Welcome, Natalie.
00:19 - Thank you.
00:20 - So today we are going to be focusing
00:23 on a very exciting topic
00:25 and it is literally something I do wait,
00:27 well, it's not the whole year
00:28 because obviously we're just in March,
00:30 but I do wait every year for it
00:32 and it's the Oscars in case you're guessing.
00:35 So it's the Oscars 2024 taking place at this weekend.
00:40 And I don't know if you agree with Natalie,
00:41 but I'm sure, well, maybe you do or maybe you don't,
00:44 but I see it as the highlight of awards season
00:48 and just, I can't wait.
00:50 I don't know what your thoughts are, Natalie, on the Oscars.
00:54 - Yeah, I think it's almost like the,
00:58 all of the awards season,
00:59 all of the awards so far is leading up to the Oscars
01:02 and it's like the pinnacle of like award season.
01:05 So yeah, very exciting, very excited.
01:07 - So I often think about,
01:12 generally in sort of movie stars,
01:16 I don't know if I've shared this with you before, Natalie,
01:18 but I don't know if I've shared it with our audience,
01:20 but as a child,
01:22 there was nothing I liked more than watching movies,
01:24 but I didn't watch the movies
01:27 that were on in the cinema at the time.
01:29 I used to sort of love nothing more than watching
01:31 sort of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly,
01:35 sort of 1950s movie stars.
01:38 I don't stand by the sort of my belief
01:40 that I thought at the time,
01:42 I don't think anybody comes close to them
01:44 in terms of glamor.
01:46 So for me, they epitomized sort of elegance, style,
01:51 chic, they're so chic.
01:54 And I don't think a modern day star
01:58 have been able to sort of replicate that.
02:01 I don't know whether you disagree, Natalie,
02:04 or agree with me.
02:06 - I completely agree.
02:07 I think when you think of Hollywood
02:10 and you think Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe,
02:12 and all of those sort of stars,
02:13 it is that whole old Hollywood,
02:16 you know, that just, it just talks glamor
02:19 and you just automatically think about
02:20 how fabulous everyone looks.
02:22 And it seems like now,
02:24 yes, everyone sort of tries to be a little bit more,
02:28 you know, dressed in a bit different,
02:30 but yeah, you can't really recreate old Hollywood
02:32 as much as people try.
02:34 - No.
02:36 So, but look, I mean, I'm not gonna spend all the time
02:39 talking about old Hollywood,
02:41 because obviously I'm gonna start talking about
02:44 Sharon Stone, particularly her outfit that she wore.
02:48 It seems a long time ago now,
02:50 but I'm gonna talk about Sharon Stone back in 1998.
02:54 And she wore, well, some would say at the time,
02:57 quite sort of like a radical outfit,
03:00 but in terms of today, it wouldn't be seen as radical,
03:02 but she just wore a simple white shirt
03:05 and quite a fitted skirt.
03:07 And it seems that sort of time, you know,
03:11 as we always talk about,
03:12 fashion's come in, fashion's come out.
03:14 And that white shirt and that skirt that she wore in 1998,
03:19 a certain Zendaya opted for a similar look very recently,
03:24 and she looked totally, I thought, fabulous in it.
03:27 And I just wondered your views, Natalie,
03:29 on Sharon Stone's outfit
03:31 and then Zendaya's modern take on it.
03:33 - It's interesting because I think, yeah,
03:36 when you think Oscars
03:38 and you think of all the big sort of ball gowns
03:41 and the sort of over-sized puffy skirts
03:43 and things like that,
03:44 for Sharon Stone to wear a white shirt
03:47 and a midi skirt in, you know, '98,
03:51 it was quite different.
03:53 And I think I would have probably said then,
03:55 and I still say now,
03:57 it's not red carpet attire, you know,
03:59 it's more something that you'd wear on a Saturday night.
04:02 However, for some reason, when Zendaya did it,
04:06 it was revolutionary and it was amazing,
04:08 and she looked incredible.
04:09 But putting the two photos together,
04:12 they're basically the same outfit.
04:13 So it's funny how, yeah, times can change.
04:17 Fashion comes back around
04:19 and one person wearing it can look just mediocre
04:23 and another person is just completely amazing.
04:26 But I do love Zendaya,
04:28 so that might have something a little bit to do with it.
04:30 - I know, I think I love Zendaya at all.
04:32 I think she just looks utterly fabulous.
04:34 No matter what she wears,
04:37 it's, you know, she's managed,
04:39 but as you said, it wasn't,
04:40 it's not sort of like earth shattering,
04:42 but she just managed to look so glamorous.
04:45 So going back in time, sort of not now,
04:49 we're going back to the 1990s again,
04:52 particularly the year we're talking about is 1999.
04:57 And if I remember correctly, Gwyneth Paltrow was wearing,
05:02 was it a pink Ralph Lauren dress?
