Between The Eers: Shutdown Beanie Shut Out

00:10 It seems like every day on here I'm complaining about something,
00:13 I'm yelling at somebody and well today's no different.
00:17 Yeah, welcome into between the ears.
00:19 Good Wednesday morning, I'm Skylar Kellyanne of Mountaineers now here on
00:23 between the ears and yesterday.
00:26 The NFL revealed the list that featured 321 players that have been
00:31 invited to this year's NFL Combine up in Indianapolis.
00:38 And only one player on that list of 321 will be representing West Virginia and
00:43 of course that being center Zach Frazier.
00:47 Congrats to Zach by the way, he has done a phenomenal job of not just
00:52 appearing on NFL scouts radars, but really asserting himself as
00:57 one of the top offensive linemen in this draft class.
01:01 Despite the leg injury that he had against Baylor, but
01:05 he has been phenomenal in his collegiate career.
01:09 He 1000% deserves this opportunity, whether or
01:13 not he's gonna be able to do much is a little, is remained to be seen,
01:18 but we'll see what happens there.
01:21 I'm gonna tell you a story that lies with one of the two guys that did not get
01:26 invited to the NFL Combine and judging by the title, you probably know who I'm
01:32 talking about that is Beanie Bishop, how a consensus All-American and
01:37 let me underscore that one for you.
01:40 Consensus, All-American does not get invited to the NFL Combine is beyond me.
01:50 And I don't have the data, the research to back it up, but
01:53 I'm just assuming here that he's probably not the first and
01:57 probably won't be the last to have such an honor attached to his name and
02:02 not get invited to this draft event.
02:05 I don't understand how a player that has been nationally recognized by
02:13 several publications as one of the best players at his position
02:18 doesn't get the invitation to go to Indianapolis.
02:23 321 players get to go to this thing, okay?
02:28 That is more players than there is draft picks.
02:32 So, and again, that doesn't necessarily mean that if you don't get the invite to
02:38 Indianapolis that you're not gonna get drafted.
02:41 And it doesn't mean that if you get to go to the combine,
02:44 it doesn't mean you're 100% guaranteed to get drafted.
02:47 Things happen both ways, I get that.
02:50 But this is huge for Beanie, because this is a guy that he's already
02:57 working against a lot here, he's only had really one full year of high level
03:02 production, and that being this past year.
03:07 He's also got the size thing which is at his disadvantage.
03:11 He's not the biggest, he's not the longest corner,
03:13 he played a lot of zone coverage this past year at WVU.
03:16 There's a lot of question marks about what can he do in man coverage?
03:21 What can he do in press coverage?
03:23 There's a lot of those questions that are going to be one that are going to need to
03:26 be answered before the draft.
03:29 You're not gonna get all those answers at the combine, but
03:34 just getting in the eyes in the presence of the scouts,
03:39 coaches, GMs in Indianapolis is huge.
03:43 If he goes to Indian, he tests well, he interviews well,
03:47 all of a sudden, he's starting to build himself a case.
03:51 And he'll get to do that in Morgantown for their pro day.
03:57 But we're talking about a week.
04:00 He's gonna be, he would have been in Indianapolis for a handful of days,
04:05 close to a week, getting the opportunity to speak with these people.
04:12 And not only the NFL combine, but the Reese's Senior Bowl missed out on
04:17 Beanie Bishop, they declined to invite him to play in that game as well.
04:23 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:25 So I just don't get what the rationale is behind all this.
04:34 And I think it really hurts guys like Beanie,
04:39 you look at some of these top corners in this year's draft, right?
04:46 And there's no question that those guys should be there.
04:50 Because they're gonna be guys that go in the first round,
04:54 maybe the early part of the second.
04:56 And you kinda wanna know, hey, if we're taking a guy this high,
05:00 we need to be sure, we need to have conviction on this guy.
