Sea Otter Classic and scoured the festival for all the latest tech. We found lots of 3D printed tech, some prototype bikes and some new ways to stay cool.

00:02 We are here at Sea Otter Classic,
00:08 which is North America's biggest bike show.
00:10 There's tons of cool brands here,
00:11 and that also means there's tons of brand new cool tech.
00:14 So, we're gonna go around the whole show,
00:16 find it all, and share it all with you.
00:18 (upbeat music)
00:20 So we've come over to Superstrata,
00:25 and what we've got here is a completely 3D printed bike.
00:29 Now, as you can see, you are missing that seat tube.
00:33 Now, the reason they've done that is actually purely
00:35 just to make it pretty eye-catching,
00:37 which I think we can all agree is a pretty bold design.
00:39 Now, this is the first thing that they're offering,
00:42 and they are all completely customizable.
00:44 So they're made to order, and they're gonna be made
00:47 for each and every person's individual geometry.
00:50 Now, as you can see, the tubing is pretty fat,
00:52 and the reason for that is because of that missing seat tube,
00:55 so they had to really bulk up
00:57 those seat stays and chain stays
01:00 to make sure that it was strong enough, basically.
01:02 Now, you might be wondering about price,
01:04 and these actually start off around the $3,000 mark,
01:09 and they can go all the way up to $7,000,
01:11 but that is purely spec-dependent.
01:13 Now, at the moment, they're only offering them
01:15 in this hybrid build.
01:17 However, in the future, there's a good chance
01:19 they're gonna be moving into that road market.
01:21 The one thing that I did find slightly surprising
01:24 was that the weight of this frame
01:25 is actually one and a half kilos.
01:27 So for carbon fiber, it's not massively light,
01:30 so it'd be interesting to see
01:31 if they can bring the weight down for a road model.
01:34 But still, very cool, and it's very interesting to see
01:37 that 3D-printed technology is really starting to come alive,
01:41 and what's actually capable,
01:43 'cause as you'll also be able to see,
01:45 we've got a built-in rear light here,
01:47 and at the front, we've got a built-in front light,
01:53 and it really opens up that question of,
01:55 if you can build something completely custom,
01:58 how integrated can you keep things?
02:01 But either way, it's a very cool-looking thing.

02:06 So I've popped on over to Kogel.
02:15 Now, Kogel are famous for their ceramic bearings,
02:19 and I think they might also now be famous
02:22 for their pretty jazzy-looking setups
02:24 on their pulley wheels.
02:26 Now, amazingly, you can fully customize these.
02:29 So you can have any color jockey wheel,
02:32 with cage, with bolts, with even the covers,
02:35 like these ones here, and then even the back of it as well
02:38 can be changed to be a different color.
02:40 So you can end up with a pretty wacky design.
02:42 You've got a few different color options there,
02:44 and like I said, all of these individual pieces
02:48 can be completely customized,
02:49 so you can really match it to your bike,
02:51 which I think is a really nice feature.
02:54 So there we go.
02:58 If we need any proof about how smooth their bearings are,
03:00 I think that perfectly illustrates it.
03:02 Now, inside that bearing there
03:04 is their full ceramic bearing,
03:05 so that means you've both got ceramic balls
03:07 and ceramic races.
03:09 Now, they also offer all their bearings as hybrids,
03:11 which means that you have a steel race and ceramic balls.
03:15 Now, obviously, this means that you essentially get
03:18 that every single day speed and performance.
03:21 This kind of a bearing, which is the full ceramic,
03:24 that's gonna be perfect for your race day bike,
03:27 your Sunday best, when you've got ideal weather conditions.
03:30 But, for example, we have here,
03:33 this is one of their hybrid bearings.
03:36 So there you go, that's the real difference
03:37 between the two.
03:38 As you can see on the right there,
03:40 we've got that full ceramic bearing,
03:42 and then on the left, you've got the steel races
03:44 with that seal.
03:45 But it means that it's gonna last a lot longer,
03:47 and it's gonna be a lot more resilient to weather.

