00:00 (audience applauding)
00:03 - Okay, next question please.
00:05 (speaking in foreign language)
00:09 (speaking in foreign language)
00:24 Yes, Ms. Mars, I am.
00:29 Good afternoon, and congratulations
00:31 to everyone involved in this much-awaited
00:34 musical production.
00:36 (speaking in foreign language)
00:38 So I'm just curious,
00:40 (speaking in foreign language)
00:44 (audience laughing)
00:47 But it felt like, you know,
00:50 very good visual and musical presentation.
00:54 Thank you.
00:57 I'm seeing everyone's eyes here,
00:59 (speaking in foreign language)
01:01 or all kinds of theory right now.
01:03 This is such a,
01:04 but of course, we've been playing these songs
01:09 every day, almost every day for the past few years,
01:12 and to see them
01:13 in this kind of setting,
01:16 performed by these amazing, amazing performers,
01:19 and to see it,
01:21 we've been with a new story
01:22 that we'll get to bring along with us
01:26 throughout our lives.
01:27 (speaking in foreign language)
01:31 (audience laughing)
01:35 (speaking in foreign language)
01:39 (speaking in foreign language)
01:43 (speaking in foreign language)
01:47 (speaking in foreign language)
01:50 (speaking in foreign language)
01:55 (speaking in foreign language)
01:59 (speaking in foreign language)
02:03 (speaking in foreign language)
02:07 (speaking in foreign language)
02:11 (audience laughing)
02:36 (speaking in foreign language)
02:40 Thank you.
02:44 (audience applauding)
02:45 Thank you.
02:46 (speaking in foreign language)
02:50 All right, next question.
02:53 I am Dennis from the Diaries, the Art Plus.
03:03 I would just like to ask Miss Maribel
03:05 and Michelle, which idea came first,
03:08 the movie or the band of Ben and Ben?
03:12 And at what point did you decide to blend
03:15 the music of Ben and Ben with the movie?
03:17 The movie that came first.
03:25 So, who offered who, whether the Unang Peta or Starlight,
03:29 (speaking in foreign language)
03:34 But then it started with Ben and Ben.
03:35 And I remember the last meeting we had,
03:38 I think, so it started with One More Chance.
03:41 (speaking in foreign language)
03:45 We had our last meeting with Charo,
03:48 (speaking in foreign language)
03:49 Hello, with I think it's Olivia Lamassan
03:53 and Mr. Santos, I forget the last name.
03:57 (speaking in foreign language)
03:59 At the time, we were still thinking,
04:01 would it be original or (speaking in foreign language)
04:03 But anyway, in the end, we really decided
04:05 it would be the existing music of Ben and Ben
04:08 because I thought, why not?
04:11 There are two very familiar things already.
04:14 I think you knew some, what will make it work?
04:16 People know it and that's a big draw already,
04:21 the fact that they're familiar and they know the movie
04:24 and they know the music.
04:25 So, even then, Ben and Ben (speaking in foreign language)
04:30 music for One More Chance.
04:32 (audience applauding)
04:35 Hello, good afternoon.
04:42 Jane Piano from Free Game Manila.
04:45 Question for the Popeyes and Basha,
04:48 CJ, Nicole, Anna, and Sam.
04:50 What scenes or One More Chance moments
04:53 are you looking forward to do on stage and why?
04:56 Let me see that Basha.
04:59 (audience laughing)
05:02 (speaking in foreign language)
05:10 It's gonna be a lot of work,
05:20 but we're just so excited for every single bit of it.
05:23 Be patient with us, Popeye.
05:27 (speaking in foreign language)
05:31 I feel like, for me,
05:34 since this is my first time to do theater
05:37 and first time to stand on every stage,
05:39 so I'm excited to do every scene with everybody.
05:42 They're all so nice, so I'm so excited.
