In the film, Doctor Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) relocates with his family to Maine and meets Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne), a kind local. After the Creeds' cat is inadvertently killed, Crandall suggests Louis to bury it near the old pet cemetery. The cat comes back to life, but its personality has altered for the worse. When Louis' son, Gage (Miko Hughes), dies suddenly, Louis resolves to bury his remains in the same location, despite Crandall's concerns and Louis' visions of a deceased patient.
