How can the government help young people in London?

We ask the people of London what help the government can give young Londoners ahead of the spring budget

00:00 Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is set to deliver the spring budget on Wednesday March the 6th.

00:06 With the UK now in recession, the Chancellor is under pressure to deliver a package to

00:11 grow the economy and support those feeling the bite the most.

00:16 But when it comes to London, a huge issue is the housing market, and whether or not

00:20 it is even possible for young people to get a foot on the property ladder.

00:25 I was just going to say the biggest problem I think that faces young people is the whole

00:32 housing situation which is just absolutely dire.

00:35 And I think actually as we get closer to the election, I think housing ads actually start

00:40 creeping up there as a thing of importance, you know, along with the usual things, NHS,

00:47 crime, police, etc.

00:48 But yeah, I think housing is the biggest problem.

00:53 I think more support getting onto the property ladder, possibly more support with careers

00:58 as well, and especially more support in education and shopping.

01:02 You know, it's very much set in a way that people have to kind of decide their careers

01:06 quite early on, and then that expectation from the previous generation that you can't

01:12 hop out of jobs too much.

01:14 And financially it leaves a lot of people kind of in difficult positions, especially

01:19 because, you know, I guess the benefit is a lot more people are staying at home because

01:23 rent is so expensive and buying a house is so expensive.

01:26 But yeah, the government doesn't provide a great deal for young people at the minute.

01:32 I think the internship thing is a fantastic suggestion, and there are so many companies

01:35 out there that would be willing to offer support for up-and-coming, you know, whether it's

01:41 university students or those outside or even just, you know, other skilled workers.

01:46 That would be a fantastic thing to look at.

01:50 I think in terms of looking at how young people can afford housing, getting the first step

01:55 up the property ladder would be a great thing.

01:57 I think particularly in London it's so overpriced or out-of-priced, and so I think that would

02:01 be a great thing to look at, some sort of tax break, some sort of incentives that would

02:05 help young people do that.