05:44 (speaking in foreign language)
05:56 Exciting, March, (speaking in foreign language)
06:01 and yes, (speaking in foreign language)
06:06 (speaking in foreign language)
06:10 Yeah, (speaking in foreign language)
06:19 (speaking in foreign language)
06:23 From Popeye's character, Popeye's point of view,
06:27 (speaking in foreign language)
06:31 It's a very challenging scene,
06:37 and I'm looking forward to it as part of the show
06:40 and more so working on the scene.
06:44 Yes, I'm super excited.
06:47 Thank you and congratulations.
06:50 (audience applauding)
06:54 Hi, hi, everyone.
07:06 This is Leigh Baltar from Rappler.
07:08 My question is for the Batches and Popeyes.
07:12 We all know that One More Chance
07:13 is such a big cultural moment
07:15 when it first came out in November 2007,
07:19 so I'd like to ask, how does it feel
07:21 to be playing such iconic roles like Popeye and Batch,
07:24 and what are the challenges in approaching these parts?
07:28 (speaking in foreign language)
07:35 How's it feel?
07:35 Well, it's a daunting task.
07:38 We have big shoes to fill,
07:41 so there's a big pressure that comes with the role,
07:47 but it's a good kind of pressure.
07:49 Hopefully it produces diamonds.
07:53 (speaking in foreign language)
07:57 I think it's to stay true to the character
08:02 and (speaking in foreign language)
08:05 but at the same time,
08:06 adding our own truthfulness to the role
08:11 without deviating so much.
08:13 (speaking in foreign language)
08:17 (speaking in foreign language)
08:21 I am hoping to be able to relate to,
08:25 communicate with, and be able to relate in my own way.
08:29 Of course, I'm so honored,
08:36 (speaking in foreign language)
08:40 supposed to be CG Nevada,
08:44 (speaking in foreign language)
08:48 going to the--
08:49 (audience laughing)
08:52 (speaking in foreign language)
08:57 I'm so amazed.
09:00 (speaking in foreign language)
09:05 I'm just so excited.
09:14 I'm just taking everything day by day.
09:16 (speaking in foreign language)
09:18 Thank you, Lord.
09:19 (audience laughing)
09:20 (speaking in foreign language)
09:23 (speaking in foreign language)
09:27 Very overwhelmed (speaking in foreign language)
09:34 Iconic film, the characters,
09:37 a lot of people can relate to.
09:39 And I feel like that's what I want to,
09:42 hopefully, (speaking in foreign language)
09:47 So I'm trying to, I'm very excited,
09:52 and with the help of everybody,
09:55 (speaking in foreign language)
09:58 Excited, yes, this is my sixth production
10:08 (speaking in foreign language)
10:10 Thank you.
10:11 (audience applauding)
10:13 (speaking in foreign language)
10:17 I'm very excited.
10:21 (speaking in foreign language)
10:25 (speaking in foreign language)
10:29 (audience applauding)
10:41 Thank you, our puppets and Basha.
10:43 So next would be Sir Amadeus and Jude.
10:47 Senior space, (speaking in foreign language)
10:54 Good afternoon, I'm Amadeus Maria Guerrero,
10:58 inquirer and contributor.
11:00 I have two questions, but the first question is,
11:04 it's about ETA's well-known activism, social advocacy.
11:12 Is there a space for ETA's activism,
11:17 social advocacy in this musical?
11:21 The second question is, considering the success
11:24 of musicals like Rock of Ages and Fair Divas,
11:29 can we say that Joke Box musicals are the wave
11:37 of the future as far as ETA is concerned,
11:40 and in the years ahead?
11:42 Thank you.
11:43 (audience chattering)
11:46 I mean, yes, of course.
11:56 I think that the approach is creating performances
12:01 in place in different ways.
12:03 There are some that are more heavily,
12:04 obviously advocacy-oriented,
12:07 and then there are those that are more like this
12:09 for general public, but that never loses sight
12:12 of the fact that we care about content.
12:14 So for example, maybe Michelle can,
12:17 for this one, our update for this is the focus
12:20 on mental health, on personal relations.
