00:00 Could we see Cody Rhodes return to AEW?
00:04 Scott D'Amore fired from TNA!
00:06 My review of AEW Dynamite.
00:09 I am Luke Owen and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:14 It's been a mad week for WWE.
00:21 Cody Rhodes announced on Smackdown that he wouldn't be facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania
00:25 despite that being the long-term plan.
00:27 The Rock looked like he was going to face Roman instead, and the fan backlash to it
00:31 was so strong that WWE had to censor "Rocky sucks" chants from Raw as the hashtag #WeWantCody
00:39 grew stronger and stronger.
00:41 Some of this is being reported as a big Worky McWorkface.
00:45 Other reports say that WWE are considering all of their options ahead of today's press
00:50 conference where we will get all the answers.
00:54 But that is not what Sean Ross Sapp is going to be talking about.
00:58 With reports noting that Cody could have potentially been lied to about the plans for WrestleMania,
01:03 it seems his future in WWE isn't quite as clear as it once was.
01:09 On Fightful to The Hump, Sean Ross Sapp was asked about the chances of Cody leaving WWE
01:14 and returning to AEW.
01:17 Now usually we would pull a quote here and you would have to listen to me say it, but
01:22 I think it's important that you see the clip to get the full context of how this question
01:28 was answered.
01:29 You should also go and watch the show in full because it's great.
01:52 It should be made clear, this is not a report.
01:55 This is not a Fightful Select $5 news story.
01:58 It's mostly just speculation.
01:59 However it should also be noted that Dave Meltzer had previously reported that Cody
02:03 Rhodes signed a new contract in October of last year, however SRS reported that while
02:09 the contract had been offered, Cody Rhodes had yet to sign it.
02:14 When asked about this answer on Twitter, Sean Ross Sapp replied, "It's wrestling and I've
02:19 seen the most insane s*** happen over the last 5 years and will never call anything
02:24 impossible."
02:26 Do you think Cody Rhodes could go back to AEW?
02:30 Let me know in the comments down below.
02:31 Personally I don't think it's going to happen.
02:35 But then I also said the same thing about him leaving AEW and I am historically wrong
02:39 about a lot of things.
02:40 But on this one I'm pretty sure he's going to stay in WWE.
02:44 Right?
02:46 Speaking of insane things that are happening in wrestling right now, Impact Wrestling successfully
02:50 rebranded to TNA with their Hard To Kill PPV in January.
02:54 Wrestling hype surrounding the promotion keeps on growing, TNA even had their Knockouts Champion
02:58 Jordan Grace in the Royal Rumble.
03:03 And the man at the heart of all of that was Scott D'Amour, the President of TNA Wrestling
03:08 who by all accounts was very well liked backstage by talent and crew.
03:13 One talent even noted to Fightful Select that he "saves" TNA - which is why the news
03:18 that he's been fired has come as such a shock.
03:21 D'Amour has been replaced by Anthony Sisoni from Anthem.
03:25 The reason for his firing has been given to both PWInsider and Fightful from Anthem themselves
03:31 who say they want to ensure TNA has a greater tie to Anthem day to day moving forward.
03:37 Our own Tempest was contacted by someone from TNA who said, "No one knew it was coming
03:42 except higher-ups.
03:43 No talent or crew.
03:44 Scott D'Amour knows wrestling literally on the deepest possible levels.
03:49 He knows every indie talent in every town.
03:53 No idea what's next."
03:55 This firing was reportedly not well received by those backstage in TNA according to PWInsider.
04:01 A video call was held to let everyone know what was occurring, but Anthem officials reportedly
04:05 contradicted their own press release by saying D'Amour "stepped down" rather than being
04:10 fired - which is what happened.
04:12 Sisoni only reportedly read a pre-prepared statement but did not take questions.
04:16 Fightful Select confirmed that talent were not happy about this news and said they weren't
04:20 given a reason for what happened beyond what was in the press release.
04:24 They also report there was a second call headed up by Tommy Dreamer and Gail Kim which did
04:28 not go down well either - with House of Wrestling reporting that Kim had to ask those on the
04:32 call to mute their microphones as it was becoming chaotic.
