00:00 WWE blocking talent from shows, what's next for Sheamus? Are TNA Talent Planning a mutiny?
00:06 And more. I'm Luke Owen and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:11 2024 has already seen some incredible wrestling matches from every promotion around the world.
00:22 Whether it's Bryan Danielson vs Kazuchika Okada from WrestleKingdom, or Danielson vs
00:27 Zack Sabre Jr from New Beginning in Osaka - the War Games match on that show was also
00:31 brilliant - or it's Hangman Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland on AEW Dynamite, Will Ospreay
00:37 vs Josh Alexander in TNA, the awesome Elia Dragunov vs Trick Williams match from NXT,
00:42 Ospreay vs Michael Oku from Rev Pro this past weekend - one of the greatest wrestling matches
00:48 I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live - we are being spoiled as wrestling fans right
00:54 now. Tomorrow night I'm going to get to see Oku take on Robbie X and Leon Slater in
00:58 a triple threat at Riot Cabaret. That is nuts. But all of this great wrestling is why the
01:04 term 'dream match' can often feel like it's getting thrown around without a lot
01:08 of any real meaning behind it. Yeah, sure, Bryan Danielson vs Zack Sabre Jr is a dream
01:15 match. Yeah, sure, Robbie X vs Mustafa Ali is a dream match. But how's this for a slice
01:22 of fried gold? Minoru Suzuki vs Maki Ito.
01:27 Oh I hope you were able to catch your socks as they were blown off your feet. The match
01:32 will take place on March 31st at TJPW's Grand Princess 24, and Ito herself posted
01:38 about the match on Twitter saying that it was kill or be kill. I think they should try
01:42 and cute or be cute. I think they should try and out-cute each other. Maybe even gimmick
01:47 swap for the match. Suzuki can come down to the ring and sing his own entrance song. But
01:52 let's just hope that they play nice.
01:55 And speaking of playing nice, WWE are the hottest ticket in town right now. The return
02:01 and subsequent heel turn of The Rock has made an uber babyface out of Cody Rhodes, and now
02:05 shows that were already selling well are now selling out. This past Monday's Raw in Anaheim
02:11 was a legit sellout, as was last Friday's Smackdown, and WrestleTix are reporting via
02:16 Twitter that next week's show in San Jose is also likely to sell out as there's less
02:21 than 200 tickets available. It harkens back to the glory days of the company during the
02:27 Attitude Era when episodes of Raw or Pay-Per-Views would open with Jim Ross telling you that
02:32 this is just another sold out crowd. WWE is so hot right now, creatively speaking. But
02:40 the more things change, the more they stay the same.
02:44 Following Jordan Grace's appearance in the Royal Rumble, there was some speculation that
02:47 there could be some sort of forbidden door that had been opened and there would be tons
02:51 of exchanges between TNA and WWE. But that hasn't really been the case. And now Martin
02:57 Best, the co-owner of Progress Wrestling, has spoken to Tom Campbell of Cultaholic about
03:02 how WWE didn't approve of them booking talent that also worked with All Elite Wrestling.
03:09 "WWE and Progress went into a working relationship during WWE's expansion in the UK when they
03:14 launched NXT UK, which itself was WWE trying to capitalize on the rise of British wrestling,
03:20 referred to as Britwrest, which saw shows like Progress, Rev Pro, NGW, ICW, Eve and
03:26 many more sell out shows on a consistent basis. The relationship saw the UK-based promotion
03:31 still get access to talent that had signed with NXT UK like British Strong Style and
03:35 also get their shows aired on the WWE Network. But it wasn't just NXT UK talent that Progress
03:41 were using, as they also booked other independent talent, some of which also happened to work
03:47 with AEW like Swerve Strickland, Anthony Ogogo and Jonathan Gresham, who at one point was
03:52 Progress' world champion."
03:54 Progress' deal with WWE to air their shows on the Network ended in January of last year,
03:59 and it was the bookings of Ogogo, Swerve and Gresham that WWE took issue with, removing
04:05 their matches from the WWE Network even though at that point, Gresham wasn't even working
04:11 with All Elite Wrestling. This meant that some Progress shows were aired without world
04:16 title matches.
