00:00 [MUSIC]
00:04 Performing Complicated with Olivia Rodrigo.
00:07 Yeah, Olivia started performing Complicated on her tour, and
00:12 everybody was talking about it.
00:14 And then we just happened to be in the same city at the same time, and
00:19 so she reached out to me to jump up on stage with her and perform the songs.
00:26 So yeah, it was spontaneous, and she was really sweet.
00:33 And yeah, that was really fun.
00:36 I smashed guitars in my first two videos, because I had to.
00:41 What is happening?
00:43 I look lit.
00:44 No, I think I was.
00:47 [LAUGH] I'm totally sure how I feel about that, but
00:51 I'm like, I can't do this right now.
00:53 [LAUGH] Hey, I'm Avril Lavigne, and
00:56 this is my ET retrospective.
00:58 Avril Lavigne.
00:59 [MUSIC]
01:01 Those are the 2002 VMAs.
01:04 This was my first award show, I think.
01:06 I still thought I was in Canada.
01:08 [LAUGH] I'm from Canada, and the big music program there is called Much Music.
01:16 And so when I won my award this night, I thanked Much Music.
01:21 [LAUGH] What's funny is that I didn't know at the time that that outfit I was
01:25 wearing was going to become a Halloween costume for people to wear.
01:29 They got style, and they've got soul.
01:31 >> Go, girl!
01:33 >> Yeah, whatever she said.
01:35 Lisa Marie Presley was so sweet, and we always ended up doing work stuff together
01:41 and hanging out backstage and stuff, and that night,
01:45 I think it was the first night I had met her.
01:49 And I was telling her that I loved her bracelet, her spiked bracelet, and
01:53 she gave it to me.
01:55 Yeah, and I still have it.
01:56 Yeah, of course I have it.
01:58 We were backstage, and there was just a million people around, and Eminem walking
02:02 up to me and shaking my hand, and meeting him, and him knowing who I was, and
02:07 walking over to me and saying, what up, and shaking my hand.
02:12 And he's like, yo, I respect you, and your music's cool.
02:16 And I just about [BLEEP] my pants.
02:18 [LAUGH] What is happening?
02:21 [MUSIC]
02:26 That's my complicated music video.
02:29 When it came time to do my hair and makeup, I was just like, to makeup artist,
02:32 I was like, I want black eyes.
02:34 And she put black, and I was like, more, more, darker, darker, darker.
02:37 And so I still have all of my outfits from every single music video.
02:41 So I have this tank top, tie, wristband, all in my archives, stored away.
02:48 I actually just recently went through them.
02:51 And yeah, it's crazy that I still have it all.
02:55 It's my first single, the first video I ever shot,
02:59 the first time hearing myself on the radio.
03:01 So it's a really meaningful song.
03:04 [MUSIC]
03:11 Skater Boy music video.
03:13 I couldn't wear just one bracelet.
03:15 It had to be 12.
03:17 I will say, though, this spike bracelets are really good self-defense.
03:22 My brother is in this music video.
03:25 He's driving the car.
03:27 I smashed guitars in my first two videos because I had to.
03:32 Just had as much fun with it as I possibly could, from what can I do?
03:37 Smash guitars and just trashing malls.
03:42 And it was kind of like, am I really allowed to do this?
03:47 Yeah, do whatever you want.
03:49 I just got a new cell phone yesterday, and I haven't even used it yet.
03:53 Some teenagers get cell phones, you get Grammy nominations.
03:56 2003 Grammy nominations.
03:59 At that point, it felt like Grammys were sort of the biggest thing.
04:02 I got five nominations, didn't win any.
04:05 Went on to get eight nominations in my life.
04:08 Still haven't won any.
04:09 50 million albums later.
04:11 Lame.
04:13 [MUSIC - KING, "EVERYTHING"]
04:14 You were everything, everything that I wanted.
04:18 My happy ending music video.
04:20 This is one of my favorite songs.
04:22 This is a special song because after I recorded it,
04:25 like the first time I heard it, I just intuitively
04:30 felt like this would be a big song for me.
04:32 And it did reach number one.
04:33 And I always kind of get those feelings with those songs.
04:38 And I play this song every tour.
04:40 It's one of my favorite ones to play.
04:42 There's always like that kissing scene.
04:44 So I would take that out and get as close as possible without it.
04:48 I love clothes.
04:49 I'm a chick, of course.
04:50 I love shopping.
04:51 I love all that stuff.
04:53 It's cool.
04:54 Us weekly.
04:55 Hot Hollywood carpet.
04:57 Oh, I look lit.
05:00 No, I think I was.
05:01 [GASPS]
05:02 [LAUGHS]
05:04 When I first came out, and without realizing it,
05:08 I was setting a trend with the tank top and the tie.
05:11 And I had my own look.
05:12 I was sober there.
05:14 When I look back now, it's just like it was really cool.
