00:00 Here is your winner and the new undisputed WWE Universal Champion, The American Nightmare,
00:09 Cody Rhodes.
00:11 This is what a lot of wrestling fans want to hear at WrestleMania 40, but just a few
00:18 years ago this scenario appeared impossible.
00:22 Around 5 years ago, during AEW's first Double or Nothing show in 2019, Cody Rhodes made
00:29 a joke out of Triple H's classic "throne entrance."
00:34 He made his entrance to face his brother, Dustin Rhodes.
00:38 And with a sledgehammer in hand, a trademark weapon of the game, Cody proceeded to destroy
00:45 the throne.
00:47 The image was clear, the symbolism was even louder than that, and it made a powerful statement.
00:54 The American Nightmare's complete dedication to AEW, sending a clear message to WWE, who
01:00 he had formerly performed for and broke into the wrestling business with.
01:04 He was the son of the WWE Hall of Famer, the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.
01:10 Many thought he would be a lifer within WWE for that reason alone.
01:14 But Cody was initially positioned as an authority figure in this new breakout company, AEW,
01:20 in its early days.
01:22 Also as one of its top attractions in the ring, he utilized this moment to declare his
01:27 unwavering commitment to AEW's vision and what it was doing moving forward.
01:32 However, merely 3 years later, in 2022, a significant turn of events had unfolded at
01:38 WWE's WrestleMania 38 in Texas.
01:42 Cody Rhodes, who had left AEW a few months prior, made his huge, triumphant return to
01:49 WWE, under his own name, with his own logo, and the theme song you would hear him walk
01:56 out to in All Elite Wrestling.
01:59 So what transpired to cause the departure of THE person who was so instrumental during
02:04 the inception of AEW, and what it would do for the wrestling business as a whole?
02:09 This is Sportskeeda Wrestling, I am Kevin, what do you think of Cody so far in WWE since
02:15 he jumped back from AEW?
02:17 Let us know in the comments below.
02:19 Cody Rhodes made his big debut in WWE in 2007, and this came easy for him in the eyes of
02:25 some as he was the son of a son of a plumber in the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.
02:31 He initially gained attention as a part of various tag teams, later going by dashing
02:36 Cody Rhodes.
02:37 He achieved success with multiple championships, including the Intercontinental title, and
02:42 there were times when fans got behind him, and WWE could have maybe brought him to the
02:47 main event level, but he remained in the mid card.
02:51 Then he adopted the outlandish Stardust persona, engaging in cosmic fiend character ridiculousness
02:58 and tag teaming with his brother Goldust.
03:02 Cody gave his all to this character, but he wasn't really invested, and the character
03:06 itself had a real ceiling to it, and maybe some just considered it something that would
03:11 never get out of the mid card.
03:14 In 2016 he had enough, and he requested his release from WWE, seeking new opportunities
03:20 in the world of independent wrestling with all the creative freedom it offers.
03:25 Once outside of the WWE, Cody Rhodes embarked on a successful independent wrestling conquest.
03:31 He competed in various promotions including AAW, Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling,
03:38 and Impact Wrestling, showcasing his versatility as a performer.
03:43 One of the standout moments during this period was Cody's involvement with the Bullet Club
03:47 faction in New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he played a pivotal role in storylines and
03:52 had memorable matches that drew big crowds.
03:55 He also became the Ring of Honor World Champion, further solidifying his status as a top tier
04:01 talent.
04:02 Moreover, Cody's contributions extended beyond the ring, as he demonstrated a new level of
04:07 fresh creativity in business acumen, proving that he could move merchandise and tickets,
04:13 and became good friends with other tastemakers in the Bullet Club faction, Kenny Omega and
04:19 The Young Bucks, who proclaimed themselves "The Elite".
04:22 They started making appearances with various wrestling shows, and they were making a lot
04:27 of money and getting a lot of clicks online with their own exclusive digital content.
04:33 In 2017, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer responded to a tweet by a fan asking if Ring
04:38 of Honor could ever sell out Arena with 10,000 fans by saying "Not any time soon", asserting
04:45 that no wrestling promotion outside of WWE could successfully sell 10,000 tickets to
04:50 an event.