04:18 But before we hear more details about that, here's a video about Surfshark!
04:22 Hey Luke, have you got any ideas for the Surfshark ad?
04:27 Surfshark ad?
04:28 Yeah, I'm writing the ad for Surfshark this month, but I don't know what to say. I feel
04:32 like everyone knows about Surfshark at this point, right?
04:35 What's a Surfshark?
04:37 It's a VPN.
04:38 What's a VPN?
04:39 A virtual private network.
04:42 So I'll be able to protect my data and watch content from overseas and protect me from
04:48 cybercrime?
04:49 Yes, Luke, and our audience will be able to secure their privacy online by using the code
04:52 WrestleTalk to get 3 months extra for free using the link below.
04:55 I'm all out of ideas, I'll be honest with you. Maybe you could come in as a cowboy and
05:02 horse ride your way through the VPN world?
05:07 Well handy doo, y'all heard about Surfshark VPN-
05:11 Luke, I think I'm just going to write out the conversation we had for the ad.
05:17 That'd be ridiculous, P. I mean, how would you end the video?
05:20 Well, I- I-
05:22 Best told Cultaholic, there were a couple of times where we were bringing in wrestlers
05:35 and talent from other promotions which maybe they would have viewed as competitive to the
05:40 WWE landscape, so on a couple of occasions, they omitted one or two contests.
05:45 He says that Progress asked WWE, "What was the point of us making shows for you if you
05:50 don't want to air all of those shows?" and that Progress were aware that WWE would
05:55 push back on talent being booked from rival promotions.
05:59 He added, "We were aware that might have prevented some of our content going on the
06:03 network but we were absolutely not willing to compromise the quality of our shows because
06:09 ultimately we've got to deliver a wrestling match and a wrestling show that satisfies
06:14 our fans."
06:15 On a similar note, Kevin Nash revealed on his Click This podcast that Sting asked him
06:20 to be in attendance for his retirement match at AEW Revolution next month, but due to Nash's
06:25 relationship with WWE, he isn't allowed to be there.
06:29 Sting and Nash's relationship goes back years, with the pair being part of the same
06:33 NWO Wolfpack faction in WCW and winning tag gold together, which is why Sting wanted Nash
06:39 to be there in the audience for his final match.
06:43 Nash revealed, "Sting asked me to be part of it and I just said that, because of my
06:47 positioning with WWE, I couldn't.
06:50 If I went in the crowd, it would be a potential conflict of interest."
06:54 He added, "I think he was disappointed.
06:56 I mean, I was disappointed.
06:58 But I knew that WWE would say no."
07:02 Rob Van Dam has revealed that his recent appearances with All Elite Wrestling - even though he
07:07 asked WWE if it was okay to take the All Elite Wrestling bookings - lost him his WrestleMania
07:13 40 bookings.
07:14 So what would you do?
07:16 Would you want your talent or talent associated with you appearing on other shows, or would
07:21 you take the other route like a lot of other promotions do and work together?
07:25 Let me know in the comments down below.
07:27 It's been nearly seven months since Sheamus last wrestled in a WWE ring, losing to Edge
07:32 on an episode of Smackdown - which would also be Edge's last match in WWE before he went
07:36 to AEW - though it has been reported that Sheamus was dealing with a shoulder injury
07:41 that was keeping him off TV.
07:43 But now the Celtic Warrior is teasing a potential comeback, tweeting, "Anyone missing 5 star
07:49 banger matches?"
07:50 Hilariously when a fan said they wanted "character and story" and not "5 star wrestling",
07:55 Sheamus replied, "Watch a soap opera then."
07:58 This would suggest that Sheamus is close to a wrestling return, and there is now a Gunther
08:04 WrestleMania spot open where he could finish his own story.
08:08 But there's also speculation that Sheamus could be on his way out of WWE as his contract
08:14 expires this year and he has been sharing a lot of creative frustrations he has with
08:19 WWE.
08:20 He told the Daily Star in August last year following his Match of the Year contenders
08:24 with Gunther at Clash of the Castle and Gunther and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39, "I
08:28 came out of that with so much organic momentum and it was just wasted.
