00:00 "It says here that the Avatar can create tornadoes and run faster than the wind.
00:04 Pretty amazing."
00:05 "Ah, that's just a bunch of Fire Lord propaganda.
00:09 There's no way that's true."
00:10 Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:12 and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 funniest Avatar The Last Airbender moments.
00:17 For this list, we're looking at the most hilarious moments from Nickelodeon's Avatar The Last Airbender.
00:22 Number 10. The Cabbage Merchant.
00:26 Misfortune can be funny, and few characters are quite as hilariously tragic as the Cabbage Merchant.
00:31 "Ah, my cabbages!"
00:34 Whenever the Earth Kingdom entrepreneur shows up hoping to sell some beautiful vegetables,
00:38 the universe seems to conspire to ensure that his cart, cabbages, or both, ends up in disarray.
00:43 "My cabbages!"
00:48 Avatar The Last Airbender is a consistently hilarious show,
00:52 and this random recurring joke highlights the cartoon's talent for goofy but memorable gags.
00:57 It serves as a testament to Avatar's excellence that a character with so little screen time or
01:01 development can leave such a long-lasting impression.
01:04 "My cabbages!"
01:06 "You're gonna pay for this!"
01:08 Number 9. The Nomads.
01:09 Along their travels, Team Avatar crosses paths with quite a few unique personalities,
01:14 and the Earth Kingdom nomads are the most relaxed of the bunch.
01:17 "Don't fall in love with a traveling girl, she'll leave you broken, broken heart."
01:24 Led by the well-meaning but frustratingly chippered Shang,
01:27 the nomads bring a touch of melody, optimism, and even an idea or two to Team Avatar's lives.
01:33 "You're worried too much about where you're going."
01:36 "You gotta focus less on the where and more on the going."
01:40 In a stroke of genius, Avatar decides to stick the nomads with Sokka,
01:44 a combination that produces some gut-bustingly funny moments.
01:48 While these nomads don't show up again,
01:50 they make the most of their one appearance on Avatar The Last Airbender.
01:53 "Nobody react to what I'm about to tell you. I think that kid might be the Avatar."
02:00 Number 8. The Boulder isn't so conflicted.
02:04 As someone who's mostly introduced to make Toph look awesome,
02:07 the Boulder could easily have been a forgettable and throwaway character.
02:11 But that is not Avatar The Last Airbender's style.
02:14 "Listen up, hippo. You may be big, but you ain't bad.
02:18 The Boulder's gonna win this in a landslide."
02:22 With just a few lines, the Boulder goes from a fodder enemy
02:25 to a memorable minor character who also has some depth.
02:29 Boulder's comically exaggerated mannerisms are splendidly animated,
02:33 as is the short fight that ensues between the muscular Earthbender and the blind bandit.
02:37 "The Boulder feels conflicted about fighting a young blind girl."
02:43 "Sounds to me like you're scared, Boulder."
02:46 "The Boulder's over his conflicted feelings,
02:50 and now he's ready to bury you in a rock-a-landge."
02:54 This whole encounter plays out like a comedic skit,
02:56 one that showcases Toph's abilities and personality
02:58 at the expense of the Boulder's future offspring.
03:01 Number 7. Sokka gets owned by the Kyoshi Warriors.
03:11 The greatest attitude adjustments came with a healthy dose of humor.
03:15 Team Avatar's first run-in with the Kyoshi Warriors does not bring out the best in Sokka,
03:19 who shows off an ugly, misogynistic side.
03:21 "Who are you? Where are the men who ambushed us?"
03:24 "There were no men. We ambushed you. Now tell us, who are you and what are you doing here?"
03:29 "Wait a second, there's no way a bunch of girls took us down."
03:32 Luckily, Suki proves to be the perfect person to teach Sokka the error of his ways.
03:37 "I got you. Admit I got you."
03:41 "Okay, it was a lucky shot. Let's see if you can do it again."
03:45 Sokka's transformation into a Kyoshi Warrior is an important development for the character,
03:49 even if Aang still manages to get a quick zinger in.
03:52 Sokka and Suki would go on to form an unbreakable bond,
03:55 something Zuko almost discovers firsthand.
03:58 "Well, hello. Uh, Zuko, yes, why would I be expecting anyone different?"
04:05 Number 6. Zuko's rehearsal.
04:08 Super serious and often conflicted, Zuko does not have much time for comedy,
04:12 which Avatar The Last Airbender uses to great comedic results.
04:15 "Fine, you caught me. I'm gonna rescue my dad. You happy now?"
04:19 "I'm never happy."
04:21 After turning over a new leaf, Zuko grew less prideful and proved willing to admit
04:25 to his failings to join Team Avatar.
04:27 "I think it's time I joined your group and taught the Avatar firebending."
04:32 An act of such vulnerability naturally required practice,
04:35 so Zuko turned to a badger frog for guidance. It did not help much.