04:51 This tweet caught the attention of Cody Rhodes, who responded by saying "I'll take that
04:56 bet Dave".
04:57 This was an all-star show, something that felt like a Wrestlemania, but was not promoted
05:03 by WWE, featuring a who's who of talent outside of the WWE with Kenny Omega, Hangman
05:10 Page, Nick Aldis, Diamond Dallas Page, Rey Mysterio and many more.
05:16 The show was not only surpassed by the 10,000 ticket milestone, but it also became a monumental
05:21 success.
05:22 I was there.
05:23 It is one of the best wrestling shows I have ever seen.
05:27 The triumph of the independent show caught the attention of someone else, Tony Khan,
05:33 a wrestling enthusiast and owner of the NFL franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars.
05:38 Forming a connection with Cody, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, they would forge a
05:43 new wrestling venture, one that would be financed in a way that no other company outside of
05:48 WWE had been in decades.
05:51 The collaboration led to the creation of All Elite Wrestling, officially announced in January
05:56 2019 at a groundbreaking event in Jacksonville.
06:01 The legitimacy of AEW was underscored by the signing of one of the biggest stars in the
06:05 industry, Chris Jericho.
06:07 This move solidified that AEW was a legitimate, formidable force within the world of professional
06:14 wrestling.
06:15 Cody emerged as a central figure in AEW, assuming the role of an authority figure legitimately
06:21 backstage as an executive vice president along with the Bucks and Kenny, and also one of
06:27 the key performers in the ring.
06:29 He was an integral part of the core leadership.
06:31 At Double or Nothing, the inaugural pay-per-view for the company, Cody's symbolic act of
06:36 destroying the throne, as discussed earlier, set the tone.
06:40 His subsequent victory over his brother Dustin Rhodes and a fiercely contested bloody match
06:46 added a dramatic layer to the event.
06:49 Dustin was about to retire there, and then after the match, Cody delivered an emotional
06:55 promo stating that he wanted his brother for his next match against the Young Bucks.
07:01 This marked one of the most emotionally charged moments of wrestling that year, and this was
07:07 just their first show, and Cody was a big part of it.
07:10 Cody and Dustin weren't able to beat the Bucks at the Fight for the Fallen event, but
07:14 it revalidated Dustin's career. The "American Nightmare," as Cody was dubbed at the time,
07:20 shifted his focus to his next challenge, Chris Jericho, who had become the first AEW world
07:26 champion.
07:27 This move made sense, considering Cody's immense popularity within the AEW audience,
07:32 second only to Jericho.
07:33 During this period, Cody also squared off with talents like the upstart Darby Allin
07:39 and more.
07:40 This significant milestone followed the launch of AEW's weekly TV show and Dynamite in
07:44 October of 2019.
07:46 Cody featured in the inaugural match facing Sammy Guevara.
07:50 He also developed a friendship with young talents like MJF, while also engaging in a
07:55 feud with Jericho.
07:56 However, in the lead-up to the full-geared pay-per-view title match, Cody introduced
08:01 a now questionable stipulation before the match with Jericho, that if he couldn't
08:06 defeat Jericho for the AEW world title, he pledged to never challenge for the title again.
08:13 Fans speculated that this stipulation hinted at a predictable potential win for Cody.
08:18 However, at full gear, Cody's supposed ally, MJF, betrayed him, throwing the towel in during
08:26 Jericho's "Walls of Jericho" submission hold, allowing Chris to retain the championship
08:32 and Cody to never challenge for it again.
08:35 Obviously, Cody now passionately sought revenge against his one-time friend, now villainous
08:41 foe Maxwell Jacob Friedman.
08:44 While Max had already established himself as a skilled heel and prolific talker on the
08:48 microphone, this rivalry elevated him to a status of premier villainy in pro wrestling.
08:55 The intensity of their conflict was evident when MJF mercilessly lashed Cody with a leather
09:02 belt on television, a stipulation Cody would have to suffer simply to have a match with
09:08 MJF at the Revolution 2020 pay-per-view, another match I saw where MJF emerged victorious through
09:16 nefarious tactics.
