Special edition of Mahindra Thar is four times cheaper than the original Jeep Wrangler in India
Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is the new flagship version of the off-roader and adds several unique styling touches from the desert-inspired interior to the exterior.
Starting with the exterior, the Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is exclusively available in satin matte “Desert Fury” color paired with decals on the profile, black Mahindra badges and special Earth badging on the B-pillars. Additionally, the slits in the grille are also coated in Desert Fury color to contrast with the black surround. Like other versions of the Thar, the special edition also rides on 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with off-road tyres.
Inside, the seats are upholstered in beige synthetic leather and the headrests are embossed with a dune-inspired pattern. A special VIN plate is mounted on the left side of the dashboard, while the parts around the air conditioning vents match the color of the exterior.
Earth Edition is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS) or a 2.2-liter diesel engine producing 130 hp (97 kW / 132 PS). In both cases, power is transferred to all four wheels via a manual or automatic transmission. Note that the Mahindra Thar is also available in RWD form, but the Earth Edition comes in 4WD form only.
Predictably, the Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is the most expensive trim in the range, priced between Rs 15.40 lakh ($18,573) and Rs 17.60 lakh ($21,227), depending on the powertrain. Still, this is almost four times cheaper than an original Jeep Wrangler, which starts at Rs 62.65 lakh ($75,560) in the Indian market.
The Thar may only have been a two-door model since it went on sale in 2010, but the ladder-chassis off-roader will soon get a longer and more practical five-door version. Its launch in India, with multiple powertrain options, is expected by mid-2024.
