00:00 What I want the government to do is eradicate the selling of gas in the community.
00:07 It's very very risky. They should stop it. In the olden days they don't allow gas to be sold within the vicinity of a woman being.
00:15 It's very very risky because what happened yesterday was so bad to talk about.
00:25 Following the fire explosion at Agbado Road towing bus stop Ijo Shaga on Tuesday night, we decided to visit the scene to get more information.
00:33 Here's what people had to say.
00:35 A gas delivery van came to offload some gas for the shop and in the process they left a bottle on the road which was eaten by a maruwa and that caused the problem.
00:50 It happened around 10 or past 10. We were inside because I live very close here, like two houses from here.
00:59 So we heard an explosion. Boom! Boom! We even thought it was an armed robber that was gunshot.
01:07 So most people were just rushing, rushing. Later the explosion continued. Exploding, exploding.
01:14 So everybody just rushed out. We even thought it was a carousel. There's a filling station beside us here.
01:21 So we thought it was a filling station. Once we got out we saw this gas.
01:26 But what had happened was the person that sells gas, a gas shop, a vehicle brought loads of gas for them.
01:35 So as they were offloading it, one of the gas cylinders fell down and busted into fire and it consumed all the shops there.
01:46 And then all the cylinder, as it was exploding, the fire also went across the road to consume the shops over there.
01:57 So it was a disaster. Millions of money lost.
02:04 According to what people are saying, there's a gas line opposite my shop here.
02:14 The gas line, they come and offload the gas to the shop. Along the line, as they are offloading the gas, it now falls.
02:21 They have already offloaded it. One has fallen on top of the second one and it exploded.
02:27 Although different people have different accounts of what exactly happened before the explosion, we can confirm it was definitely a gas explosion.
02:36 It is fortunate to report that there is no casualty but several individuals sustained injuries during the incident.
02:44 We already closed. So we were at the other shop there where we had the gas.
02:49 The gas came through the smoke. So before we knew it, the thing exploded after one after each other.
02:57 So we couldn't take anything out of here because there were a lot of machines there.
03:01 The gas shop is around this place. So we don't have anything to do than just to escape.
03:09 It is also noteworthy to state that the Lagos State Government has banned gas and flammable substances from being sold in residential areas to avert situations like this.
03:19 The government has already said it already that they don't want people selling these in a residential area.
03:25 There is a law in Lagos State pertaining to this but there is no enforcement.
03:29 This place ought to have been sealed up before this thing happened.
03:33 It is only enforcement. They need to enforce it. We still have similar ones all over. So they should do something about it.
03:39 It is simple. People should not sell gas or refill gas in residential areas.
03:45 Residents and victims are crying out to the government to come to their aid while some of them praise the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service for doing a good job and responding on time.
03:55 We called the firefighters and they came. The response was good.
04:03 Because all the radio stations, everybody was calling the fire station and they came.
04:09 But you know, fire is caused by gas. It burns faster. So that's why it was like this.
04:15 They tried their best. Even though after there was no more water, the other one came in fast. So they really tried to do something.
04:25 People selling gas should not be around. They should not stay around because it is very risky.
04:31 See what has happened now. It has cost us millions of Naira.
04:35 As the community struggles with the aftermath of the tragic event, it highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and greater support from the government.
04:45 Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this challenging time.
