Hsuan Chang Kitano is a producer, harpsichordist, fortepianist, and pianist working on Project Cadenzas since 2018. This project explores identity, expression, and creativity through musical performance in multicultural contexts. Kitano's unique artistic voice is evident in the contemporary performances that integrate diverse cultural perspectives and highlight improvisational practices from 17th-19th century Europe and Asia, with a particular emphasis on Taiwan. Kitano's interdisciplinary approach is a significant aspect of her work. She collaborates with various art forms, including contemporary dance, pop rap, and visual art, to create captivating experiences. Moreover, she has conducted several research-based lecture recitals, exploring intriguing connections between music and other disciplines such as mathematics, literature, and dance.
“CADENZA 21'” features one of Kitano's recent projects in Taiwan. It features a unique tone color that blends the harpsichord with instruments from diverse cultures, such as Chinese historical instruments, a traditional Middle Eastern instrument, Mongolian musical practices, and a Taiwanese aboriginal instrument, the nose flute. These performances showcase artistic expression and promote communication, exchange, and understanding across traditional and diverse music vocabularies. They also highlight improvisational practices from Kitano's research on 17th-19th century Europe and Asia, emphasizing intercultural collaboration in early music.
In this album, Kitano explores ten music improvisation styles based on her research, including "bass improvisation," "decorative improvisation," "phrase improvisation," "variational improvisation," "narrative improvisation," "adaptation improvisation," "motivic improvisation," "modern improvisation," and "free improvisation." Each improvisation style can stand alone or interweave and blend with others. Kitano's work is a testament to the power of collaboration and cultural exchange in creating innovative and expressive music.

音樂即興是跨界與多元文化融合交流最直接的方式。
即興演奏家同時為作曲者,透過當下的創作威受,音樂得以在現場呈現出演奏者的語藝、時代背景、以及文化經驗。《即興貳捨壹》專輯中,音樂家們結合豐富的樂器與音樂風格,包括鼻笛、葫蘆絲、笛、 簫、口簧琴、琵琶丶二胡丶箏、馬頭 琴、呼麥丶烏德琴、大鍵琴、崑曲,帶給聽眾全新的音樂體驗。
專輯特邀來自不同音樂領域的即興音樂家。國樂音樂家——林小楓,蘇筠涵、王瀅絜、王媛平以中華傳統音樂與各地民族音樂中不同風昧的旋律丶節奏元素,輔以樂器獨有的演奏與加花手法,這些音樂元素與臺灣原住名樂器——鼻笛以及巴洛克的大鍵琴在音色產生了奇妙的共鳴。加上京崑旦角兆欣帶來的崑曲元素、馬頭琴演奏家黃煜程呈現的蒙古音樂特色,以及烏德琴演奏家阿樂蹦 貴妃展現的中東風味,如此多樣元素的音樂融合,豐富了即興藝術品昧。
另外,《即興貳拾壹》現場演出時,聽眾專注且興奮的氣氛與音樂家的即興演奏交織產生的火花,由錄音老師陳雨農記錄下來,使得此專輯能匯集14首兼具臺灣二十一世紀傳統與當代特色的即興方式和多元的音樂融合風格,為聽覺帶來了豐富的饗宴。此專輯特別感謝這些在國際音樂舞台活躍的台灣音樂家們的參與與投入,以及鄭星慧老師獨具匠心的專輯裝幀和紙雕設計,更使作品呈現藝術的豐富性與多元性。邀請各界藝術喜好者一起欣賞。