05:18 I would show up to a photo shoot with a book bag,
05:23 with all my spiked bracelets and ties and a couple of shirts.
05:28 And they definitely wanted me to wear the clothes that they had there.
05:33 And so I would just take my book bag, dump it on the floor,
05:35 and just be like, but see, I came with this stuff.
05:38 And then, but that's not how it works.
05:40 You have to wear these clothes.
05:41 But there was always a happy medium.
05:44 Dad was just snow.
05:46 But it could have been a predator.
05:48 Over the Hedge.
05:49 So I'm a possum.
05:51 And that is William Shatner.
05:53 And he's my dad.
05:55 Grew up doing theater as well.
05:57 And so when I did voiceover work, it felt very natural for me.
06:02 It's definitely something I would do more of.
06:05 And I'm currently taking my song "Scare Boy"
06:08 and turning that into a film.
06:10 I'm just in the process of developing it right now.
06:13 And that's going to be super fun for me.
06:16 "Girlfriend" music video.
06:23 This music video was really fun to shoot.
06:28 Because this is where I got to do a lot of acting in the video.
06:31 I wore heels in this music video with socks.
06:34 Not totally sure how I feel about that.
06:40 And then I had the pink hair for the first time
06:43 in this music video.
06:44 And that caught on.
06:47 And then everyone was coming to the show wearing pink hair.
06:51 The "Girlfriend" video was super cold.
06:53 You know when you're really cold and your face feels tight?
07:00 I was like, my face looks weird because it's cold.
07:04 In the performance setup, I'm like,
07:06 I swear my lips look purple.
07:08 And I still have those wigs.
07:10 I think if I could tell myself when I first
07:14 started out something, I would just say, be you.
07:16 Don't listen to anybody else.
07:18 Avril Lavigne album press day.
07:20 You got to know who you are, be clear on that,
07:22 and fight for it.
07:23 And don't worry about what other people think.
07:25 This is really connected with my songs and music.
07:28 It's stuff I go through.
07:31 It's real life stuff.
07:33 And that speaks to people.
07:34 It moves people.
07:35 It touches people.
07:36 And it's something I see up on stage every night.
07:40 Know who you are.
07:41 And feel good and confident in yourself, in your art,
07:46 or even if it's not music related.
07:48 And just, you want to be happy.
07:50 [MUSIC - AVRIL LAVIGNE, "BITE ME"]
07:51 "Bite Me" music video.
07:58 This was right after the pandemic.
08:00 I signed to DTA Records.
08:03 I was with Travis Barker on his label.
08:07 We did some songwriting.
08:09 He produced.
08:10 We did a lot of performances together.
08:12 I didn't have a stylist for this music video.
08:15 I was just like over it at that point.
08:16 I was like, I'll just dress myself.
08:20 Yeah, we've been friends for a while.
08:22 And we still write songs together.
08:24 And I love working with him.
08:28 Who else is someone you'd love to partner up with?
08:31 I don't know.
08:31 I think it'd be cool to do a country collab.
08:34 I think it'd be really cool to work with Miranda Lambert.
08:38 I love her.
08:39 She's a badass.
08:40 She rocks.
08:40 [MUSIC - AVRIL LAVIGNE, "COMPLICATED"]
08:42 Performing "Complicated" with Olivia Rodrigo.
08:48 Yeah, Olivia started performing "Complicated" on her tour.
08:53 And everybody was talking about it.
08:55 And then we just happened to be in the same city
08:59 at the same time.
09:00 And so she reached out to me to jump up on stage with her
09:06 and perform the song.
09:07 So yeah, it was spontaneous.
09:12 And she was really sweet.
09:14 And yeah, that was really fun.
09:17 I think that's the cool thing about now
09:19 is there is the newer generation that's
09:24 catching on to my songs and my OG songs
09:29 and just learning about me and discovering me, I guess.
09:34 And I see that in my concerts, along with there's
09:42 people that have been coming to the shows for years.
09:44 So it's a cool time for me right now,
09:48 because like I said, 22 years into my career,
09:51 there's new and older fans.
09:53 And it's pretty unique, I think, and neat.
09:57 And now fans old and new can sing all of Avril's greatest
10:00 hits on her summer tour kicking off in May.
10:02 Tickets are on sale now.
10:04 It's my way of connecting with the fan base.
10:08 And it's cool to play songs off every album.
10:14 You have so many hits.
10:15 How do you even begin to decide what
10:17 goes into what you perform?
10:19 Well, I just go through the order of each album
10:22 and what all the singles were.
10:23 And then what ones I like to play live.
10:26 And then a few people were like, so what songs are you going
10:30 to play on the greatest hits?
10:32 I'll be playing hits.
10:35 That's just all the singles, a whole set list of singles,
10:38 which to be honest, that's a place that I strived to be at.
10:42 From day one, I wanted to be able to have
10:44 my whole show be all singles.
10:46 And now I have that.
10:47 And I'm very proud of that.
10:50 (chimes)