09:18 Interestingly, in two of the AEW pay-per-views following the acquisition of the TV deal,
09:23 Cody faced defeats in both matches, prompting speculation from some that his status as a
09:28 presumed golden boy within the promotion was questionable.
09:32 He wasn't just going to be an executive president who put himself over in the ring
09:37 with contracted wrestlers.
09:39 However, Cody was still a prominent figure and leader both on the microphone and in front
09:45 of the camera for AEW, as whenever they needed a good boost, he was the man to call upon.
09:51 This became particularly evident during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he was
09:56 the first wrestler to address the TV audience on Dynamite in the absence of a live crowd.
10:02 His impassioned words resonated with an audience during a time of serious stress and doubt,
10:08 where the wrestling industry would face unprecedented challenges.
10:12 During this period, AEW introduced the TNT Championship as a secondary title alongside
10:18 the World Championship, and interestingly enough, the inaugural champion was none other
10:24 than Cody Rhodes.
10:27 Yet for some fans, it felt like a consolation prize, maybe a symbolic gesture following
10:33 his stipulation that prevented him from going to the world title level.
10:37 We're still scratching our heads about that one.
10:40 Despite this, Cody excelled as the TNT Champion, playing a crucial role in elevating emerging
10:46 talents like Ricky Starks and Eddie Kingston.
10:50 His initial loss of the title to Brodie Lee, who had just joined the fold recently from
10:55 WWE, was short-lived.
10:57 He swiftly regained the title in a rematch.
11:01 TNT Championship matches became central things you needed to watch in AEW, and it was mainly
11:07 because of his performances, but at Full Gear 2020, he lost the championship to the rising
11:13 Darby Allin.
11:15 This is when his booking in AEW started to get a bit rocky.
11:20 Cody owned a wrestling school, The Nightmare Factory, along with QT Marshall.
11:25 AEW incorporated this dynamic into his storyline, where QT turned on Cody.
11:31 This development didn't exactly capture all of the audience's interest at the time,
11:36 and some were just unfamiliar with QT, yet he was still coming up the ranks.
11:41 The prospect of Cody feuding with him may not have felt like a big-time angle.
11:46 At Double or Nothing 2021, Cody would face one of Marshall's students, the upstart
11:51 UK boxing standout Anthony Ogogo, and again, it just didn't connect like it should have.
11:58 The feud was built around Ogogo's criticisms of the United States, and Cody's response
12:04 as a patriotic flag-waving figure.
12:07 The angle just didn't connect.
12:10 The narrative lacked the compelling foundation that felt like it played into the edginess
12:15 that AEW had, making it challenging for fans to invest in emotionally.
12:20 The storyline heavily relied on the patriotic, almost political angle, with Cody positioning
12:27 himself as a defender of American values against Ogogo's criticisms.
12:33 Some viewers found the narrative a bit forced, and didn't really appreciate it as a divisive
12:38 storyline, leading to mixed reactions and lackluster engagement.
12:44 Cody won the match, and the outcome was perceived as predictable.
12:48 Predictable is not bad in wrestling, but considering the lead-up, it just didn't connect like
12:53 we mentioned.
12:54 The lack of substantial payoff diminished the overall impact of the feud, and after
12:58 this, he finally defeated QT in a strap match that put an end to all of it.
13:03 That strap match was pretty damn good, by the way.
13:05 It was one of the most underrated AEW television matches of the year.
13:09 Another turning point for Cody and his AEW journey unfolded with the debut of Malakai
13:14 Black, who came over from WWE and was formerly known as Aleister Black.
13:20 Cody became the first target of Black's wrath, when this trend continued with former
13:25 WWE wrestlers such as Andrade also setting sights on him once they joined the company.
13:31 Following his defeat to Malakai on Dynamite, Cody left his shoes in the ring, a symbolic
13:37 gesture that many saw as a potential sign of retirement.
13:41 However, Malakai persisted in targeting him, prompting Cody's valiant return.
13:48 Despite the initial intrigue, fan interest simply just didn't get where it was supposed
13:53 to be.
