00:00 Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Huge pleasure
00:06 to speak to Paul McKenna, world-leading hypnotist and behavioural scientist. Now Paul, you're
00:11 on the road with a really crucial, vital-sounding new book, Success for Life, and we all want
00:16 that. And you're coming to Brighton fairly soon, March 5th. Now this is about potential,
00:22 isn't it? About the fact that we don't tend to fulfil our potential, that we sabotage
00:28 ourselves. Why do we do that? How far short do we fall, do you think?
00:32 Well you're absolutely right. People hold themselves back or they self-sabotage because
00:36 they have subconscious beliefs that maybe they're not worthy, or that if they started
00:40 to succeed it would all be too much. But also sometimes people just don't think big enough
00:44 and grand enough, outside of the normal parameters of what they think they can achieve. And the
00:49 great thing with the live event that I'm doing in Brighton is it's a coaching session, right?
00:56 So I'm going to do everything I would do with you if we were sat in this room here
01:00 to get you to fulfil more of your potential. There's just a few hundred other people present.
01:06 And so I do demonstrations with people on the stage, I turn and I do it with everybody.
01:10 Of course, no one has to do anything they don't want to do. And I hypnotise the entire
01:15 audience to feel fantastic by the end of the evening, and then do selfies and chat with
01:21 everybody.
01:22 But you were saying briefly just now, it's an inside-out job, it has to come from within
01:25 them.
01:26 It's got to come from within you, yeah. You have much more resources, you know, you can
01:30 have more confidence, more clarity about what it is you want, more determination to go for
01:34 what it is you want. And also, happiness is a neurochemical event. So as a modern therapist,
01:41 I can coach, I can talk to your unconscious mind and get it to crank up the good feelings,
01:47 crank up the good brain chemistry, so that you feel good for no particular reason, other
01:52 than we have told your subconscious mind to make it happen.
01:55 And it's past events, damaging events in childhood, perhaps, that are holding us back.
02:01 Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you know, if you get told as a child, you know, you've got
02:05 no artistic ability or be quiet, no one wants to hear what you have to say, there is, you
02:10 know, your fear of public speaking, if it's told to you at a moment of emotional intensity
02:14 by an authority figure.
02:17 But the thing is, that can be undone fairly quickly. And indeed, you know, the point of
02:21 the Success For Life book, and the event in Brighton, is to get people to move past their
02:28 limitations, and to suddenly see greater possibilities, and to go away feeling really energized, not
02:35 just not just motivated there and then, because you know, that doesn't last, but to have tools
02:40 and techniques you can use. So if you're feeling overwhelmed, you suddenly hang on, stop, do
02:44 it. Oh, yeah, I feel more in control. I'm going to be able to handle this.
02:49 And you're saying it's a relatively short, three, short read, three hours, and you'll
02:53 be thinking 2024 is going to be fantastic for me.
02:56 Absolutely. Yeah, either read in three hours or listen to it as an audiobook. And if you
03:00 do the processes, there is not a chance on this earth, you won't have greater self belief,
03:05 greater clarity about what it is you really want. More determination, as I say, greater
03:09 happiness and joy, and 2024 will seem so much more compelling. It'll be really a year of
03:16 opportunity for you.
03:17 Fantastic to start thinking along those lines so early in the year too.
03:22 Absolutely.
03:23 Brilliant. Really lovely to talk to you again.
03:25 Thank you very much.
03:26 Thank you so much. Thank you.