04:36 Initially House of Wrestling had been told that Dreamer offered those on the call a chance
04:40 to get out of their contracts if they were really unhappy about the news, but they have
04:45 since learned that wasn't the case.
04:47 One person told them that any releases from this news would be based upon how important
04:51 the wrestlers are to the company.
04:53 Jordan Grace, for example, is someone that TNA will do everything they can to keep hold
04:58 of.
04:59 It's been a crazy week of news and there's even more news on WrestleTalk.com today - including
05:04 John Laurinaitis' lawyer issuing a statement of vice claiming that WWE executives knew
05:10 about the allegations surrounding the late Ashley Mazzaro.
05:13 With WWE issuing a statement in 2019 after Mazzaro's death claiming that they didn't.
05:19 The full details of that plus loads more is all on WrestleTalk.com.
05:24 Before we get into the AEW review however, here's a clip from this Friday's edition
05:28 of Survival Series to whet your appetite for a new round.
05:50 But now it's time for my review of AEW Dynamite - aka the Match of the Year contender/big
05:56 announcement/sting title winner edition of AEW Dynamite - in about 5 minutes.
06:01 This very stacked show opened with what is arguably the hottest thing - the third encounter
06:07 between Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland - the winner of which would become the number
06:11 one contender to Samoa Joe's World Title.
06:14 These two already have had two Match of the Year contenders in 2023 - the second one of
06:18 which ended up coming second in our WrestleTalk Podcast Match of the Year awards.
06:22 So expectations were high going into this next chapter, and boy howdy did it not disappoint.
06:29 The action started off incredibly hot, as did the crowd, and they maintained that pace
06:33 for the rest of the bout.
06:35 These two are so crisp together, highlighted in a moment when Hanger did a moonsault to
06:40 the floor and rolled through because Swerve moved, who then in turn rolled through into
06:43 a flatliner of his own.
06:45 It was so seamless.
06:46 Swerve ducked a buckshot and hit one of his own for an awesome nearfall.
06:50 He got his feet on the ropes following a buckshot lariat from Page, and survived a countout
06:54 attempt by Hanger just getting back in at the 9.
06:58 Swerve awkwardly landed on his ankle, but fought through the pain to hit a dead eye
07:02 through a table on the outside and hit the JML Driver for the 1-2 time limit draw.
07:10 It was timed to perfection, executed to perfection, and was just absolutely perfect.
07:17 An exceptional pro wrestling match.
07:21 But there's just one more thing, and it's not that one table that fell down.
07:25 You might have noticed in my recap there that Swerve sounded like the Valiant Babyface while
07:30 Hangman Page was the heel.
07:32 And this is something that the crowd also felt, cheering Swerve whilst being mixed,
07:36 often booing Hangman Adam Page.
07:39 Page sold this throughout the match like it was weighing heavy on his mind, and it was
07:42 all clearly by design, as Swerve got on the mic after the match to ask for five more minutes,
07:48 and Page said no.
07:51 All you had to do was beat me, and you couldn't.
07:54 I was right all along, you cannot beat me without the Mogul Embassy.
07:59 Tony Schiavone announced on the house mic that Tony Khan made it official it will be
08:03 a triple threat for Revolution - something that Samoa Joe was less than thrilled about
08:07 in a backstage interview.
08:08 Hangman Page left the arena shouting, "He can't beat me."
08:12 I did not see a double turn coming.
08:14 Not only because it's hard to imagine the blue eyed babyface that fought against The
08:18 Elite to capture the World Heavyweight Title being booed by AEW fans, but also because
08:23 Swerve invaded this man's home and cut a promo on his sleeping child.
08:27 And yet somehow, somehow, they've done it.
08:30 And they did it so, so well.
08:33 Tony Storm beat Red Velvet while Deanna Purrazzo did commentary, and they announced Orange
08:36 Cassidy will be defending his International Championship against Tomohiro Ishii on collision
08:41 this Saturday.
08:42 What?!
