China plans to send a new pair of giant pandas to the San Diego Zoo, renewing its longstanding gesture of friendship toward the United States after nearly all the iconic bears on loan to U.S. zoos were returned as relations began to sour between the two nations.

00:00 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
00:14 Well, I'm very excited to announce that at San Diego Zoo
00:18 Wildlife Alliance, we do think we're
00:20 going to be getting giant pandas in the not too distant future.
00:24 Unfortunately, we don't have a date.
00:26 We're still working on that with our collaborating partners
00:30 in China.
00:31 It's a long process to bring giant pandas from China
00:35 to the United States.
00:37 So there's years of negotiations with the authorities in China
00:42 and also with our own federal government, the US Fish
00:46 and Wildlife Service.
00:47 So we have to get a permit to bring these pandas
00:51 into the country.
00:52 In order to get a permit, we have
00:54 to show that we know how to take care of them, which
00:56 of course we do.
00:57 We've done it before, and we did it very well.
01:00 We also have to show that we're contributing
01:02 to the conservation of the species back in China.
01:05 So we have to develop research proposals
01:08 to show how we're going to help increase
01:12 knowledge about their biology and conservation
01:16 and apply that back to conservation management.
01:18 Well, the giant panda, of course,
01:20 won the heart of everyone that comes to the San Diego Zoo.
01:24 And we at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance
01:27 are very excited to have them back.
01:31 They're an iconic species.
01:35 They're an ambassador for conservation.
01:38 It means a lot to us because by bringing in people
01:42 to see the giant panda, we know that they will fall in love
01:46 with this panda.
01:46 And hopefully, they will take that love
01:49 and put it into action for conservation
01:52 to conserve the giant panda.
01:54 So we can all work together.
01:57 We love the giant pandas here in the United States.
02:00 They love the giant pandas in China.
02:02 That's something that we can connect on.
