00:02 - Our latest update in Missouri.
00:05 I love these, Pat, these scientific polls, right?
00:07 These are very scientific.
00:09 62% of people who live in Missouri
00:12 say they want sports betting.
00:13 It's really not, again, I don't wanna speak out of line here
00:17 but it really feels like it's not the people
00:19 that don't want sports betting.
00:21 It's just these few people who are litigating against it
00:24 in their legislature.
00:26 - No, and this was put out by the committee
00:29 that's got a ballot initiative to put on the November polls
00:34 a question to legalize sports betting.
00:36 And the only reason they're doing this
00:38 is by the same team coalition
00:40 that's behind the legislation that's in the works.
00:44 And I'll give you an update on that in a minute.
00:46 This is kind of news though, because in the past
00:48 there's been a couple of polls the past few years
00:51 that it was not a majority of Missourians.
00:53 So this at least gives some sort of a glimmer of hope
00:57 on the ballot side of things, should it resort to that.
01:01 Now on the flip side, each of the past two years
01:03 we've had a proposal backed by those teams
01:07 get through the House.
01:09 And by all accounts, Rep. Dan Howe said,
01:14 "The bill will be on the House floor next week
01:16 "and will likely again pass."
01:18 And he said, "I have no idea
01:19 "what's gonna happen in the Senate."
01:21 I talked to an industry source to ask
01:24 if things have changed from the past two years
01:27 where the bill has died in the Senate
01:29 because of one Senator, Denny Hoskins.
01:32 And he said, "I have a better chance
01:33 "of winning the Powerball tonight."
01:35 So there's very, very slim chances
01:38 anything gets done in the Senate
01:41 because one Senator alone can derail
01:43 an entire piece of legislation.
01:45 And Denny Hoskins has done that the past two years
01:47 and has said he won't change his stance this year.
01:51 Now, what's kind of interesting on that side
01:54 and actually maybe even makes things less optimistic
01:58 is the Senate president who is also a Republican,
02:01 like Hoskins, has punished this group of few Republicans
02:05 who are kind of derailing a ton of legislation
02:08 because they're following their own caucus.
02:11 That's just, it's just mucking up everything in Missouri.
02:15 So that alone, along with Hoskins'
02:18 already opposition against sports betting
02:21 just makes the legislative side in Missouri unlikely.
02:24 This new poll on the other side,
02:26 should it get to the ballot in November,
02:30 a little bit more exciting prospects than last year
02:33 where I think a poll said only 44% of Missourians
02:37 want sports betting.
02:38 So again, Missouri is a fun state to watch
02:41 because you've got all these strange things going on,
02:44 including eight-hour-long filibusters
02:46 where they're reading Ronald Reagan's biography
02:48 and making sure things don't happen.
02:52 And the teams really want it.
02:53 Most people in Missouri want it.
02:55 So just a really interesting state to watch.