12:22 (speaking in foreign language)
12:24 Healthy society, healthy country, right?
12:28 I mean, especially now, super prevalence of mental issues
12:32 and other challenges.
12:33 So it's also a social issue right now.
12:38 The whole idea of mental health and all that stuff
12:41 come from the pandemic, all the feelings of isolation,
12:44 all the things that came out of three years
12:46 of that kind of isolation.
12:47 So, (speaking in foreign language)
12:50 we're trying to flesh out (speaking in foreign language)
12:55 meaning that you're overseeing something so important,
13:09 (speaking in foreign language)
13:13 Are musicals the way to go?
13:23 No, that's not the only way.
13:24 I think, and I'm just, I keep talking about TETA,
13:28 but the whole theater industry,
13:30 the professional theater industry, it's one way.
13:35 It's one way.
13:35 Some people who are critical of the Jukebox Musical
13:38 will say that's easy, that's whatever,
13:41 that doesn't have Filipino original music.
13:43 I don't agree with that because at the end of the day,
13:46 that Jukebox, those songs, existing songs
13:49 are part of our Filipino music tradition.
13:53 (speaking in foreign language)
13:57 (speaking in foreign language)
14:01 (speaking in foreign language)
14:06 (speaking in foreign language)
14:11 Of course, (speaking in foreign language)
14:14 pre-existing is again awareness.
14:16 (speaking in foreign language)
14:20 (speaking in foreign language)
14:31 Bringing audiences.
14:32 (speaking in foreign language)
14:39 How old were they?
14:40 None of them had seen theater, so many of the fans.
14:44 That's so bothering to us from the theater
14:46 because these are the young people who want to come.
14:49 So it was so good that that fan base was able to come,
14:53 experience the theater, hopefully like it, and come back.
14:57 (speaking in foreign language)
15:01 Because if you want to grow, that coming,
15:04 that experiencing, the falling in love with the theater,
15:08 and the coming back and repeating,
15:10 that is the way we expand our audience base.
15:14 And we need them because we are not producing
15:16 plays just for ourselves.
15:18 Okay, at the end of the day, you know, like you guys,
15:21 that's how you help us, right?
15:23 You write about us or praise us or insult us,
15:26 who cares, as long as we're in the news.
15:28 But it's creating consciousness,
15:31 creating this awareness of what's happening.
15:34 At Camille's and Tapay's, we really recognize that.
15:38 And it's not easy, and we try to balance everything
15:41 between our content and our need for market development.
15:44 Because at the end of the day,
15:45 we're not a subsidized theater, right?
15:47 We raise everything we have.
15:50 So we can do everything, strats, to increase our audiences.
15:55 But that's not the only point.
15:57 As we increase, we also get a chance to educate more people,
16:02 send out our messages.
16:04 So first, maybe they'll come to our challenge
16:07 because they know the film or they know "Men and Men,"
16:10 but maybe they love the experience and they come back.
16:13 And the next time we do a play about gender, human rights,
16:16 boom, they're there for us.
16:18 And so for me, that's the most,
16:20 so look at it for us, we look at it as different strategies
16:24 to bring in not only our objectives in terms of content,
16:27 but as well as our need to expand our markets.
16:30 Yeah, our audiences rather.
16:33 So Michelle, maybe if you can add a little bit of how we're
16:36 (speaking in foreign language)
16:40 (speaking in foreign language)
17:08 In terms of the choices that we make,
17:10 do we give ourselves enough grace to fail,
17:13 to make mistakes, to learn from them,
17:16 and to make other choices, learning from those
17:20 (speaking in foreign language)
17:24 (speaking in foreign language)
17:28 It doesn't have to be big all the time.
17:41 It starts with yourself,
17:43 (speaking in foreign language)
17:47 So that is how we pedophile.
17:53 (audience applauding)
17:54 One more time.