13:54 Cody was just the guy locked in the mid-card.
13:58 In retrospect, that's what you could see.
14:00 Additionally, Cody's involvement in personal projects outside of wrestling, such as the
14:05 Turner Broadcasting produced reality show Roads to the Top, raised concerns among fans
14:11 about his divided attention and maybe his questioning commitment to AEW.
14:16 The AEW audience wanted to turn Cody into a villain, but he simply wouldn't turn,
14:22 and questioning his commitment is also kind of ridiculous.
14:25 This is a guy who went through a flaming table for them.
14:28 Cody's earlier reputation as a fan favorite, a symbol of AEW's revolutionary inception,
14:35 also created specific expectations among that very hard-to-always-please audience.
14:41 When the character and storylines didn't align with collective fan expectations or
14:46 someone's specific fantasy booking who's never in a room producing a billion-dollar
14:51 TV show, it led to a sense of disappointment and dissent.
14:57 His promos became a bit more unrelatable to this specific, vocal portion of the audience
15:04 who demanded a heel turn, which honestly could have worked wonders for the American Nightmare
15:09 character, and all he had to do was go against his words and challenge for the world championship.
15:15 Come on, Cody, break your promises.
15:18 Isn't that an honorable trait?
15:20 But instead, AEW gave him yet another TNT championship reign.
15:25 But what about our fantasy booking that we wanted?
15:29 As 2022 got going, Cody Rhodes was slated to face Sammy Guevara for the TNT championship
15:36 in a grueling ladder match.
15:39 However, before the match, Cody delivered a poignant promo that captured a lot of attention,
15:45 and there are some easter eggs in there that people are still trying to figure out.
15:50 He began by stating, "Someone told me to save this promo, but I don't know if I'll
15:57 get the chance, so I'm going to do it now."
16:01 In a heartfelt address, Cody declared that his decision not to "turn" into a bad
16:06 guy, expressing his gratitude to the fans who supported him when he needed it most.
16:12 The promo took a subtle shot at some wrestlers that some people perceived within AEW, while
16:19 also acknowledging and putting over some of them at the same time.
16:23 Initially, the promo felt unusual, a step outside of what we had expected, but when
16:29 fans learned what was going to happen, it made a lot of sense.
16:34 Later that same night, Cody dropped the TNT championship to Sammy Guevara in a thrilling
16:40 ladder match.
16:42 The match essentially marked Cody's last appearance in AEW, as his contract was soon
16:47 set to expire, and he decided to part ways with the promotion.
16:52 It was easily the talk of the wrestling world.
16:56 Fans were left in a state of disbelief as news circulated that Cody, who was a key figure
17:01 in AEW, had departed the company.
17:05 Some were genuinely surprised, unable to fathom that a person who was such a big part in getting
17:11 it going was now going out the door and choosing to do so.
17:16 Speculation ran rampant, with some fans considering the possibility that this might be part of
17:21 some elaborate storyline.
17:24 Cody was working us, right?
17:26 And this could see him finally return as a heel persona, our fantasy booking fulfilled!
17:32 However, as reports started to emerge of something even bigger than that.
17:39 Cody Rhodes was the hottest free agent in pro wrestling, and what he would do next was
17:43 getting people talking.
17:45 And it was just a few months before WrestleMania 38 that was looming on the horizon, and Seth
17:52 Rollins, one of the most critically acclaimed wrestlers in the world in WWE, was set to
17:58 face a mystery opponent.
18:01 Yeah, everyone was connecting the dots.
18:04 Speculation ran wild, with many anticipating that the mystery man would be none other than
18:09 Cody Rhodes, yes, the prodigal son of a son of a plumber coming back to WWE.
18:16 The first night of WrestleMania arrived, everyone was expecting it, and they got it.
18:23 After what felt like an eternal pause as Seth waited in the ring with a stadium full of
18:28 people in Texas, the echoing sounds came and they brought everyone to life with the words
18:35 "Wrestling has more than one royal family."
