Women wear jewelries on special occasions and even on ordinary days
Transcript
00:00 Most women wear all kinds of jewelry, diamonds, pearls, and gemstones during special occasions.
00:06 Some wear it on ordinary days to accessorize their watches or as earrings, necklaces, brooches,
00:12 rings, bracelets, and even cufflinks to convey style or communicate personal messages.
00:18 For some, wearing jewelry is not just a form of art for self and creative expression, but
00:23 it's also to enhance or elevate one's beauty.
00:26 It has the remarkable ability to boost one's self-confidence and invoke genuine happiness,
00:32 which can help distract from negative emotions and thoughts.
00:36 Small wonder, most women still prefer to receive this pricey and precious treasure as a Valentine's
00:42 Day gift from their significant other.
00:49 And to know more about jewelry and gemstones, we have here tonight a member of the National
00:54 Association of Jewelry Appraisers and the only Philippine at that, and a certified gemologist,
00:59 Willen Villarica.
01:00 Good evening, Willen.
01:01 Thank you so much for dropping by PTV News tonight.
01:04 I'm so psyched about this topic.
01:06 I feel like the time we have allotted is not enough, but it's okay.
01:08 We'll wing it.
01:10 So first of all, the term gemologist, I feel like it's a new term.
01:14 Not everybody really knows what exactly a gemologist does.
01:16 Can you walk us through it?
01:17 So gemologists, we identify colored stones.
01:21 We are the ones who also grade diamonds according to the four C's set by the Gemological Institute
01:28 of America, which is the widely used standard by the jewelry industry in grading the four
01:35 C's of diamond.
01:36 That's color, cut, clarity, and carat.
01:39 Color, cut, clarity, and carat.
01:41 Okay.
01:42 Okay.
01:43 So being a gemologist, like I said, it's not really a common profession and a passion,
01:49 I believe so.
01:50 So what are the inspirations or perhaps events in your life that inspired you to pursue this
01:56 career?
01:57 So I was born in the industry.
02:00 I'm actually a third generation jeweler and I feel very protective about the industry
02:05 because my paternal grandparents were one of the pioneers of jewelry manufacturing
02:10 in Nicawayan, Bulacan, where my family hails from.
02:14 So I guess you could say I was indoctrinated to jewelry early on.
02:19 My mom knew how to manipulate me into going into the family business, so to speak.
02:24 It's all about interesting suggesting, right?
02:27 Since you were a kid.
02:28 Patient parenting.
02:29 Yes, exactly.
02:30 Tiger moms.
02:31 Anyway, so of course, this is a great display I have here.
02:35 We'll be talking about it in a little bit, but as a certified gemologist, I know that
02:41 what you do now has a great meaning, but what is the personal meaning of gemstones to you?
02:47 Does it hold a special significance or importance?
02:49 Well, I've always been fascinated with jewelry and gemstones in particular.
02:54 My favorite is amethyst because purple is my favorite color.
02:59 But I'm also very interested, growing up, we've been surrounded by these things.
03:05 I've always been fascinated with how they just really sparkle and seem to put light
03:11 on whatever outfit I have on.
03:14 And they hold value.
03:16 So it's an investment, really.
03:18 So I really got into it a lot as I got older.
03:21 Yeah, well, I think mine is a sapphire, I believe.
03:26 But so this career is something that's not just uncommon, it's unique.
03:34 There are also tons of challenges that you have faced.
03:36 What do you say is like the biggest challenge that you have gone through in the field of
03:40 gemology?
03:41 Well, with gemology, it's always interesting when I encounter clients who feel that they've
03:47 discovered something valuable, and I would have to be the one to break the news that
03:51 it's glass or plastic.
03:54 From the appraising side, I've also encountered a lot of heartbreaks in my office, especially
04:03 when my client is told that the diamond sold to them turned out to be a lab-grown diamond.
04:10 Hence, are cheaper compared to its natural counterparts.
04:15 So being the bearer of bad news sometimes could be weighing, but at the same time, I'm
04:23 performing a service.
04:24 So the more I put myself out there, the more I talk about lab-grown diamonds and synthetic
04:30 stones and educating the public, it's really a fulfillment on my end.
04:34 Yeah, and I believe that in order to be really great and well-known in your field, legitimacy
04:41 and credibility is top-notch.
04:43 Very important.
04:44 So, of course, if you're the bearer of bad news, you not only have to tell them you just
04:48 spent money on a piece of glass.
04:50 Pretty much what happens.
04:52 Yes.
04:53 But speaking of lab-grown and natural-mine diamonds, we have here with us a really interesting
04:59 machine.
05:00 And for those of you who are asking yourselves, how can you differentiate between a mined
05:05 or natural-grown diamond or something that's just picked up from the lab?
05:11 Well, let's find out right now.
05:13 Yes, I can do a live demo.
05:16 So this machine is what we call the GIA ID 100, and this specifically distinguishes lab-grown
05:23 diamonds from earth-mined diamonds.
05:25 So I'll do a demonstration.
05:27 I have here a ring, a five-stone ring that I've had for a long time.
05:31 Of course.
05:32 So let's see if all the diamonds are earth-mined and if some are lab-grown.
05:39 So if the machine says pass, it's earth-mined.
05:43 If it says refer, it means two things.
05:46 It's either a lab-grown diamond or it's a type 2a diamond.
05:50 Type 2a diamonds are chemically pure diamonds, meaning they're colorless.
05:55 So in layman's terms, it's the decolored diamonds, like as colorless as colorless as it can be.
06:02 So there are no other chemicals in the diamond.
06:06 That's why it's just colorless.
06:07 So how do you know which is it from that point?
06:10 They go to someone like you?
06:11 You need to go to a certified laboratory like GIA for that because that does require a certain
06:18 kind of testing or a certain level of equipment.
06:22 It's only available to GEM laboratories.
06:25 GIA in New York?
06:26 In New York or in Hong Kong.
06:27 They also have in Bangkok.
06:29 Okay.
06:30 All right.
06:31 So let's do it.
06:32 Drum roll, please.
06:33 Yes.
06:34 Okay.
06:35 So I have to make sure it's pointed.
06:42 So what you're doing is you're literally putting the diamond against the probe of the GIA machine,
06:49 right?
06:50 It shouldn't hit the metal.
06:51 Oh, it shouldn't hit the metal.
06:52 If it does, then it's going to give a small...
06:55 There, it's been saying pass.
06:57 Pass.
06:58 Okay.
06:59 Refer.
07:00 This one says refer.
07:01 Oh, wow.
07:02 Refer.
07:03 There.
07:04 There's another one.
07:05 Refer.
07:06 So that's number two.
07:07 Refer.
07:08 And this is the last one.
07:09 Pass.
07:10 So that's three out of five.
07:11 Passing above.
07:12 So the machine speaks.
07:13 Okay.
07:14 So that's number one.
07:15 Okay.
07:16 So that's number two.
07:17 Okay.
07:18 So that's number three.
07:19 Passing above.
07:20 Okay.
07:21 So that's number three.
07:22 Passing above.
07:23 Okay.
07:24 So that's number three.
07:25 Okay.
07:26 So that's number three.
07:27 Okay.
07:28 So that's number three.
07:29 Okay.
