Sunak: Hoyle’s handling of ceasefire vote was ‘concerning’

Rishi Sunak has criticised Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s handling of the Gaza ceasefire vote as “very concerning” and warned parliamentarians should never be intimidated by “extremists”. The prime minister condemned the way the Commons speaker had changed the “usual ways in which Parliament works” by approving Labour’s bid to amend an SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, a move that unleashed chaos in the chamber. 00:00 What happened in Parliament last night was concerning because the usual ways in which
00:04 Parliament works were changed. Now my understanding is that the Speaker has apologised
00:08 for what happened and is reflecting on that. But I think the important point here is that we should
00:12 never let extremists intimidate us into changing the way in which Parliament works. Parliament is
00:18 an important place for us to have these debates and just because some people may want to stifle
00:23 that with intimidation or aggressive behaviour, we should not bend to that and change how Parliament
00:28 works. That's a very slippery slope, it's not the right way to go. Well the Government's position
00:33 is very clear. What we want to see is an immediate humanitarian pause in hostilities which will allow
00:38 us to get the hostages out, including the British hostages, but also get more aid in to people who
00:43 need it. And we can use that immediate pause to then build the conditions for a sustainable
00:48 ceasefire which can last and that means Hamas crucially having, and that means
00:53 Kremas, crucially not having any role to play in Gaza.
