01:23 - And State of Canada's DI Chair, Annie Hillen.
01:27 (audience applauding)
01:30 And we also are lucky to have our two coaches here
01:32 from Day One, Cindy Stafford and Bonnie Whitside.
01:36 (audience applauding)
01:38 Our President, Vicki Webster.
01:41 (audience applauding)
01:44 And I'd like to introduce a special lady
01:47 that founded this event 40 years ago.
01:51 She's volunteered with the club,
01:53 and have children who also stay here.
01:56 And we would not be standing here today
01:58 if it was not for the hard work and dedication
02:01 they put in over the years.
02:03 I'm pleased to introduce you to Sandra Kaisling.
02:07 (audience applauding)
02:10 And the other lady that was also involved
02:15 was Wanda McNurdo, and she wasn't able to be here today,
02:19 but we also would like to give her a good thanks also.
02:22 (audience applauding)
02:25 I'm very happy today to see that such a,
02:34 also thank the Lord, a bunch of skaters here.
02:41 When we started, I had a cohort,
02:45 and I would organize this ADL.
02:50 And we went to ADL to try to get some money,
02:53 and we weren't very sure at first,
02:57 but then they gave us money,
03:00 and we still haven't given money for 40 years.
03:03 (audience applauding)
03:06 So, Wanda McNurdo and myself
03:11 were in the figure skating club here in Kensington,
03:15 and we thought there should be a place
03:17 for these young skaters to start competing,
03:22 and that's why I got started.
03:24 In the first year, there was 371 skaters came to compete.
03:29 (audience applauding)
03:32 So, it's been ongoing for 40 years,
03:35 and it's still alive and strong,
03:39 and I'd like to congratulate
03:42 Kensington Club for organizing again
03:45 and keeping it going.
03:47 And the flowers.
03:49 (audience applauding)
03:52 So, we got some of our special guests.
04:06 We're gonna say a few words,
04:08 and we're gonna open up the doors.
04:10 Mike J. Robbie, our ADL sponsor.
04:13 (audience applauding)
04:16 - Thank you, Rosalie.
04:20 I wanna welcome those who worship there,
04:24 and Pete Heath and Emily Mack,
04:26 and Amy there as well, Steve P. I.
04:28 I will say it's an honor to work for a company
04:31 that sponsored this event the last 40 years.
04:34 I myself have not been doing it for 40 years,
04:36 but I have been here for 24 of them.
04:39 (audience applauding)
04:42 But I just gotta put it in a word.
04:44 Like, even though the name of this event
04:46 has changed over the years,
04:49 one thing is still the same.
04:51 The kids call it the ADL Day.
04:53 So, it's great recognition for that,
04:57 and I just wanna put a big thank you out to all the parents
05:00 and grandparents and friends and moms and everybody
05:04 who get these kids to the rink.
05:06 So, it's a big obligation.
05:08 I know I've gone through it.
05:09 My daughter went through this as well.
05:11 So, it's a great honor,
05:13 and I just wanna say thank you again for 40 years,
05:15 and hopefully for 40 more.
05:17 Thank you.
05:18 (audience applauding)
05:21 - And the next, we're gonna go to the worship room.
05:25 Haley, please.
05:26 - Thanks, Rosalie.
05:29 Well, I'd like to welcome everyone here,
05:31 and congratulations to all the participants
05:35 and the volunteers, and especially to Sandra and Wanda
05:40 for getting this program started 40 years ago.
05:43 (audience applauding)
05:46 And of course, thanks to ADL
05:49 for being a sponsor for 40 years.
05:51 I'm going to say very little more,
05:55 except that it's good to be in the,
05:58 I guess here with all these distinguished guests,
06:01 and it's good to welcome you all here
06:03 to the Town of Pendicombe,
06:05 and to the Freddie Green Center,
06:07 and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
06:10 Thank you.
06:11 (audience applauding)
06:14 - And next, we have our MLA,
06:17 Donald O'Connor of the Union K.
06:19 - Good afternoon, everyone.
06:23 It's an honor to be here, and enjoy your special day.
06:26 I wanna take a moment to congratulate
06:29 the 89th stagers that are here today,
06:32 which is tremendous to see.
06:34 From my understanding, we seem to have more stagers
06:37 every year at this event, so that's great.
06:39 Thanks to all the parents, grandparents,
06:42 brothers, sisters, everybody that provides the time
06:46 and commitment to be here as well.
06:49 To all the volunteers, Kelly, Rosalie, Uncle Boar,
06:54 thank you for everything you do.
06:56 Also, ADL, 40 years, tremendous support.
07:01 They're a pillar of our community and do so much,
07:03 so thank you, ADL.
07:05 And last but not least, on here,
07:07 there's a crew that made the trip to PEI
07:10 from New Brunswick, who's can't exist.
07:13 Welcome to PEI, welcome to Kensington,
07:16 and I hope you enjoy your time here.
07:18 Thank you.
07:19 (audience applauding)
07:20 - Thank you, Matt.
07:22 And our MP, Jamal Braddock, and our MP, Donald.
07:26 - I'm not sure there's too much left to say,
07:30 but first of all, this is Casey,
07:32 I know Mr. Murdoch's not here today,
07:34 but 40 years ago and seeing what your vision
07:38 transpired into is pretty amazing.
07:41 Any event that lasts 40 years is pretty amazing.
