The accident that resulted in the death of a spectator and another seriously injured, occurred during the "Memoriál Miroslav Fajkus - Setkání mistrů 2008" held in the Místecká Street course, in the town of Ostrava, Moravian-Silesian Region in Czech Republic.
One of the competing cars, the red Škoda Felicia #34, was driven by the only sixteen-year-old youngster Jan Kašpárek from Olomouc. He had just finished his second lap, when his car suddenly swerved on the right side while running at speed along a straight, and crashed into a crowd.
The out of control car hit and seriously injured three spectators. One of them, a 35-year-old man succumbed to his massive head injuries at 17h20 that same day at the Ostrava University Hospital. The name of the victim was not released. Another man suffered spinal and head injuries. The third injured spectator was treated and released at the Vítkovice hospital.
It is believed that the accident, which happened at about 14h20 on Saturday, 11 October 2008, was caused by a steering failure. After the accident the race was not immediately stopped.
The event was organized in memory of the popular Czech racing driver Miroslav Fajkus, who lost his life during the Náměšť nad Oslavou hillclimb, on 04 May 2008. After the tragedy, Adolf Fešárek and Josef Klanica, organizers of the event, were charged and convicted of manslaughter for their part in this accident.