18:40 And to the astonishment, yes, people were still astonished even though this was happening,
18:44 to everyone in the WWE fandom, Cody Rhodes emerged from the stage, prompting an eruption
18:52 that we had not heard in quite some time.
18:56 After 6 long years, Cody Rhodes, who had made himself into a magnificently bigger star than
19:03 he was during his previous tenure with WWE, was now back, and he was going to face Seth
19:09 Rollins in a show-stealing match and win.
19:13 Cody Rhodes wasn't just presented as any other wrestler coming back, he got to come back
19:19 at WrestleMania.
19:20 He got to come back with the theme music you had heard him use outside of WWE.
19:26 He came back with the name American Nightmare that he had outside of WWE.
19:31 Everything that made him a big star outside of WWE was now making him an even bigger star
19:37 back in WWE.
19:39 The feud with Rollins would continue with another victory at WrestleMania Backlash,
19:43 gearing up for another showdown in Chicago at Hell in a Cell.
19:47 However, fate would take an unfortunate turn for Cody because just when he was on top of
19:52 the world, roaring back as maybe the biggest babyface WWE had in years, he tore his pectoral
19:59 muscle just days before the scheduled match.
20:02 Instead of opting for a hiatus to recover, Cody Rhodes, in his first big return to WWE
20:08 in a pay-per-view main event match inside the brutal, unrelenting Hell in a Cell, he
20:14 decided to come out with that torn back and delivered an instant classic with Seth Rollins.
20:20 The intensity of that match was palpable, with Seth's offense moving and evoking emotion
20:29 and realism because you were seeing someone with a ripped muscle continue to perform directly
20:35 in front of you.
20:36 I was there, you could hear the gasp from the audience.
20:40 When Cody removed his ring jacket, it underscored his unwavering dedication to the business.
20:47 No matter where it was, if you paid to see Cody, you were getting all of Cody, highlighting
20:54 his commitment to top-notch performances.
20:58 Remember those people that questioned that commitment?
21:01 Where were they then when he took off that jacket?
21:05 This is probably the time when WWE decided that he was going to be the next guy, even
21:10 if he was going to be on the shelf with an injury.
21:13 As Cody furiously worked through rehab to come back, WWE fans anticipated that return
21:19 at the Royal Rumble 2023, and they got it.
21:23 Cody came out in the number 30 spot, clinching the victory over Gunther in a truly captivating
21:29 end to a Rumble match.
21:31 Cody, fully healed and back in action, announced his intention to finish his story, capturing
21:38 the WWE Universal Championship on The Show WrestleMania, a title that had eluded his
21:46 father Dusty Rhodes, who once nearly captured the title in Madison Square Garden, but only
21:52 lost the match on a technicality.
21:55 His path of emotional redemption to WrestleMania 39, and a showdown against another multi-generational
22:03 superstar in the hubris-fueled Tribal Chief Roman Reigns, was a real attraction.
22:11 Unfortunately, WWE had just completed a merger with Endeavor, and maybe those outside factors,
22:18 along with Roman Reigns still being a very hot property as a villain to pursue, who was
22:23 on the verge of a historic 1,000 day title reign, went with Roman, cheating his way to
22:31 keep the title again, using his entire family to do it.
22:35 Defeat was an emotional hard pill to swallow for Cody, who truly had people thinking he
22:41 would be the guy to take down the guy.
22:44 The following night on Raw, though, set yet again another path for redemption.
22:51 Cody found himself on the receiving end of a brutal assault at the hands of Brock Lesnar,
22:57 initiating a heated feud between the two.
23:00 Although Cody managed to survive Lesnar at Backlash, The Beast Incarnate got the upper
23:05 hand at Night of Champions, setting the stage for a final clash at Summerslam.
23:11 The battle at Summerslam, a show-stealing affair, was fierce, with Cody and Lesnar giving
23:17 it all, culminating in Cody securing a definitive victory over The Beast.
23:23 In an unexpected display, Lesnar, a ring veteran in his own right, showed respect by raising
23:30 Cody's hand in an unscripted moment, sharing a rare embrace and maybe a bit of vulnerability,
23:37 saying that this was the guy.
