The Browning Version

Remake of the 1951 film The Browning Version. Based on the play by Terence Rattigan it tells the story of Andrew Crocker-Harris, an old teacher who feels that his life has been a failure. His academic life is waning. He is forced into early retirement due to a heart condition, and the headmaster informs him that because of the early retirement the school will not give him his pension. Furthermore he asks Crocker-Harris to relinquish his end-of-term speech in favour of a popular (and young) sports master. His students call him the “Hitler of the lower fifth”, his wife has an affair with one of his younger colleagues, humiliations keep mounting up on Crocker-Harris, who has learned to bear them without much grinning. It is Taplow, a student whom he’s giving extra lessons in Greek, who finally makes Crocker-Harris reveal his true feelings.
The Browning Version stars Albert Finney, Greta Scacchi, Matthew Modine, and young Ben Silverstone as Taplow.