17:55 So, you know, you're giving yourself grace
17:58 to learn from your mistakes,
18:00 to break down so you can get your breakthroughs.
18:03 (audience applauding)
18:06 All right, thank you.
18:09 Just to add to that,
18:09 for those of you who are here,
18:12 (speaking in foreign language)
18:14 Anybody?
18:14 Yeah, I see a few hands.
18:15 So we opened January actually with Control Shift,
18:18 our studio theater performances,
18:20 and we had varied themes.
18:21 So we're constantly evolving, developing new materials.
18:25 And obviously this is one popular production
18:30 that we're doing,
18:31 but PETA is into many, many things,
18:33 as many of you already know.
18:35 So, (speaking in foreign language)
18:37 Jude?
18:38 Hi, I'm Jude from Broadway World.
18:47 I'm from the Philippines.
18:48 (audience applauding)
18:51 My question goes to Ms. Maribel.
18:53 (audience laughing)
18:56 I'm just curious,
18:58 (speaking in foreign language)
19:01 I call it singing in the film.
19:04 (speaking in foreign language)
19:07 (audience laughing)
19:16 (speaking in foreign language)
19:20 Would Vasha be selling statement shirts?
19:27 (speaking in foreign language)
19:33 I will sell shirts.
19:37 (speaking in foreign language)
19:41 (speaking in foreign language)
19:45 I think even, are you really selling the shirts?
19:47 I'm really selling the shirts of merchandise.
19:50 As in even?
19:51 As merch though.
19:51 As merch, oh.
19:52 (speaking in foreign language)
19:56 (speaking in foreign language)
20:07 (speaking in foreign language)
20:11 Secret though.
20:19 (speaking in foreign language)
20:35 Michelle, how many songs are we using from right now?
20:39 Check, check.
20:46 About 29, but it's actually less than that
20:50 because it's a paid release.
20:52 Someone asked us to add this version of the song.
20:56 I think Mike wanted also.
21:00 (speaking in foreign language)
21:04 (speaking in foreign language)
21:11 (speaking in foreign language)
21:15 (speaking in foreign language)
21:19 (speaking in foreign language)
21:23 (speaking in foreign language)
21:28 (speaking in foreign language)
21:31 (audience laughing)
21:56 (speaking in foreign language)
21:59 Okay, can we do a quick range of hands again?
22:01 Who wants to ask?
22:03 Frida, one more there.
22:04 (speaking in foreign language)
22:05 Sorry, higher, right?
22:06 (speaking in foreign language)
22:10 So Frida and then one more for this row.
22:14 Here and then down the line.
22:15 Sorry.
22:16 (speaking in foreign language)
22:20 We will try to accommodate questions until five o'clock
22:24 and then after that maybe more informally, okay?
22:27 Hi, I'm Frida from Theatre.
22:30 (audience cheering)
22:33 Question for Mike.
22:34 You just wanted to ask about your process
22:37 of incorporating, arranging the music for this.
22:41 And was it a similar challenge or journey
22:43 with the other musicals that you've arranged music for
22:46 with prior?
22:47 Bye-bye.
22:49 Bye.
22:53 Of course, it's the same hard challenge.
22:57 (laughing)
22:57 (speaking in foreign language)
23:01 It's always the same challenge
23:03 because it's considering the script
23:08 and the existing songs at the same time
23:10 and what's the best thing to do
23:13 for the whole narrative, for every scene.
23:16 (speaking in foreign language)
23:20 It's a huge musical decision.
23:22 (speaking in foreign language)
23:26 It requires my whole life experience
23:33 to decide on one bar or the next bar.
23:38 So, actually, (speaking in foreign language)
23:44 as a musical director because I was an actor.
23:49 So, that's my lens.
23:52 How do I tell the story through music?
23:54 How do I embody the melody,
23:59 the songs, the harmony, the music, everything?
24:04 (speaking in foreign language)
24:10 (laughing)
24:12 (laughter)
24:14 [BLANK_AUDIO]