07:44 Congratulations to you.
07:46 Congratulations to all the organizers.
07:49 There's a lot of volunteers that it takes
07:51 to put on an event like this.
07:53 Welcome to Crispin's Sis, the stagers.
07:57 I've been watching some of you already,
07:59 and it's great to see a little bit of anxiety
08:03 and nervousness, but you're there to compete.
08:05 But most importantly, make sure you take time
08:08 to make some friendships, because it will be a memory.
08:12 Thank you.
08:12 (audience applauding)
08:16 - And then, not last, but not least,
08:19 we have Amy McMillan, our chair for State Canada PEI.
08:23 (audience applauding)
08:28 - On behalf of State Canada Prince Edward Island,
08:31 it is my pleasure to welcome all skaters,
08:33 and coaches, officials, volunteers, and spectators
08:38 to the 2024 PEI ADL Surfskate Championships.
08:43 This event continues to play an important role
08:46 in developing sports figure skating
08:48 for all our young skaters on Prince Edward Island.
08:51 I'd like to wish all the skaters
08:53 an exciting and enjoyable event.
08:56 I hope that today is a memorable day
08:58 for all of you as you celebrate
08:59 your accomplishments in skating.
09:02 Be sure to enjoy yourself while celebrating
09:04 your own personal goals as well.
09:07 This competition is made possible
09:10 due to the devotion of the organizing committee.
09:12 We are very thankful that this event is possible,
09:15 and this is due to the planning efforts
09:17 of our competition committee.
09:19 I wish to extend a very special thanks
09:21 to the many volunteers for all their countless hours
09:24 and hard work in organizing this event.
09:27 (audience applauding)
09:30 Without you, and with you this day
09:33 is a fun-filled experience for the skaters.
09:36 A sincere thank you to the officials as well,
09:39 who without your support, expertise,
09:41 and enthusiasm for the sport,
09:43 this event would not be as successful as it is.
09:46 Thank you to the Kensington Skating Club
09:50 for hosting this event for the last 40 years.
09:53 This event holds fond memories
09:55 for so many skaters over the years.
09:57 Without the continued support of the club
09:59 and community of Kensington, this would not be possible.
10:03 So for those of us who have been around
10:05 for either all or most of the 40 years of this event,
10:09 it has always been known to our island skating community
10:12 as ADL.
10:14 I remember growing up as a skater myself,
10:16 and the excitement that this event brought.
10:19 And I remember also feeling that same excitement
10:22 as I watched my daughter compete here at ADL
10:25 for her first event a few years ago.
10:27 I continue to see that excitement year after year
10:33 in all of our skaters who are competing.
10:35 This event, as most of you call it, ADL,
10:40 is a result of Amalgamated Dairies Limited
10:42 being our major sponsor for all 40 years.
10:46 So I'd like to thank Amalgamated Dairies Limited
10:49 for your involvement in this event,
10:51 and the competition for the past four years.
10:54 Your continued support over the years
10:56 has helped in the development of our grassroots skaters.
10:59 This has been greatly appreciated
11:00 by all of our skating families.
11:03 Thank you.
11:03 (audience applauding)
11:07 - And I will welcome Cindy Stafford to the podium
11:13 to say a few words on behalf of the coaches of Kenticon.
11:17 (audience chattering)
11:20 - On behalf of Ana and myself,
11:24 it has been a wonderful opportunity
11:26 to be a part of the ADL Championships
11:28 over the past 40 years.
11:30 I'm gonna give you a little history
11:31 about ADL and the championships.
11:34 In the beginning, ADL was a Can Skate
11:37 pre-preliminary event where skaters had to qualify
11:40 in the top two in their club competition,
11:44 which were held at each of the island clubs.
11:48 Then they would progress on to ADL.
11:51 Once again, it was a big honor to get to go here.
11:54 In the early years, coaches from across the island
11:59 did individual solos for all levels,
12:02 and the programs were 30 seconds to a minute and a half.
12:06 As ADL evolved, we went to setback on solos
12:11 for the Can Skate level,
12:13 much like the Skate Canada LMA event that clubs host now.
12:18 The pre-preliminary event still had individual solos.
12:21 At times through the years,
12:23 ADL hosted dance, skills, skate throw,
12:27 team events, and individual events.
12:30 Fast forward to present day,
12:34 star one, two, three skaters skated to standard
12:38 to be awarded bronze, silver, or gold.
12:41 On behalf of Bonnie and I,
12:43 we'd like to thank the P.I. section, ADL,
12:47 and the Kendrick and Mary Figure Skating Club,
12:49 and all the many volunteers
12:51 who have kept this wonderful event alive.
12:54 Thank you.
12:55 (audience applauding)
12:58 - Thank you, Cindy.
13:00 And so I would like to thank all the special guests
13:04 for being here today and showing your support
13:07 for our event and our special members.
13:11 Lastly, before we continue with this event,
13:14 Skate Canada, P.I., and all the skating clubs
13:18 would like to thank ADL for their support
13:21 and sponsorship throughout the past 40 years.
13:24 We are honored to be presenting them here today
13:26 with a plaque to give them a great big thank you,
13:29 and I think we should give them a great big applause.
13:32 (audience applauding)
13:35 (audience chattering)
13:38 Thank you for everyone for being here today,
14:00 and let's continue with the event.
