00:00 A shocking incident took place in Mumbai involving a Kuwaiti fish trawler and three individuals
00:09 from Kanyakumari.
00:10 In an early morning operation on Tuesday, the crew of the patrol boat Chaitrali, belonging
00:15 to the Yellowgate Police Station, intercepted a 30-metre-long Kuwaiti fishing trawler just
00:20 four nautical miles from the iconic Gateway of India.
00:24 Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Port Zone Sanjay Latkar revealed that the three
00:28 individuals on board, identified as Nith Suddhito, J. Sayantha Anish and infant Vijay Vinay Anthony,
00:34 claimed to be from Kanyakumari and had been working for a company in Kuwait.
00:38 Allegedly, they had not been paid for two years and were not provided with regular meals.
00:42 Their passports were also confiscated by their employers.
00:46 The trio managed to escape their situation by navigating their way to Mumbai over a 10-day
00:50 journey guided by a GPS device.
00:53 They were stopped by coastal police at Prongs Lighthouse and subsequently handed over to
00:57 the Colaba Police.
00:58 A Colaba police officer said that they were questioning the escapees.
01:02 The police officer said that they seemed to have difficulty communicating in both English
01:05 and Hindi, making their investigation challenging.
01:08 However, the officer said that the police were considering their illegal re-entry sympathetically,
01:12 recognising that they may be victims in this situation.
01:15 This incident has raised concerns about the security lapse, with conflicting statements
01:19 from the Navy and the Coast Guard.
01:21 DCP Latkar asserted that it was the police who first stopped the vessel and then alerted
01:25 the Navy.
01:26 However, Naval forces claimed that they initially intercepted the trawler at Prongs Lighthouse.
01:31 A Naval spokesperson refused to accept any lapse on the Navy's part, stating that one
01:35 should let the police conduct an investigation.
01:37 Calls to high-ranking officials, including K Suresh, Additional Director General of the
01:42 Coast Guard West and Inspector General Bhisham Sharma remain unanswered.
01:46 Despite continuous aerial and sea patrols by the defence forces, questions arise about
01:50 how the Kuwaiti vessel managed to approach Mumbai undetected.
01:54 This incident is reminiscent of a similar event last year, when a yacht loaded with
01:58 arms was discovered off Raigad district after being damaged by inclement weather.
02:04 As investigations unfold, Mumbai remains on high alert and authorities are working to
02:08 address the gaps in the coastal security system.
