2024 is the year of the dragon, and celebrations of the Lunar New Year are gearing up across the country.

00:00 Well, preparations are well underway here at World Square for Lunar New Year celebrations.
00:07 There'll be two weeks of an action-packed schedule in store here and I'm joined by one
00:11 of the special dancers that you'll be seeing here at World Square.
00:14 This is Christian from the Jin Wu Kun Dance Troupe.
00:17 Christian, thank you for joining us.
00:19 Thank you for having me.
00:20 So Christian, tell us how much preparation goes into a performance like this.
00:23 Yeah, so our team does a lot of preparation for Chinese New Year especially.
00:28 We've been training almost every single day, countless hours during the night and during
00:31 the day to prepare for such a season.
00:34 And what kind of dances can we expect?
00:36 Yeah, so our team specialises in jumping on poles.
00:40 We also do a lot of store celebrations.
00:42 But during Chinese New Year it's just about doing performances for everyone, for the community.
00:47 And of course it's all about the costumes too with these dragon dancers and lion dancers.
00:52 How long does it take you to get dressed and what goes into making these costumes?
00:55 Yeah, so these costumes, the ones behind us, they're handmade.
00:59 A lot of paper mache and things like that and bamboo.
01:03 Getting ready takes about, it's not that long, about 10 minutes or so.
01:06 It's just about getting everyone out and setting up for the music and what we're doing that
01:10 day.
01:11 Now it is a bit cooler here today but normally at this time of year it's sort of summer,
01:15 things are heating up a little bit.
01:18 Is it hot and sweaty inside this costume or what's it like dancing inside one of these
01:22 costumes?
01:23 You wouldn't be surprised if after a performance you come out hot and sweaty and needing a
01:27 lot of water.
01:28 Perfect.
01:29 And so what are you most looking forward to about celebrating Lunar New Year?
01:32 Yeah, look it's an important time of the year for all of us.
01:34 A big part of it is coming with family, celebrating such a strong tradition and embracing our
01:43 culture really.
