The 1980 film adaptation of Henry Devere Stackpoole's novel, The Blue Lagoon, was the first to receive a "R" rating. The core storyline remains unchanged. Two young children, a boy and a girl, are stranded on a lush tropical island. They are looked for by fellow castaway Leo McKern. When he dies, the kids, played by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins in minimal attire, are left with just each other. When they reach adolescence, they fall madly in love. The rich photography of The Blue Lagoon, which was heavily reshaped and reedited before its debut, is its main feature.
