THE ACCLAIMED GHOST STORY COMES DRAMATICALLY ALIVE IN MALLATRATT’S INGENIOUS STAGE ADAPTATION.

Direct from the United Kingdom, with a cast from the West End of London, comes the second longest-running play in the history of British Theatre. Stephen Mallatratt adapts Susan Hill’s 1983 novel into a bone-chilling drama capturing its essence with masterful precision.
Obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, Arthur Kipps engages a skeptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. See it if you dare!
The partnership with Dark Hall Coffee was a perfect marriage. Known for its dark, moody aesthetic, Dark Hall Coffee felt like the perfect Phoenix space to extend the insight and experience of The Woman in Black into the community. All month long (Feb), Dark Hall Coffee will be offering The Woman in Black Latte and Black London Fog Macaron’s.

00:02 - The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix
00:07 is sponsored by Herberger Theater Center
00:09 and Dark Hall Coffee.
00:11 - I love a show and we are so excited to have
00:16 the president of the Herberger Theater here
00:18 to talk about their new show,
00:20 "The Woman in Black" playing right now.
00:23 Welcome Mark, thank you for being here today.
00:25 - Thank you very much for having me.
00:27 - So, which sounds really exciting, I wanna talk about
00:30 the Herberger just in general for those who maybe
00:32 haven't been down to visit you guys and see a show yet.
00:34 Tell us a little bit about you.
00:35 - Well, we're downtown, we're right in the heart
00:37 of downtown Phoenix.
00:38 We've been there for over 30 years
00:41 and had many, many different types of events
00:43 and performances and this year we're presenting
00:45 some theatrical work that's coming from
00:48 international places as well as doing local free events
00:52 outside almost every weekend.
00:54 - Oh, that's so fantastic.
00:55 And your location is so easy to spot
00:59 if you've ever been there because you have those
01:00 fantastic statues outside that really kind of
01:03 mark the theater that once you know that's where it is,
01:06 you can always spot it.
01:08 - Yes, and that is something that people will
01:10 know us for and you can say,
01:13 well, it's the place with the statues.
01:14 Oh yeah, I know that place.
01:16 - Exactly.
01:17 - But there's a lot going on downtown,
01:18 there's great restaurants around us.
01:19 If you go to our website, you can buy
01:21 discount parking so it's easy to park
01:23 and get into the theater.
01:25 And make a whole evening out of it as well.
01:27 - That is such a great point because I know sometimes
01:30 for myself included, I feel a little bit like,
01:32 oh man, going downtown, the parking, yada, yada, yada.
01:36 But you guys can do the discounted rates for parking.
01:38 There's a bunch of great areas down there
01:41 to go walk around, make an evening of it,
01:43 have a drink, have dinner.
01:45 But you guys are doing an incredible show right now
01:48 which is The Woman in Black.
01:49 So tell me a little bit about it.
01:51 - Well, it's an amazing story and thank you
01:53 for addressing the part.
01:54 - Of course, yes, this is why I wore the all black today.
01:58 - Yes, well, it's a great show.
02:00 It ran in the West End in London for 33 years, 34 years.
02:05 The second longest running show ever.
02:07 There's a reason why people kept going back
02:09 and then brought their children.
02:12 Saw it as part of a school show maybe
02:14 and then came back and came back.
02:16 Everybody likes to be scared, whether or not they admit it.
02:19 But everybody likes that little bit of tingle
02:21 as well as some jump scares.
02:23 And this show has all of that.
02:25 So it's an amazing story that really plays itself out
02:29 over the course of the time and you start learning
02:31 more and more about this mysterious woman in black
02:34 and how she has affected the people around her
02:39 and how they just need to tell their story.
02:44 They just need to tell it to you to make it more real.
02:48 - Wow, this sounds fantastic.
02:50 And what a great premise for a show
02:52 that they need to get their story out
02:55 because that's what the actors are doing on stage, right?
02:57 They're getting their story out
02:58 so you really feel like you are a part of it.
03:01 So you said it's the second longest running straight play.
03:05 And now tell me what the difference is
03:07 'cause I do know 'cause I'm a fellow thespian.
03:10 But for those who don't know the difference
03:12 between a musical and a straight play.
03:14 - Yeah, well, in this case, it is a play with spoken word
03:18 and they're explaining the whole story.
03:20 There's no singing that goes along with it.
03:21 And musicals will have singing
03:24 that will advance the story usually.
03:26 Sometimes they're called jukebox musicals
03:29 where it's just songs and by an artist or something.