03:53 So, carrying on with that 3D printed theme,
03:59 we have got some 3D printed helmets.
04:01 Now, these ones are only available in the US at the moment.
04:04 These are all completely custom made,
04:06 and they use this hex pattern inside
04:09 for that main construction.
04:11 And you can also see, and you might be able to notice,
04:14 that it is missing a retention system.
04:16 Now, that is because they have built in some springs
04:19 into the shell itself,
04:21 and then you've got these pads which sit on your head,
04:23 meaning that the shell of the helmet itself
04:25 floats on top of your head.
04:27 It's an interesting concept.
04:28 They are gonna be available with vinyl wraps,
04:31 so they're not all just gonna be black,
04:32 and you can fully customise it for whatever you want.
04:35 It is very interesting to see
04:37 all of this 3D printed tech here,

04:51 Okay, so we've come across to Vitus,
04:53 and they have got this on display.
04:55 This is a prototype bike, as you can see,
04:58 and this is the Venon,
04:59 and they are dubbing this their all road bike.
05:01 Now, when it comes out, which will be in 2023,
05:05 they're gonna be doing it in two different versions.
05:07 They're gonna do an all road gravel version,
05:09 but then they're also gonna be releasing it
05:11 as a road version.
05:12 There's gonna be a couple of different specs on it,
05:14 but I was just talking to the guys here,
05:16 and they're saying that they've taken a lot of learnings
05:18 from ZX1, and their other kind of race bikes.
05:22 So this really is gonna be for your fast gravel,
05:24 quick racing.
05:25 That is what it's gonna be for.
05:27 So there's a few little nice touches on here.
05:30 You'll be able to run it as a one by,
05:31 and you can see there,
05:32 you've got the removable braze on mount.
05:35 You've got the drop seat stays.
05:36 You've got the fully integrated head tube.
05:39 So, I mean, as a bike,
05:40 I think we can all agree that it looks really quite clean.
05:43 Now, one thing that they did mention
05:45 is that this hasn't been a UCI approved frame.
05:48 So it won't be able to be used in any of the UCI races.
05:51 Potentially those rules might change
05:53 as the need for wider gravel tires increases.
05:58 And with that new world series
05:59 that's gonna be happening later this year,
06:01 the rules may have to change
06:04 to allow bike manufacturers to meet more of those rules.
06:07 Now, as you can see, finishing kit,
06:09 we've got prime wheels,
06:10 we've got prime handlebars, and an FSA stem.
06:14 This is the same one actually,
06:15 and the same custom cover that's used on the ZX1.
06:18 I think it's fair to say it does look really nice.
06:21 I think it's that integration
06:22 which just really helps clean it up.
06:24 But yeah, there we go.
06:26 This will be coming soon.

06:31 So I've just popped on over to Fizik,
06:39 and here they have this saddle,
06:41 which has been recently released as of today,
06:44 but obviously by the time you're watching this,
06:45 it would have already been out for a little bit of time.
06:47 Now, as you can see,
06:48 it's utilizing their 3D printed construction method.
06:52 Now this one here does have carbon rails
06:54 with a composite shell.
06:55 However, I have been told
06:57 that they will be offering a double zero version
06:59 fairly soon with a carbon shell.
07:02 So you'll be able to shed even more weight off of it.
07:05 But what this allows you to do,
07:06 and with this construction method,
07:08 they can build up the density of the supports
07:11 in different areas around the saddle,
07:13 and they can do it over different and really small sections,
07:18 meaning that the support is graduated.
07:20 So where you need it thicker,
07:22 where your sit bones are gonna be seated,
07:24 then they can really build up quite thick.
07:25 But in the middle,
07:26 where you've got your pressure relief channel,
07:28 obviously they can make it quite thin.
07:30 So it's got a lot of give.
07:31 But come to the sides,
07:32 come onto the wings,
07:33 and yeah, really, really supportive.
07:35 This is gonna be available in two different sizes.
07:38 Really interesting to see actually.
07:39 I think the double zero version
07:42 with that full carbon shell
07:43 is gonna be really, really very cool to see.

07:48 So I've come over to VeloTose,
07:53 and they really are starting to branch out now
07:55 with what they're offering.
07:56 And what we've got here is a vest,
07:58 which you can wear indoors or outdoors.
08:01 And what you've got here,
08:02 you've got a few pockets.
08:03 You've got a couple on the back here,
08:05 and then you've also got them on the side.
08:08 And now this vest comes with ice packs,
08:12 so you can get those frozen in your freezer,
08:14 pop them into the vest,
08:15 and then if you've got a particularly
08:16 strenuous indoor session,
08:18 then you're gonna stay super, super cool.
08:20 Now the guys here were also saying
08:21 that you could also pack those pockets full of ice.
08:24 So when you're out on the road, outdoors,
08:26 in a particularly hot climate,
08:27 that's also gonna really help keep you cool.
08:30 And it's an incredibly important thing,
08:32 especially if you're outdoors,
08:33 just from a safety point of view,
08:35 but it also just means you're a lot more comfortable.
08:37 So for those indoor sessions,
08:39 being able to stay cool is obviously something
08:40 that's actually quite tough to do.
08:42 Now, obviously there's plenty of great fans out there,
08:44 but this takes it to a whole new level
08:46 and just keeps your core incredibly cool.
08:48 So yeah, really nice to see from Velotos,
08:50 and I'll be really keen to try one of these very soon.