08:43 And continued the tease of tension between best friends and Trent.
08:46 And if that wasn't awesome enough, here comes some good lucha thing.
08:51 The Blackpool Combat Club are so damn cool, and they had a corking trios match against
08:56 The Lads from CMLL - which put some great shine on the invading luchadors.
09:01 And in an interesting finish, The Rep nearly got bumped and Claudio Castagnoli used this
09:05 chance to hit a low blow during a spinebuster for the win.
09:09 An excellent match, but if you want to make this invading force look credible, I think
09:15 they should have won here.
09:17 Even if the low blow is done to protect them.
09:19 More of CMLL got in the ring after the match, but they were chased off by 2.0 and Christopher
09:24 Daniels.
09:25 And again, if you want to present this invading force as a serious invading force, I wish
09:30 the backup for the Blackpool Combat Club was more impressive.
09:35 The Undisputed Kingdom beat up Chucky backstage, and Tony Khan appeared on screen to make his
09:39 next big announcement - which had already been announced earlier in the day by Ticketmaster.
09:45 AEW will be doing a show from the TD Gardens in Boston in March, and the show will be called
09:51 Big Business.
09:53 You will love Big Business.
09:56 It is the American way.
09:57 TK hyped this as much as you would expect, but in traditional AEW style, the graphic
10:03 is spelled Boston wrong.
10:04 There's only one S in Boston you silly fools.
10:07 I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder.
10:10 That isn't even an S, it's a dollar sign.
10:13 Wait a minute.
10:14 Yes this will likely be the home of the AEW debut for Mercedes Monet, the former Sasha
10:19 Banks in WWE.
10:21 Fightful Select report that Monet has actually been on the AEW payroll since the start of
10:25 the year, and there was consideration to announcing or debuting Mercedes, but instead the decision
10:30 to pass that on to the TD Garden.
10:33 Because of the Ticketmaster leak earlier in the day, I had expected TK to announce Mercedes'
10:38 debut as part of this big announcement, because what he announced was news that we already
10:42 sorta knew.
10:43 But it also lends to the idea that Mercedes Monet won't be the only debut at that show
10:49 with Big Business and all of its heavy money theming could be an all out 2021 situation
10:56 where we get not one, not three, but two new AEW signings.
11:02 Cody Rhodes AEW was unconfirmed.
11:04 Takeshita beat Chris Jericho with his own Walls of Jericho after some screwy interference
11:10 from Don Callis.
11:16 It's funny because Callis used a screwdriver.
11:26 Look I wish I could be more excited about this, but I've seen Jericho put over power
11:29 house hobs and Action Andre Strong, and those didn't lead to much.
11:33 And the main event saw Sting and Darby Allin beat Ricky Starks and Big Bill for the AEW
11:38 Tag Team Championships in a very fun Tornado Tag match.
11:42 Sting continued to celebrate the return of TNA by wrestling in a t-shirt and brawling
11:46 through the crowd, hitting an awesome big dive from an entranceway.
11:49 The best spot of the match for me was Big Bill catching and diving Darby Allin and seamlessly
11:54 hitting a Boss Man Slam.
11:55 It was so, so good.
11:58 Sting hit the Scorpion Death Drop on Starks for the win.
12:01 Sting's got other kids that aren't just Darby and they got in the ring after the match,
12:05 but all four of them were attacked by the Young Bucks in white suits.
12:09 The white suits were such an effective choice, as the blood from Darby Allin stained them
12:14 and they hit their renamed finish, the EVP Trigger.
12:18 A very good old school heat angle, nothing flashy, just weapons, blood and their finish.
12:25 Excellent.
12:26 That wrapped up an excellent episode of AEW Dynamite.
12:29 The opener is a genuine match of the year contender, the finale was a real feel good
12:34 moment and the trios match was awesome fun.
12:37 This week's Dynamite is 4 out of 5.
12:40 Hopefully the Mercedes debut won't end up on a list like this, but do check out our
12:44 latest partsFUNknown list covering wrestlers who peaked with their debuts.
12:48 I gave a lot of input into the Taz entry.
