00:02 - This morning we're walking where we started
00:08 at a lap of Tasmania, looking for platypus in Latrobe.
00:12 I feel like this place is so special to us
00:16 and really moved us in a way
00:18 that we haven't experienced before.
00:20 - Not far from here is where we were first confronted
00:23 with the reality of Tasmania's title
00:26 as the roadkill capital of the world.
00:29 From the first day we arrived in Tasmania,
00:31 the roadkill situation was extremely confronting.
00:35 After hopping off the ferry in Devonport,
00:37 we made the drive out to a campsite in Rauta.
00:39 We noticed our first animal within the first few minutes,
00:42 only for there to be way more within the 20 minute drive.
00:46 - The roadkill situation was not something we could ignore.
00:52 So we began looking into what we could do.
00:55 We decided to complete the rescue training course
00:58 with Bonorong so that we'd be prepared
01:01 to help an injured animal if we were ever in that situation.
01:04 Little did we know how much that training
01:06 would make a difference on our lives.
01:09 - So after doing our rescue training with Bonorong,
01:11 we ended up signing up as wildlife rescuers.
01:15 Close to Launceston, there's a baby brushtail possum
01:19 that needs someone to hold onto it
01:21 while they wait for a carer.
01:22 - You're gonna have to...
01:24 (bird squawking)
01:26 I know, baby.
01:27 So we're gonna drop this little guy off to a temporary carer.
