A Helpful Sisterhood (1914) | एक मददगार भाईचारा | eine hilfsbereite Schwesternschaft | Colorized Version
Mary, a girl of humble means but noble birth, receives an invitation to join a sorority club at her high school, while her friend Sophie is overlooked. Flattered by the attention, Mary accepts the invitation, gradually distancing herself from her former friends. The influence of snobbery and restlessness enters her life as she strives to keep up with wealthier companions who exude pride and pretentiousness. In her pursuit to fit in, Mary transforms from a lovable girl into a discontented one.
A sorority dance is organized, and Mary, unable to afford the required contribution, resorts to stealing the amount from a fellow club member to maintain appearances. The other members, absorbed in their self-centered attitudes, remain oblivious to the demoralizing effects of their false pretenses and misguided notions of true worth.
Taking the first step into dishonesty, Mary faces further temptation when she realizes acquiring a new gown for the dance seems impossible. While shopping with a club member, she steals a pair of stockings and a roll of silk. Caught in the act by a house detective, the two terrified girls are taken to the manager's office.
Interestingly, the silent partner of the firm is the father of the girl from whom Mary initially stole. He delicately investigates Mary's actions through gentle questioning. Overwhelmed with guilt, Mary breaks down and tearfully confesses that she didn't want her sorority mates to be ashamed of her. The understanding father takes the two girls to the sorority rooms, where he explains Mary's temptations and the false notions of life's real standards. He emphasizes that character is the sole measure of personal superiority.
Convinced of their error, the girls forgive Mary, leading to the dissolution of the sorority. Mary, once again, regains her normal, sweet demeanor amidst wholesome surroundings.