08:34 It didn't go anywhere.
08:36 There was no avenues and nowhere to go and that's frustrating."
08:41 He even went as far to say that the 2022 War Games match that he was a part of at Survivor
08:45 Series was s***.
08:47 He also took issue with the Bloodline story, saying, "I feel like there's guys on the
08:51 roster begging for that amount of time to tell their own stories and that's one of
08:56 the only things that's going.
08:58 The rest of the roster needs story time too."
09:01 He went on to express his frustrations of Bloodline segments always going over time,
09:05 which impacts the rest of the show and reduces everybody else's screen time.
09:10 But while some of you in the comments may jump to the Sheamus at AEW confirmed bandwagon,
09:15 he seems to be trying to work himself into that Gunther WrestleMania match - tweeting
09:19 that he wants to finish the trilogy and finally win the one title in WWE that he's never
09:24 held - the Intercontinental Championship.
09:27 Where do you think Sheamus will end up?
09:29 Let me know in the comments down below.
09:30 But it's not just Sheamus who's been sharing his frustrations with his employer, as there's
09:34 something strange in the TNA neighbourhood.
09:37 2024 was supposed to be THE big year for TNA Wrestling.
09:42 They just rebranded themselves back to TNA after several years under the Impact Wrestling
09:46 name looking to capitalise on the nostalgia that people have for the total non-stop action
09:51 brand.
09:52 You know, people like me.
09:53 Their first PPV of the year, Hard To Kill, was praised by fans and critics alike, and
09:58 they followed that up with an episode of Impact that featured both Will Ospreay and Kazuchika
10:03 Okada.
10:04 And then Anthem, the parent company of TNA, fired the guy who was spearheading these big
10:10 changes.
10:11 It has since come out that Scott D'Amour, the guy in question, was looking for Anthem
10:15 to put more money into the promotion to push it further.
10:18 When that wasn't an option, and Anthem decided they'd rather just fire Scott D'Amour,
10:23 D'Amour attempted to buy TNA, but his offer was rejected.
10:28 Talents were reportedly very upset at this firing, as many of them were loyal to Scott
10:33 D'Amour.
10:34 There were reports of Wrestling reporting that a separate talent call headed up by Gail
10:37 Kim and Tommy Dreamer was chaotic.
10:39 A couple of days ago, Sean Ross Sapp posted on Twitter that he had some TNA contract news
10:43 coming out, which ended up being Steve Macklin's deal with TNA is ending soon.
10:48 But around that same time, all of the members of the TNA roster started posting the same
10:53 hourglass emoji.
10:55 Josh Alexander, Chris Bay, Jordan Grace, Mike Bailey, Masha Slamovich, Giselle Short and
11:00 many others including ring crew like Dave Penza all tweeted the same thing.
11:05 It led to speculation that there is a potential TNA talent mutiny on the horizon.
11:10 Though, many have pointed out that Tommy Dreamer is also posting the same thing, which would
11:15 indicate this could be one big storyline work.
11:18 A storyline work about a real life situation?
11:20 TNA really is back!
11:22 However, it also comes at the same time that Anthem announced they have exercised their
11:27 one year option on Josh Alexander's contract, keeping him with the company until 2025.
11:32 Had Anthem not exercised that option, Alexander would be a free agent right now.
11:38 And in an update from Fightful Select, that's sort of what Alexander wanted.
11:43 Despite doing an interview with Sports Illustrated, who first broke the contract news that he
11:47 was happy to stay in TNA for another year, Sean Ross Sapp reports that while there were
11:50 rumours that he'd asked for his release from TNA, it was actually that Alexander had
11:54 requested that TNA not pick up his option.
11:58 Fightful report that Alexander was open to negotiate with TNA, but he also wanted to
12:02 survey the landscape and see what other deals he might be able to get.
12:06 Fightful Select write that there are no concerns from the company about Alexander meeting his
12:11 contractual obligations and working hard while he's there.
12:15 But what are some of the strangest kayfabe injuries you've ever seen in wrestling?
12:18 Well, Tempest counts down 10 of them in our latest parts fun known list.
12:22 Check it out right now.