23:40 Cody's acknowledgement from The Beast added a unique flair in this moment for Cody, another
23:46 sign that many in the company saw him as the next face of the company.
23:51 In a calculated move, WWE strategically kept Cody Rhodes, the fan favorite, away from the
23:58 much-talked-about villain Roman Reigns, orchestrating separate feuds for the American Nightmare
24:04 with The Judgment Day and Shinsuke Nakamura.
24:08 As Royal Rumble 2024 approached, Cody emerged as once again another fan favorite to win
24:14 the prestigious match once again.
24:17 However, a twist unfolded a few months earlier when another significant star from AEW, CM
24:23 Punk, made his grand return.
24:26 The speculation was turned upside down, with many people thinking this was Punk's potential
24:31 Royal Rumble victory to set a path for him to return to main event graces of WWE.
24:37 This sentiment persisted until the actual Royal Rumble event itself.
24:41 As the climax neared, Cody and Punk found themselves as the final two men who would
24:47 venture off and point at the sign.
24:50 It triggered an electrifying atmosphere, with fans passionately choosing one side or
24:56 the other, and it seemed like a majority were leaning towards Cody.
25:00 WWE chose to go with the American Nightmare, who eliminated CM Punk and clocked his ticket
25:06 in for the main event of Mania once more.
25:10 The decision marked a pivotal chapter in Cody's journey within the WWE.
25:17 So who exactly booked this main event talent that is Cody the Best?
25:22 Was it AEW?
25:23 Many would say no.
25:24 Is it WWE?
25:26 Some would say yes, depending on what week you're talking to them.
25:30 You know who booked this main event star to be a real main event star?
25:35 Cody Rhodes did.
25:37 Cody Rhodes did it by leaving WWE on his own terms.
25:41 He did it by leaving AEW on his own terms.
25:44 He did it by projecting himself and connecting with the audience as who he truly is, someone
25:51 who dreams big and fights even bigger, a character during tough times that you can rely on as
26:01 someone who's going to fight for you.
26:05 Isn't that the idea?
26:06 Maybe it's predictable.
26:08 Maybe it's not your edgy, Attitude Era superstar.
26:13 Maybe it's 2PG.
26:16 Maybe you're just not letting yourself see it.
26:20 However, controversy brewed following his Royal Rumble victory.
26:25 Despite Cody swiftly setting his sights on Roman Reigns at the Rumble, an unexpected
26:31 turn occurred on the subsequent episode of SmackDown, where he graciously stepped aside
26:38 for The Rock to take his place.
26:42 The Rock, having recently returned to WWE and assuming a real-life position on the board
26:47 of directors for TKO, not so subtly called out Roman Reigns.
26:52 There were talks of The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for a long time, and fans wanted to see this
26:57 match, but the timing seemed odd.
27:01 Cody was the Royal Rumble winner.
27:03 That raised eyebrows as fans were disappointed to see him sidelined for this showdown.
27:09 This decision sparked a massive online backlash, with Cody trending and chants of "We Want
27:15 Cody" echoing throughout arenas and even leading fans to boo The Rock at an un-televised
27:21 show for WWE, a testament to Cody's rising prominence in the industry.
27:27 Ultimately, at the WrestleMania kickoff press event in Las Vegas, it was confirmed that
27:32 Cody would indeed face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, rather than The Rock.
27:39 In response to the fan reaction, The Rock and WWE made the right decision, turning him
27:45 heel and aligning him with Roman Reigns, joining the bloodline.
27:50 He ignited the feud by delivering a stinking slap to Cody at the press conference, setting
27:55 the stage for an intense rivalry with the American Nightmare.
27:59 While the prospect of a showdown between Cody and Roman promises fireworks, there is also
28:05 speculation of a potential clash between Cody and The Rock, or perhaps a tag team bout pitting
28:10 Cody and Seth Rollins against The Rock and Roman Reigns.
28:13 Regardless of the outcome, this feud is poised to elevate Cody to an even greater level of
28:20 stardom.
28:22 There is very little chance he will not win the title this time.
28:26 WWE has protected him at all costs it seems like, and now he is ready to be the face of
28:33 the company.