04:39 "Yeah, that's what I'd say too."
04:43 Whether preparing to join his father and nation's enemy or while out on a date,
04:47 Zuko brings a touch of awkwardness that's not only hilarious,
04:50 but also makes the firebender even more endearing.
04:53 "Didn't I say don't look?"
04:54 "You're right, Zuko. I've seen that girl in here quite a lot.
04:59 Seems to me she has quite a little crush on you."
05:04 "What?"
05:04 "Thank you for the tea."
05:05 When someone is as funny as Sokka, they can be physically immobilized and still bring the laughs.
05:14 "You're awfully cute, but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat.
05:18 Just a bit closer."
05:21 While hunting for meat, Sokka gets stuck in a hole and is left to helplessly wait to be rescued.
05:31 Along with making an adorable friend, Sokka goes through an internal journey of self-discovery
05:36 as the trapped hero grapples with his mortality.
05:39 "I admit it, you're cute.
05:41 Okay, you convinced me. If I get out of this alive, it's a karmically correct
05:48 vegetarian existence for me. No meat."
05:51 Aang also gives Sokka's hair an impromptu makeover.
05:54 This entire storyline is hilarious from beginning to end,
05:57 with the final punchline leaving Sokka's newfound wisdom unshared with the rest of Team Avatar.
06:03 "The whole time I was in that hole, not knowing if I would live or die,
06:06 it makes a man think about what's really important. I realize."
06:11 "Hey, Katara, look what I can do!"
06:12 Avatar The Last Airbender takes several cues from anime, especially in the comedy department.
06:23 "You've got to take care of yourself. You can't go on like this."
06:28 Therefore, it's only fitting that the show's most obvious homage to Japanese animation
06:32 is also a laugh riot.
06:33 With the day of the Black Sun quickly approaching,
06:36 a nervous Aang decides to stay awake after suffering a string of revealing nightmares.
06:40 "How do you plan on doing that when you are not even wearing pants?"
06:44 "Oh no!"
06:47 This leads to some even weirder daydreams starring Momo,
06:52 Appa, and a handy Guru Pathik.
06:54 Packed with references and impressively animated for what's essentially an extended skit,
06:59 Aang's sleep-deprived mind gives birth to some comedy gold.
07:03 "Come on, guys, we're all on the same side."
07:05 "Chakras, chakras! Everybody loves chakras! Chakras, chakras! Chakras and it is good! Yum!"
07:16 #3 Azula's Awkward Flirting
07:18 For the most part, Azula is terrifying.
07:21 But Avatar does humanize the Fire Nation princess during season 3.
07:24 The beach is an especially important episode,
07:31 as it shows Azula's insecurities around people her age, particularly boys.
07:36 Azula attempts to sweep Chan off his feet with some sharp lines and a fiery prophecy,
07:40 but the princess is a bit inexperienced when it comes to flirting.
07:43 "That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an Empire-class
07:49 Fire Nation battleship, leaving thousands to drown at sea."
07:53 Azula is a fantastic villain, but there is more to the character than just sadism and cruelty,
07:58 and these brief flashes of awkward normalcy add a lot to the firebender's appeal.
08:02 "Together, you and I will be the strongest couple in the entire world. We will dominate the Earth!"
08:13 "Uh, I gotta go."
08:15 #2 Sokka Trips on Cactus Juice
08:18 Sokka is a comedy god, and the desert allows everyone to bask in the character's glory.
08:23 After quenching their thirst with some cactus juice,
08:26 Sokka and Momo go on a trip filled with mushrooms, moons, and vibrant colors.
08:42 This could easily have been a single scene, but Avatar stretches out this plot development for
08:46 an entire episode, and it is a great decision. While the visuals do change slightly on occasion,
08:52 we're mostly left to imagine Sokka's hallucinations, which pays off later on in
08:56 the episode when the joke keeps on coming back to trigger even more laughs.
08:59 Before we unveil our number one pick, here are some honorable mentions.
09:09 Pants are an illusion, because the foggy swamp tribe is very wise.
09:13 Sokka's water tribe flex, because Sokka has swag for days.
09:36 Riot interrupted, because that is an impressive way to start a prison riot.
09:41 Iroh gets mugged, because it is always a great time for an Iroh lesson.
10:00 King Boomy, because it is fun messing with people.

10:35 When adapting a true story for the stage, some creative liberties are to be expected,
10:44 as Team Avatar learns too well at the Ember Island Theater.
10:57 The Ember Island players put on a generally plot-faithful reenactment of Teen Avatar's
11:01 adventures, while amplifying some less flattering traits of the key characters.
11:05 In the play, Sokka is turned into a starving comedic relief, Katara cannot stop talking
11:21 about hope, Aang and Toph swap genders, Azula is shown in heroic light, and Zuko is mostly spot-on.
11:29 The Ember Island players put on one incredibly entertaining show.