05:03 But you also have to have answers on guys like Beanie Bishop,
05:07 who had a tremendous year, but you've gotta figure out,
05:10 is this kid just a one hit wonder at West Virginia?
05:15 Or is this something that can translate to the next level?
05:17 And now you're minimizing that to what can he do with his pro day?
05:23 This is a consensus freaking all American, and
05:29 he's not gonna get to go to the combine?
05:30 I mean, I honestly had a hunch that this was gonna happen,
05:35 because he got shut out of the senior bowl.
05:38 There's already some pre-draft stuff out there, some pre-draft analysis,
05:42 some mock drafts out there that don't even talk about Beanie Bishop.
05:45 So I kinda felt like this was coming.
05:47 So since I felt like it was coming, I had this one note.
05:54 I wanted to find a really good statistic on Beanie.
05:57 And I jotted this down, and I've been waiting to unload it.
06:03 Here's this, going back to 2005,
06:08 that's 18 years.
06:11 Going back to 2005, Beanie Bishop has more passes defended
06:19 than anybody that has ever played the defensive side of the ball and
06:24 played the ball in the air consistently.
06:26 He has more passes defended than William Jackson III, Rashard Fant,
06:32 D. Milner, Bryce Hall, Nick Nelson.
06:34 You want me to keep going?
06:35 I mean, there's five guys on the list right there.
06:39 Four of those five were drafted, two of which went in the first round,
06:43 William Jackson and D. Milner.
06:47 Bryce Hall was a second round pick, early second round pick, 36th overall, and
06:51 Nick Nelson was a fourth round pick.
06:52 So those guys had fewer passes defended and
06:58 were drafted fairly early in the draft.
07:00 Beanie Bishop doesn't even get an invite to the NFL combine.
07:05 And I'm not just trying to hone it in on just one stat.
07:09 But if you go watch Beanie in his tape from this year,
07:13 he excelled in everything that he was asked to do.
07:16 Again, a lot of that was in zone coverage, but he played extremely well.
07:22 He shut down half of the field.
07:27 And I'd be willing to bet, based on his work ethic, his IQ,
07:31 he's gonna be able to play at the next level in some sort of role.
07:36 Is it a starting role?
07:37 I don't know.
07:38 Is it somebody that's gonna come in and primarily playing zone coverage?
07:42 Potentially, but if that's what he's asked to do,
07:46 he's gonna do it at a damn high level.
07:47 I just think he in particular is one of the biggest snubs
07:55 that I've seen in a long, long time.
07:57 A consensus All-American doesn't get that invite to Indianapolis.
08:03 And that's gonna impact his draft stock.
08:06 I don't care what anybody says.
08:08 Yes, he could put on an absolute freaking show at Pro Day.
08:11 And there's a good chance that he'll do that.
08:14 But not getting that invite to the combine, that's gonna kill him.
08:24 It could kill him.
08:25 That's a hard thing for me to grasp and put my thoughts around.
08:34 I just don't even know.
08:36 I'm honestly speechless.
08:37 There's guys that are invited to this thing that are nowhere near the production.
08:44 And good for those guys.
08:47 They'll get their opportunity, but how Beanie Bishop is not there is beyond me.
08:54 So hopefully he proves everyone wrong.
08:57 He puts this in the back of his mind and said, hey, look,
09:03 Reesey Senior Bowl didn't think that I was good enough to be here.
09:06 The NFL Combine said that I wasn't one of the top 321 prospects that were
09:11 interested in me.
09:12 And how that's picked, by the way, is this governing body.
09:16 It's basically a selection committee that's made up of different scouts and
09:22 scouting services.
09:23 All 32 NFL teams kind of put their input into the list.
09:29 But how they miss Beanie Bishop, again, way over my head.
09:36 So hopefully proves him wrong, shows out a pro day, gets himself drafted,
09:42 makes a name for himself in the NFL.
09:44 We can look back at this and say, told you so.
09:46 That'll do it for me here today on Between the Ears.
