A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

00:00 We're both very naughty.
00:02 Well you're very naughty. I think you'll find I'm a rather pious Christian woman.
00:05 That's exactly what this film's about!
00:07 I'm afraid it was a gob shot.
00:09 She's heinous.
00:10 Oi!
00:11 Oh, you wankers!
00:13 Queen Victoria's son.
00:15 The kicks you make look like they've fallen out of some sheep's arsehole.
00:18 Better.
00:20 We're in a film called Wicked Little Letters. We play neighbours.
00:24 Yeah.
00:25 This one lives with her mum and dad and although she's in her late forties she weirdly sleeps in a bed at the end of her parents' beds.
00:32 And we can hear the joyful goings on next door.
00:35 Edith introduces Rose to the ways of the world of this little town.
00:41 She's got so much life in her and she just loves going to the pub and she loves cursing and smoking and drinking.
00:48 Oh shit!
00:49 Language you just used out loud!
00:51 Fuck me!
00:52 Indoors!
00:53 Right beside this nun.
00:55 One day some poison pen letters start arriving in Edith's house and it's shocking. They are foul-mouthed.
01:07 You fuck CS, old whore.
01:09 Brilliant.
01:10 Everyone assumes it's Rose Gooding.
01:12 Where is she?
01:13 Who lives next door.
01:14 Who lives next door.
01:15 And are they from her?
01:16 Yeah.
01:17 Why would I send a letter when I can just say it?
01:20 It's just these two neighbours who are quite different but actually there's a lot that they had in common.
01:25 Likeable in many ways. We became friends.
01:28 Edith and Rose, these characters that you would never sort of put together in real life.
01:32 Coming together with empathy and love, that's what's powerful about the movie.
01:36 It felt really special to have two people who already had so much respect for each other.
01:40 It couldn't have been easier between them.
01:42 That feeling at the monitors of watching their performances and just being flabbergasted by how good it was.
01:47 And every time it just catches me off guard by the way that they've put this foul language together.
01:52 Oi!
01:53 I remember the main standoff.
01:55 I could see Theo's excited by I being like, "Yes, yes, yes!"
02:00 Both of us were just at each other's throats.
02:02 It's kind of like watching them spa together.
02:04 You ran at me and said, "Daft old fart, big slippery one."
02:08 That's a bit much. Starting quite high, don't know where to go from there.
02:12 What are you doing?
02:13 I'm just teaching you how to swear proper.
02:14 And then seeing them off camera was even nicer.
02:17 When they came together, they just have this explosive chemistry.
02:22 Everybody thinks, "Oh, that must be you."
02:24 It's not. To play that kind of funny reality takes a lot of thought.
02:29 We were unbelievably lucky to get the two people that we wanted for those two parts.
02:34 I've just talked a lot. I'm sorry.
02:35 No, it's brilliant.
02:36 Go on, you talk.
02:37 No, you're brilliant, Anna. You're brilliant.
02:38 I'm tough.
02:42 You did a really nice job, didn't you?
02:44 Yeah, we did.