03:32 But in this case, it's just telling you the story
03:35 and letting that play out
03:36 both on stage and in your imagination.
03:38 - And I'm sure that lends itself very well to this story
03:40 being that it's a little scary, a little mysterious.
03:44 So the just spoken word probably lends itself
03:47 very nicely to this story.
03:48 But speaking of musicals,
03:50 can you give us a little tease of some of the other shows
03:53 that you have coming up in your season?
03:56 - The big one that we're excited to be talking about
03:59 is "Mad Hatter the Musical."
04:01 And it's a brand new musical that is telling the tale
04:04 before Hatter gets to Wonderland, before Alice is there.
04:08 And what happens to make him mad and what happens
04:11 and how the story plays out to both in Wonderland
04:16 and out of Wonderland.
04:17 It's really an amazing story.
04:19 It's gonna be playing here.
04:20 World premiere in May at the Herberger
04:22 and on its way to New York and Broadway.
04:25 - That is incredible.
04:26 You guys have some really exciting stuff coming up,
04:28 including a partnership with Dark Hall Coffee.
04:32 So really quickly, tell me a little bit about that.
04:35 And then we're actually going to hear
04:36 from Dark Hall Coffee themselves.
04:37 - Oh, great.
04:38 Yeah, this is a wonderful partnership
04:39 because it really, their ambiance
04:42 and the way their coffee shop is
04:45 just lend itself really nicely to this show.
04:48 And so it's a great partnership.
04:49 You can go and enjoy a coffee and macaroon
04:52 and then come see the show later in the evening.
04:55 - That's so perfect.
04:56 All right, Mark, well, thank you so much
04:57 for all this information.
04:58 You can go to the Herberger website to learn more,
05:01 to get those parking passes and get tickets
05:03 to come see "The Woman in Black."
05:04 But right now, let's head out to Brad,
05:06 who is talking with Dark Hall Coffee
05:08 about the tasty treats inspired by "The Woman in Black."
05:11 Hey, Brad, tell us all about it.
05:13 - Lexi, you guys said it right there.
05:15 The Herberger's teamed up with Dark Hall Coffee
05:18 for some great drinks to go
05:20 with "The Woman in Black" production.
05:22 So let's head out live to Liz, who's there,
05:25 all dressed, ready to go as a lady in black.
05:28 Good morning, Liz.
05:28 How are ya?
05:29 Good morning, Liz.
05:34 Oh, can she not hear me?
05:40 Hi, Liz, can you hear me?
05:41 Yep, maybe. - I don't hear anything.
05:45 - She doesn't hear me?
05:46 Oh, well, there you go.
05:47 Well, what's happening is that they've teamed up together
05:49 with Herberger to make these amazing coffee drinks
05:51 in a cute little place right there
05:53 in the Coronado area in downtown Phoenix,
05:56 which is really nice.
05:57 Here goes some of the little--
05:58 - We are at Dark Hall Coffee.
06:00 We are on 12th Street and Oak
06:02 in the Coronado Historic District.
06:05 We are right on the corner
06:07 and have the Coronado Restaurant right next door.
06:10 We are doing this partnership with the Herberger.
06:13 Very excited to have them choose us to do this.
06:16 It really fits with our aesthetic,
06:17 which is, as you can see, also dark and moody.
06:21 And it brought a lot of people from the community
06:24 that we maybe would have never seen in our shop come in here
06:29 and our customers also becoming aware
06:31 of what the Herberger does, which has been amazing.
06:35 And the offerings that we have,
06:45 you probably saw we have our gluten-free
06:48 London Fog Macarons.
06:51 And London Fog is Earl Grey with added lavender.
06:54 And those are made here in-house daily.
06:56 And we also have the Woman in Black Latte.
06:59 And what that is is our black mocha with activated charcoal
07:05 and an Arcadia orange sugar cube,
07:07 which adds a little bit of citrus flavor,
07:10 a shot of espresso, and then steamed milk.
07:12 (sighing)
07:14 - Again, what are your hours?
07:19 - And the hours that we're open are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
07:26 seven days a week.
07:27 We are here to serve.
07:29 - I love it.
07:30 Liz, thank you very much.
07:31 I know we couldn't hear that first,
07:33 so thank you very much.
07:34 And again, it's the Dark Hall Coffee,
07:36 and you can catch them on IG.
07:38 Come on back.
07:38 We got more of the mix for you right after this.
07:41 (upbeat music)
07:44 - The proceeding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix
07:46 was sponsored by Herberger Theater Center
07:48 and Dark Hall Coffee.