08:55 So we are clearly at Stagis here.
09:00 Now we're gonna jump inside very quickly
09:02 to look at their brand new computer.
09:03 And as you can see right here,
09:05 we have got the brand new Dash M200.
09:09 Now it also comes in the L200, which is the larger size.
09:13 So you get that bigger screen
09:14 with a bigger battery capacity.
09:16 But the key features with this one
09:18 and that kind of headline feature
09:19 is that they offer automatic profiles.
09:22 So what that's gonna mean is it's gonna auto populate
09:25 your data screen when you're riding.
09:27 Now it is also fully customizable.
09:29 So should you want to just put in your own data fields
09:32 and customize it via the app,
09:34 that is something you can definitely do.
09:35 But if you're changing the computer between bikes,
09:38 then it's gonna mean that maybe you don't have
09:41 all the same sentences from one bike to the other.
09:43 So it will mean that with the automatic profile,
09:46 it's gonna also populate
09:47 and you're not gonna have blank data fields
09:49 and it's gonna utilize the screen space that is available.
09:54 Now this one is incredibly easy to configure
09:56 and that is because one,
09:57 you've got these four buttons at the bottom here,
09:59 which make it incredibly easy to navigate,
10:00 but it also comes with an app.
10:01 So you can control all of your data screens via the app,
10:05 and you can also drop locations via the app
10:08 and then beam that route over to the head unit.
10:10 So it's an incredibly easy thing to use actually.
10:13 And this is being distributed via stages
10:16 and also the giant network as well.
10:18 So if you have a giant dealer or stages near to you,
10:20 then this will be very easy to get your hands on.
10:23 It looks pretty good.
10:23 I think actually I'm not a massive fan of the gloss screen.
10:28 I think I do prefer something
10:30 which is a little bit less reflective.
10:32 I think it is gonna mean that occasionally
10:33 you are gonna get some glare off of that screen.
10:35 That being said, it still looks quite nice.
10:38 As you'll also be able to see,
10:39 this uses the standard Garmin quarter turn mount.
10:42 So if you've already got a Garmin mount,
10:44 this will fit straight on there, nice and easy.
10:47 Now, one more thing about that mount
10:49 is that you can also mount it the other way around.
10:52 So if you wanna run your dash horizontally,
10:57 you can do that as well.
11:01 So it is actually rather versatile.

11:09 Okay, so I've just jumped into Lezyne
11:11 and one product that they've come out with,
11:13 which is gonna be hitting stores fairly soon
11:16 is this one here.
11:17 And this is the Lezyne Pocket Torque Drive.
11:20 Now it's a brand new product from them.
11:22 And essentially, this, as you can see, it's pretty small
11:25 and it does come with a frame strap.
11:27 So you're gonna be able to put that on the bike
11:30 and essentially it's gonna allow you to torque your bolts
11:33 kind of on the trail or on the road or on the gravel,
11:35 wherever you are in a really compact, neat little way.
11:38 So you've got the actual drive here itself.
11:42 You've got a whole bunch of adapters there.
11:46 You've got this little tool here,
11:49 which sits towards the top here.
11:51 And that's what allows you to alter the torque setting.
11:56 And then you've also got this little bar here,
11:58 which then allows you just to get a little bit of leverage,
12:01 which slides into the end here.
12:04 You can see that there.
12:05 And essentially that's gonna just allow you
12:08 to get that leverage and use that tool
12:09 with a bit more ease.
12:10 So yeah, really nice little offering there.
12:12 And yeah, just gonna allow you to make sure
12:14 that whenever you're tightening your bolt,
12:16 you're doing it to the correct torque setting.
12:18 So there we have it.
12:21 That was all the brand new tech that I found
12:23 at the Sea Otter Classic Festival.
12:25 I particularly really liked the 3D printed tech
12:27 and I think it shows how the industry
12:28 could be moving forward with innovation.
