Arteta praises West Ham boss Moyes and Arsenal aware of there ability to exploit weaknesses
Transcript
00:00 Could you just talk about the impact he's made on and off the pitch compared to what
00:04 you were expecting when you bought him?
00:07 Yes, we were expecting the best obviously because we have to pay big money and we knew
00:11 the player really well but something else is the way he's fitting and how loved and
00:18 respected he is already at the club, in the team and then obviously the performance he
00:22 has put in every single week. He's been probably one of the most consistent players again in
00:28 this season and especially in big, big games. He's been incredibly strong for us to help
00:35 us to win those games so we are delighted to have him.
00:38 For the last two or three years, every other week David Moyes was asked how much does he
00:42 work. You obviously spent 105, could you put a price on where he's at now?
00:47 No, that's not for me to do.
00:49 A lot more?
00:50 Sorry?
00:51 A lot more?
00:52 I don't know, when we talk about that figures I get lost.
00:55 This season you've beaten the likes of Liverpool, City and the League but West Ham have beaten
01:03 your side twice, obviously the first time in the Cup and the second time in the League.
01:07 What is it about David Moyes' West Ham side that is so difficult to break down on the pitch?
01:13 That's exactly that, it's very difficult to break down when they go ahead as well in the
01:17 scoreline. It gets even more difficult. We generate it so much as well, especially at
01:24 home but we cannot capitalise on that. He's got this talent as well, his teams always
01:29 have that talent that when you leave the window open a little bit they are ready to take any
01:34 advantage from it and that's a game we're going to have to play on Sunday again.
01:38 In the past it's been reported of your admiration for Calvin Phillips. He's obviously a very
01:43 good midfield player. He's obviously going to be up against your side this weekend.
01:47 What kind of threat does he pose in the course of one star?
01:50 Yes, obviously he made his name playing at Leeds and the way he did and the performance,
01:57 the consistency that he showed in that team. He had a big move and everybody suspects because
02:04 at the national team level as well he's done some important things as well so he's a big talent.
02:09 Jorginho of course last game received many applauded. If you recall earlier in the season
02:14 after the Spurs game he was getting a lot of criticism for one of the mistakes he made
02:17 in that game. Was it a show of his mental fortitude that he's gone from being questioned
02:22 from that point to now obviously coming out to be one of the best players in that game?
02:26 That's Jorginho. His biggest strength is his personality and his mentality. Even if he
02:32 makes a mistake the next time he's not going to hide. You want to be a top team and be
02:36 a midfielder that wants to command the team, you need to be able to do that and he does it.
02:42 In light of all this talk of the Sim Beans and blue cards, in terms of innovation in football,
02:47 what's your general mindset on innovation?
02:50 I don't want to give any more ideas. I think we have enough ideas and enough people so
02:55 I prefer not to say anything else.
02:57 When you had a result like last week against Liverpool, how do you get people back down
03:05 to work and reset to go again the week after when you've had such a high like that?
03:09 Talking about West Ham the next day and the things we can still improve. We didn't do
03:15 that well against Liverpool and the room for improvement that the team has in many areas.
03:20 That's it, like we always do.
03:23 There's been so many players who have been burdened by big boss attacks in football in
03:29 the past. What is it about his personality that he seems absolutely unfazed by? When
03:33 you met him and you were going through this, did you look at him and think, 'This guy
03:37 is going to handle the pressure, he's going to come home'?
03:39 Yes, he's a very mature and confident person, especially for his age. He's done a lot in
03:45 the game as well. He's done it in an academy and through an education that, in my opinion,
03:52 is one of the best in the country. He's got an environment, a family that is very supportive
03:58 but also very demanding of him. He has dealt with that in a great way.
04:03 Then he loves what he does. He loves it every single day. He's very demanding of himself
04:08 and he wants to get better. He's got the qualities that God gave him and he keeps developing
04:14 every day and we have to support him on that.
04:17 From the outside, he seems like someone who is in that leadership group. Does he feel
04:23 like someone you could captain the team if you need to?
04:27 Yes, he's got every skill. Obviously, he's been captain at youth level, he's been captain
04:32 for West Ham and he's someone you don't need to have the armband. When you talk, people
04:38 listen and pay attention to that or not. He's got his natural ability to do that.
04:43 As a person, from our perspective, he seems quite quiet. What is he like?
05:00 You just want to hug him. You just want to hug him all day and be next to him. He's always
05:05 smiling. He's always positive. The way he looks after people and how humble he is, it's
05:12 just adorable.
05:13 Do you remember what your first impression of him was like when he first came to the club?
05:18 Yes, his presence. Physically, he looked much bigger than on TV because when we signed him,
05:23 I didn't have the chance to meet with him in person. That was a good first impression.
05:28 He's got this positive energy about him. He's always smiling and his eyes tell you that
05:35 he's transparent, he's clear and he's honest. That's it.
05:41 When we've spoken about stuff you liked about him, you mentioned his football and education.
05:47 He did spend some time at Barcelona Academy when he was in Japan. I was wondering, did
05:52 you know that and did you see the principles that you were taught in him when he came?
05:59 Yes, I knew that. But as well, I meant education at every level and the culture that they grow
06:06 in. When you talk about habits and about trying to predict someone's future, it's about how
06:15 this person behaves daily. That is going to make his future. When you see Tomé Yasuo
06:20 every single day, how he wakes up, looks after his job, looks after his people. I think something
06:25 good is going to happen for this guy.
06:27 On Gabriel, I think it's going to be his 150th year at Barcelona. In terms of his influence
06:36 growing, he's been really consistent over the past year. How has his influence grown
06:42 both on and off the pitch?
06:45 Obviously, a lot of things have happened to him. Obviously, his role in the team has
06:50 grown. His personal life as well, he's got a very different personal life than he had
06:55 before with his family and his language. I think now as well, he's changed a lot of things
07:02 in his life. He's improved his mentality and he can decide what he wants to be. I think
07:09 he made the right call to take the direction that he took.
07:12 Was that stuff he did on his own or did you ask him?
07:15 A little bit of both.
07:18 Thanks very much.
07:19 Thank you.
07:20 Yes.
