Jim Watt turned pro in 1968 and won the British lightweight title at his second attempt in 1972 when he stopped Tony Riley in the 12th round. Watt lost his title in his first defence, when he was outpointed by former WBA lightweight champion Ken Buchanan. He regained the British title in 1975, when he stopped John Cheshire in the seventh round. In 1977, Watt won the vacant European lightweight title after beating Andre Holyk in the first round. After three defences of his European crown, Watt won the vacant WBC lightweight title with a 12th round stoppage of Alfredo Pitalua in 1979. Watt made three defences of his world title, the best of which was a points win over 1976 Olympic champion Howard Davis.

Sean O'Grady turned pro in 1975 when he was still only 15, and had 29 bouts in his first year. His first loss came in his 30th bout, soon after his 17th birthday, when O'Grady retired after four rounds against future WBC featherweight champion Danny Lopez. By the time O'Grady challenged Watt, he was 73-1 with 65 KOs. His best wins were a third round knockout of former WBA bantamweight champion Romeo Anaya and a majority decision over former amateur star David Vasquez. Most of O'Grady's fights took place in Oklahoma, where he grew up.
