FULL SPEECH: Marcos leaves for Melbourne for ASEAN-Australia special summit

President Marcos has left Manila for Australia anew to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Australia Special Summit in Melbourne from March 4 to 6.

Marcos said there will be two main engagements in the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, including the “Leaders’ Plenary” where they will take stock of ASEAN-Australia cooperation and propose ways forward to further bolster relations, and a "Leaders Retreat" where they will exchange candid views on key regional and international issues.

00:27 Today I fly to Melbourne to attend a special summit to commemorate the 50 years of ASEAN-Australia
00:36 relations at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. As the first ASEAN
00:42 leaders level engagement for the year, the summit presents an opportunity to reiterate the Philippines'
00:50 national positions on regional and international issues and set the tone for ASEAN's dialogue
00:57 partner summits later in the year. There will be two main engagements with the leaders plenary
01:03 where we will take stock of ASEAN-Australia cooperation and propose ways forward to further
01:09 bolster relations and a leaders retreat where we will exchange candid views on key issues affecting
01:16 our region and the world. The summit will be an opportunity for the Philippines to thank Australia,
01:23 ASEAN's oldest dialogue partner, for its unwavering support for the rule of law, for the 1982 UNGLOS
01:31 and the 2016 Arbitral Award, through timely statements of support as well as through capacity
01:38 building and academic initiatives to mainstream appreciation of international law. On the sidelines
01:46 of the summit, I will hold bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and New Zealand
01:52 to further strengthen our cooperation. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with the
01:58 Filipino community in Melbourne as well as to promote Philippine business through the Philippine
02:04 Business Forum led by our DTI Secretary. I also look forward to the launching of the expansion
02:12 of the Victoria International Container Terminal, Australia's first fully automated container
02:20 terminal. The VICT is a subsidiary of the International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
02:28 ICTSI, and is a testament to ICTSI leadership as a leading Filipino company in the field of
02:38 global port management. While I'm in Melbourne, I will deliver a keynote speech to the Lowy Institute
02:45 where I will highlight the Philippines' role as an active participant in world affairs
02:51 and a contributor to the rules-based regional security architecture.

03:01 our external partners and stakeholders, will best serve our national interest.
