Synopsis :
A New York, au début des années 1970, Tish, 19 ans, est folle amoureuse de Fonny, un jeune sculpteur noir. Elle tombe enceinte. Son père accueille la nouvelle avec joie. Mais pour la mère de Fonny, c'est l'enfant du péché. Pourtant, Tish et Fonny sont bien décidés à se marier. Leurs plans s'effondrent quand Fonny est accusé d'avoir violé une jeune Portoricaine. Il est jeté en prison. Les deux familles se mettent alors en campagne, à la recherche de preuves qui le disculperaient. Pendant ce temps, Tish et Fonny tentent de continuer à s'aimer lors des visites au parloir....