05:06 - Yeah.
05:07 - Yeah, so I think that she looked,
05:11 I, you know, as you know, Natalie,
05:13 I'm a big fan of the color pink and, you know,
05:16 today it's all about pink and Barbie pink,
05:19 but we were just talking before we came on air
05:21 about that pink wasn't a color that you would expect
05:24 back on the red carpet in the 1990s,
05:27 well, it was the late 1990s.
05:28 Would you agree with that, Natalie?
05:30 - Yeah, completely.
05:31 I think people stayed a lot safer
05:32 with sort of blacks, gold, silvers.
05:35 Those were sort of your key sort of colors to wear.
05:38 So I think it's such an iconic dress
05:42 and I think it's sort of more stand out
05:43 because, you know, she won the Oscar,
05:45 but also for the fact that it was pink,
05:47 it was just quite different then.
05:49 - Yeah, and I mean, in recent years,
05:52 the star that I think,
05:54 and we've talked about this before, Natalie,
05:56 I think we talked about it,
05:57 you said that you like red on the red carpet
05:59 and actually it works very well,
06:01 even though you think, oh, maybe it's too much red,
06:04 but Cara Delevingne looked incredible
06:06 in the red dress that she wore to the Oscars recently.
06:10 I love that look.
06:12 But what I want to talk about specifically with you, Natalie,
06:16 and we talked about hair trends and hair last week,
06:19 is that often, and obviously they have stylists,
06:23 they have makeup artists, they have hair stylists,
06:25 and they probably take, I can't imagine,
06:28 hours and hours to get ready,
06:30 but they so often get it wrong with stars.
06:33 What I mean by that is they might choose
06:34 the most beautiful dress.
06:37 It could be, for example, in "Crust of the Jewels,"
06:40 and the dress speaks for itself,
06:43 but then they do sort of,
06:44 either they sort of keep their hair down
06:46 so it just sort of, it jars
06:49 and it takes away from the dress,
06:50 or they do something crazy with their hair.
06:53 And the same with the makeup.
06:55 It sort of all has to sort of work together.
06:58 And you would think that sort of the stylist,
07:00 the makeup artist, hair stylist,
07:01 would be working together, but it often doesn't work.
07:04 I just wondered your thoughts on that.
07:07 - Yeah, I think that's the problem,
07:08 is that the stylist, the makeup artist,
07:11 and the hair stylist all kind of want to show off their work
07:16 and their incredible stuff so much
07:18 that I think they sometimes get a little bit carried away.
07:21 Like, say, like the dress could, you know,
07:23 it really is all about the dress,
07:25 and the hair and the makeup should just sort of,
07:27 you know, make it look a little bit better.
07:29 But I think sometimes, not everyone,
07:33 but they may be sort of like,
07:34 well, if the dress is amazing,
07:36 then the makeup artist think,
07:37 I need to make the makeup amazing and go big and bold.
07:41 And sometimes less is more, as we know.
07:45 - We certainly do.
07:46 But actually talking about less is more,
07:48 sometimes they don't do less is more.
07:50 When it comes to something else that's very important,
07:53 that I think sometimes it gets overlooked,
07:55 but sometimes I think it actually takes away
07:59 from the dress and the hair,
08:00 is the jewelry on the red carpet.
08:02 And sometimes I can't believe
08:05 that what the stars are wearing.
08:06 When I say I can't believe that,
08:08 I mean, obviously I can,
08:09 but the amount of money that they're actually wearing.
08:13 Some of the, you know, the necklaces are, you know,
08:15 covered in diamonds and they're incredible.
08:19 So I think obviously they probably need security guards
08:21 on the red carpet as well,
08:23 to walk alongside the Hollywood staff
08:26 to make sure that nobody damages
08:30 or does anything to the jewelry.
08:32 So, Natalie, your thoughts on jewelry on the red carpet,
08:35 specifically the Oscars.
08:36 - Yeah, I think I was, when I was doing some research,
08:40 I read that it was actually Audrey Hepburn,
08:42 when she went to the Oscars, I think back in 1961,
08:47 wore one of the most expensive pieces of jewelry
08:50 that has ever been on the red carpet.
08:52 But then more recently, overtaking Audrey Hepburn,
08:56 how dare she, was Lady Gaga,
08:59 who wore a really, really expensive,
09:01 I think it was a yellow diamond.
09:04 But yeah, so they definitely have to have a bit of security
09:08 'cause I think they are loaned the jewelry.
09:11 But I just feel more pressure, I think,
09:13 if I was wearing something so expensive.
09:16 You know, you think that it's gonna be a nice evening out,
09:19 we're wearing a beautiful dress,
09:20 but the pressure to have, you know,
09:22 really expensive jewelry as well
09:24 and security guards probably just
09:26 over your shoulder all the time,
09:28 must be a lot of pressure.
