As we take a look at the King's cancer diagnosis, what will this mean for him and the royal family moving forward, and why was this something the monarch was keen to make public so soon? Here's everything we know about the story so far.

King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer. He was found to have the disease during treatment for an enlarged prostate, though the type of cancer has not been disclosed. He has begun regular treatment and will take a step back from his public duties. A statement from the palace said that the king wanted to make the diagnosis public due to his past connection with various cancer charities.

Though for now he does intend to uphold some of his engagements, such as completing paperwork and private meetings, as well as his weekly in-person appointments with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

In the event that the reigning monarch cannot perform their duties, people designated "counsellors of state" are able to stand in. In this instance those people are Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess Royal Anne, and Prince Edward.
