00:00 I'm gonna need your help with him in the morning.
00:02 I'm taking her today!
00:04 You can go!
00:05 Doris is a 17-year-old girl.
00:12 Even though her brother is terminally ill,
00:14 she wants to be a normal teenager
00:16 and have a normal high school experience.
00:18 You can come to my house if you need a place to party.
00:21 My mom won't be there, and you can do whatever you want.
00:23 I have to tell everybody.
00:25 Um, who are you?
00:28 Doris.
00:29 I do feel like there are those extraordinary movies that
00:33 really have a great impact on people,
00:36 and this really could be one of them.
00:38 Your house is super homey.
00:44 Thank you.
00:45 Doris has been assisting her mother
00:47 in caring for her brother.
00:49 Christine is so in need of someone who can console her
00:52 and help her through this that she turns
00:54 her daughter into that role.
00:56 Where they live, how they live, I
00:57 don't think it's a typical mother-daughter relationship,
01:00 but I don't think anything's typical about this family.
01:03 He's my child.
01:04 When he's in pain, I'm in pain.
01:06 I'm your child, too.
01:08 What about--
01:08 God's sake, give me a break.
01:12 Doris has her own issues and her own plight in life.
01:16 She's been consistently told that her problems just
01:19 aren't important on the grand scale.
01:21 But her friends try and be there for her,
01:23 which I think is really lovely to see,
01:24 because it's really different to anything else.
01:26 It's been really fun to play around, especially
01:28 with the younger cast, because we all can just kind of feed
01:31 off of each other and play around and joke around.
01:34 We were able to spend time together
01:36 before we began shooting.
01:38 And I think we immediately clicked, all of us.
01:40 Oh, Doris, come here.
01:43 I think her role is to take some of the wisdom
01:46 that she's gained from going through these really real
01:48 things and kind of bring it into their world.
01:50 But their role in her life is to let her kind of forget
01:53 and leave that at home for a while.
01:56 This is the best night of my life.
02:00 [laughter]
02:02 It's not really like anything you've seen.
02:05 I think everyone who goes through these big struggles
02:08 are learning compassion.
02:09 You're learning empathy.
02:11 You're learning what's really important in the world.
02:13 [screaming]
02:16 Just to be more understanding of one another
02:17 and to be considerate of what others have gone through,
02:20 just to remind people of that overarching theme.
