00:00 A latest Office for National Statistics data suggests that these areas with an LS postcode
00:09 are the richest when looking at average household incomes. At the top of the list is Old Woodley,
00:15 a suburb five miles north of central Leeds, which is home to a number of well-respected
00:20 schools, golf clubs and local amenities. We bobbed in to three businesses to discover
00:25 what it's like to be based here.
00:27 My name's Maxwell Roberts. The business is Headrow Gallery, which is a business which
00:32 was established 124 years ago now. It was originally on the headrow, moved up to its
00:39 Old Woodley, north Leeds position in 1976 when Leeds pedestrianised. Old Woodley's a
00:45 great hub. We've got the Leeds Grammar School, of course, which is an amazing campus, which
00:50 is only less than half a mile from here. Across the road we've got Moortown Golf Club, which
00:54 hosted the first Ryder Cup in the UK. There's great pubs around, there's some great restaurants
01:00 even on the parade here, and an award-winning hairdresser next door to us as well. There's
01:07 some great people around here and I hope we'll be here for many years.
01:12 Gourmet's been running about 120 years. It started in, I think it was North Street, city
01:17 centre, then it moved to Chapel Town, and then in 1989 it moved up here to Old Woodley.
01:25 We're a kosher shop. We're the only kosher butcher deli in Yorkshire. All our customers
01:30 are the friendliest you can meet. We get to know them not just on a job level or as customers,
01:39 we get to know them as friends. A lot of people stereotype and think everyone who lives in
01:43 Old Woodley is rich. They're not. Yes, it might be affluent, but that's because maybe
01:49 we keep our houses nice and there's some nice cars, but I think there is other areas of
01:55 Leeds where our are affluent.
01:57 It's been a real privilege actually to work in Old Woodley. I've been a saloon owner here
02:01 for over 35 years and I've worked in a lot of places nationally around the country and
02:07 I have to say there's nowhere quite like Old Woodley. Fantastic people, a great eclectic
02:12 mix of all different types of people. Yeah, been very loyal, been very supportive with
02:19 fundraising and yeah, so I can't speak highly enough for the community of Old Woodley. Yes,
02:26 people do think it's a bit of a stockbroker belt and it's like part of the, you know,
02:30 part of the golden mile, but there's a real mix. 35 years ago we started here with zero
02:36 clients actually and now we have over 2,500 active clients. It's great for the airport,
02:42 it's great for the motorway and you're not far from lots of amenities really, so it's
02:52 house prices are maintaining as well and it's great for education like I say, so all round
02:59 it's fantastic.