09:30 - Well, that's an interesting point you make, Natalie,
09:32 'cause you think, oh, it's so easy,
09:34 they've been in the chair for five hours,
09:36 getting their hair done, getting their makeup done,
09:38 it's not the worst job in the world to step out.
09:42 But when you mention pressure,
09:44 I suppose there is the pressure
09:46 of wearing very expensive jewelry,
09:48 but also the pressure of all the world,
09:50 all the modern media cameras,
09:52 everyone's attention being on you.
09:54 And you know, you could be wearing
09:56 extremely high-heeled shoes,
09:58 and we all know incidents where stars
10:01 have sort of tripped and fallen down,
10:03 and it's obviously-
10:04 - Jennifer Lawrence.
10:06 - Sorry? Jennifer Lawrence, yeah.
10:07 - Jennifer Lawrence.
10:08 - Everything.
10:09 - Everything is tripping.
10:11 - Can I stand up?
10:12 Will I not trip?
10:13 Is my hair gonna stay in a, you know,
10:17 is it gonna be, are my jewelry,
10:18 so there is that pressure
10:21 that perhaps we don't often think about.
10:23 I don't, but actually, I don't feel too sorry for them,
10:25 do you, Natalie?
10:26 (both laughing)
10:28 - No, they're used to it.
10:29 I mean, you know, having cameras on them all the time,
10:32 but yeah, at the end of the day,
10:34 sometimes they are just human,
10:35 and I would be gutted if I tripped or fell
10:38 or slipped or anything like that.
10:40 - Yeah, and what I'd like to see this year
10:45 in terms of the Oscars 2024
10:47 is just to be a bit braver.
10:51 As I said, I'm often disappointed
10:55 by the dresses or the dresses that the stylists choose.
10:58 I think there are so many beautiful,
11:01 stunning dresses out there
11:03 that they're able to sort of take from designers
11:05 that have just been on the catwalk.
11:07 And I would sort of, might,
11:09 and not that they, hopefully they might listen to me,
11:11 just to be a bit bolder
11:13 and to choose just some, you know,
11:15 truly beautiful dresses
11:17 rather than just opt for something that's safe.
11:21 Natalie, you might disagree with me on this.
11:24 - I think that it's, I mean, you know me,
11:26 I like sort of plain, simple.
11:28 I think that sometimes brave
11:33 could end up making them on the worst-dressed list,
11:37 which obviously nobody wants to be on.
11:40 Although I think many stylists have said over the years,
11:43 you either wanna be on the best or the worst.
11:45 There's no in the middle.
11:47 So yeah, I sometimes think that they stay safe
11:50 so they don't end up on the worst-dressed list.
11:53 But sometimes, you know, stayin' safe
11:55 just can be dull and boring.
11:56 So it's a difficult one,
11:59 but I think it's, you know, months in preparation.
12:01 So we will see.
12:03 - And I will go back to what I've originally said
12:06 when we were talking about previous award ceremonies.
12:09 If you're not 100% confident in what you're wearing,
12:14 and this goes, as I said, for everything that you wear,
12:17 it doesn't have to be, you know, the Oscars.
12:19 It's related to everyday life,
12:21 then don't opt for it.
12:23 And you can have the pressure.
12:24 I can imagine that a Hollywood star
12:26 feels the pressure from the stylist, probably.
12:30 You know, they might be, you know,
12:32 have a sort of a professional relationship
12:34 with a designer, the stylist,
12:36 and they're keen that their client,
12:38 the Hollywood star, wears the dress.
12:40 But I think it's important
12:42 that the star sort of remains true to themselves,
12:44 because you can often see on the red carpet
12:47 when the Hollywood star feels uncomfortable,
12:50 and you know that they don't feel 100% confident
12:53 in that dress.
12:54 Just wondering your thoughts on that, Natalie, finally.
12:56 - Yeah, definitely.
12:57 I think that, you know, there has been over the years
12:59 a lot of good stylists that have a good relationship
13:03 with their sort of celebrity,
13:04 and I think that always works well.
13:06 But yeah, when you kind of have somebody
13:08 that is almost sort of saying,
13:11 "I know you, and this looks great on you,
13:13 "and you should definitely wear it,"
13:15 and you're still slightly unsure,
13:17 you know, you do kind of think,
13:18 "Oh, well, they're the stylists.
13:20 "I should trust them."
13:21 And then the next day you're on the worst dress list.
13:22 So if there's any doubt, no matter what,
13:26 just kind of stick with your gut.
13:27 - No, I 100% agree with you.
13:32 Well, thank you, Natalie, for joining us today
13:34 on "Oscar Special Star Solutions,"
13:36 and I can't wait to see what the stars
13:39 do actually wear on the red carpet.
13:41 Thank you.
13:42 (upbeat music)
13:46 you
